  1. I have been having difficulty with editing envelopes for a long time, and I'm finally getting around to asking about it. I know that Ctrl-clicking supposedly makes it behave differently, but it doesn't seem consistent. And when no nodes are selected at all, dragging makes it select all the nodes under a clip or some such, when all I want is to move one segment. Anyway, I know if I learned how it would be quick and easy. Where can I get a rundown of how that all works?

  2. Can you let me know where you are hearing that piano effect? I'm a pianist myself so am very sensitive to minute piano details like that. However, as I type I realize that I hadn't finished this movement - far from it - so I haven't been paying the closest attention to those details yet.

Regarding the trumpet, turns out it was the wrong choice in the first place, and it's now a clarinet and much more appropriate for the musical moment. Now I'm on to part 2 of this track, different theme entirely, with solo strings and winds thrown in. Much consternation thereby.

  3. Well the reason I stopped responding to this question is the problem went away. Then it came back. Then it went away again. Then it went away again. So I'm just going to initiate a new instance of this instrument.

Which, to answer, is EastWest Piano Steinway, and yeah, instrument track.

  4. Well the reason I stopped responding to this question is the problem went away. Then it came back. Then it went away again. Then it went away again. So I'm just going to initiate a new instance of this instrument.

  5. I have a Midi track which sounded too loud, and like perhaps the notes were doubled, though that's sometimes hard to tell. I went to reduce the audio volume on the track, but even taking the slider all the way down I could still hear the track at close to the same volume as if it were up to the max. I assumed somehow the track had been duplicated or maybe bounced to audio or something. So I went to hunt that down, and started by muting this track, and the track muted completely. So, muting it works, but volume slider to -INF does not. Because mute works, it doesn't seem like it's related to any other track. I turned off effects for the track, made sure it was routing directly to Master, checked the adjacent track which is a different piano and it worked as expected. Also made sure notes were not doubled or something, they were not. What could be going on here?

  6. There's really nothing to screen shot because everything looks normal.

Anyway, I don't know what caused it, but the solution was to make sure "Select controllers along with notes" is enabled, delete the entire bar in which the zero length notes start happening, and re-enter that measure. If I delete the notes WITHOUT "Select controllers..." also enabled, the problem remained. Even though there were no visible pedal markings in that bar! Moving on...

  7. Definitely seems to be in the midi data itself, as when I move the clip to another track, the same thing happens. And it's not clip-based, because the problem starts in the middle of a clip. However, any new notes I add also have this problem.

  8. All of a sudden on one track, some of my notes, from a specific point onward, are extremely staccato, as if they have the absolute minimum length. I've bounced to clip, manually adjusted the note lengths, looked at the Event List, copied the notes to another track, and restarted Cakewalk completely, nothing helps.

"We will do everything in our power to ensure you don't ever get into a creative flow."

  9. "widely known" Hmm... I might take issue with that

"makes sense" Absolutely does, but it's a little like when I was recently told "Just check the setting on the low limit pot" when what I really needed to hear was "turn that little dial on the side".

In my day job I worked in tech for 30 years, and only now, having moved to a different industry, did I realize what a different world tech people live in than everybody else, and we didn't even realize it. I'm talking aerospace engineers and the like, who are truly brilliant yet can barely open an Excel doc.

For example, had this Cakewalk error said something like:

"The above audio/MIDI device was disconnected from your system. It's a USB device, so either something got unplugged, or else the USB controller for it was turned off in Windows to save power when your computer went to sleep. You can disable this feature in Windows in the Device Manager, (where the controllers have various different names, such as "Generic USB Hub"). Doing this will leave your Cakewalk outputs on even when the computer has gone to sleep. But if you did in fact unplug something, would you like Cakewalk to reroute these outputs to an available device?" Click "No" to keep current settings."

... that would have been better.

  10. Because my projects tend to take forever to load, I leave them open when I'm done working. Every time I come back to my computer after having been away all day I get a dialog that says "The above audio/MIDI device was disconnected from your system. Would you like Cakewalk to reroute these outputs to an available device?" Click "No" to keep current settings."

I always click No and there's never been a problem, but it's annoying that I have to do this every time I sit down, plus there's a low level worry that there really is something wrong. what is this about?

  11. Ah, is that what you meant? I was unable to translate "check the setting on that low limit pot" to "turn that little dial on the side", lol

  12. What no one posted:
"Hey Jim, you're a great guy and a talented composer. By the way, you may not know that a lot of expression pedals come with little dials on them so you can ADJUST the range of values the pedal will send. Make sure you haven't inadvertently turned that dial. Because, who knows, maybe you just need to turn it all the way and suddenly the full 0-127 range of the pedal is open to you!"

    My response:
"Wow! You got it exactly right, it was as simple as that! Problem solved.  (And thanks for confirming what I've already suspected regarding my prodigious skills.)"

  13. I used to be able to click on a section in the Arranger track and have all the events in all tracks under it also selected. In fact, I used to do that by accident all the time. Now that I WANT to do it though, it won't do it. Did something change? I want to copy my whole intro section way off to the right past the end of the project and play around with it and if all goes well replace my current section with this new one. Er? I feel like I'm going crazy. Didn't I used to be able to do that?

  14. I just read an article which gave me an idea I wanted to run by here to see if anyone  has done it -- or maybe everyone already does it. This is an orchestral piece which will feature a lot of solo instruments at various times. The idea is to have two tracks for each instrument. A wetter one for when it is part of the greater ensemble, and a drier one for when it is featured in a solo moment. By linking these two tracks, I can just use volume sliders to adjust the balance between these two tracks to bring forward instruments and then pull them back again without affecting the overall volume quite so much. Does this sound like a good idea? Would simply adjusting the amount of reverb on a single track accomplish the same thing more simply, or would I find a benefit in adjusting more than just reverb on these two tracks and so having the linked tracks thing would be more useful?

  15. TTS has crashed Cakewalk for me every single time. I so wish I could use it. Have never had time to figure it out.

Let me post this then and ask if these instruments also sound crummy to get an idea of the bar you are hoping I reach. The violin is the only live instrument in this track. Well, and the rain.

Anyway, thanks everyone, really, but I'm going to stop asking here. I do appreciate everyone's opinion, but this isn't going to be a trumpet-centric piece and I don't have the time to chase down versions of every instrument I'm going to be highlighting. I definitely posted too soon here before every other instrument comes in. I guess the trumpet bits are just gonna sound bad to trumpet afficionados, as I'm sure the oboe solos will to oboists, the harp to... you get the idea. Sigh... pressing on! Thanks again.

    Edited for realism:
what Glenn heard: "find out what electronic cleaner spray is (20 min) go to store to get electronic cleaner spray (1 hour) come home empty handed and buy electronic cleaner spray on Amazon (10 min) await delivery (1000 min) grab some tools and clear table space (15 min) figure out how to open pedal and poke around acquainting oneself with the innards (25 min) try and determine what built up gunk might actually look like and whether or not any is even in there (20 min) use some electronic cleaner spray to remove the built up gunk" (10 min) and "if it's still failing - check the resistance settings (open the back up)" (5 min) and "if it's still failing, buy a new pedal" (24-48 hours)🙂
