Very enjoyable listen. The inspiration you received and then put into this song is clear. I could spend weeks mixing it so many different ways. The combinations and textures that this piece is capable of being are huge. I'd maybe remove or adjust some of the low ends at certain parts for clarity. Great work 🎶🎶🎶🎶

Thanks Larry for listening, your generous comments and your constructive feedback on the low freq response. I agree pulling down the low end at some places opens up the space for competing or close-by frequencies. It's simply a tight trade-off at times which gets overlooked 😁 🙏

So you might have seen my recent post about an old music folder I found in my attic, dating back to circa 1980. Well, this is the first track to emerge from what has become known as The Lost Attic Tapes project.

This particular song has an interesting back story, I actually wrote it on guitar as an entry for a local (and I mean local) song competition – I’d have been about 17 or 18 I guess at the time (so you’ll forgive the lyrical naivety I hope).

We had to submit a recorded take (on TDK's finest quality cassette tape) as well as lyrics and music, so I had a piano arrangement written by a local semi-pro musician who was a mate of a mate. The bass player from my band played bass and my mate did drums and BGVs. My then guitar teacher played the piano and also composed the guitar solo (after two listens he recorded that in a single take). I then had to learn it and perform it on the day, as well as doing the lead vocal. In the end, we came second to a girl with an acoustic guitar and a song called ‘Suicide Letters’ (I told you it was a low bar). So we all retired to the pub afterwards to drink our £15 prize money – life changing stuff eh.

We used to perform this song in my band, Jetlag, (guitar, bass and drums) and once, the drummer got so bored, he put his sticks down and went to the bar (don’t you just love drummers), I don’t think anyone noticed.

As to the track itself, I started by re-creating the piano arrangement in Notion from the original dots (that’s the track with the higher register notes). I then made a chord track from that arrangement (programmed in PRV and played using a Soft Rhodes), which I then used in EzKeys - using one of the contemporary soul MIDI pack arrangements as a session pianist – this added a lower register to the piano to fill out the sound. The VSTs I used are Pianoteq 7 Stage and Synthogy Ivory II.

I used EzBass to create the bass track and EzDrummer for a drum track. The ‘acoustic’ guitar is actually my T5z, patched through a CLA guitars plugin and the guitar solo - which is the same guitar - is patched through one of the TH-U All packs with a touch of added delay.

I’m not sure this was ever in my vocal range over 40 years ago and it’s even less so now, but I really didn’t want to change the key. I did my best with the vocals and BGVs (give me some credit for attempting a four part harmony on the outro). The lyrics are very simple, but they have an innocent naivety I rather like – the World seemed a far simpler place back then.

Any improvements in my mixing are entirely down to the efforts of Mike @Creative Sauce (do check out his channel on YouTube if you haven’t already). This is the most complicated project I have ever attempted - with more tracks, buses and sends than enough. My projects used to be ever so simple (crap, but simple 😉 ) until I started watching Mike's videos and I now have delusions of capability 😂 - any production howlers are entirely mine, despite Mike's best efforts to make me better at my craft.

Anyway - here it is – the first track off the Lost Attic Tapes:  Breaking Away, circa 1980. I hope you enjoy it, nits and crits welcome as always. I had a lot of fun re-creating this – a real nostalgia trip.

Good guitars and vocals Andy ! Nice flow to the song and the vocals stand at the middle clear of the instruments that are well panned and placed both in space and freq eq.

All in all, a good one there 👍

And now for something completely different, as the saying goes!

The fifth track off our Indelible Stain album and a COMPETITION!!

The track is Durdle Door – now a strange title I know, but Durdle Door is basically a travelogue of where I was taken for holidays when I was young – unless you know the County of Dorset in the UK, the place names might not mean much, but if you follow the track, the names should jump out!

And the whole album is available on Spotify

We’ve update our website as well – we’ve got our own store now where you can get music and merchandise!!

    Hope you enjoy the video

In late December 2022 I had to do something I really hated doing but it had to be done.

My best friend of 38 years who I loved deeply and whom I had known for 45 years needed a level of help and care that I could no longer provide.

It may feel/sound a little like a dirge but it is short less than three minutes.  I do appreciate you listening if you do.

    IS THIS IT?

Been in a bit of a creative funk for a bit.
I threw the backing track together with the aid of ToonTrack's Modern Pop bass, keys, and drum midi. There are some titling inconsistencies, but its not hard to figure out.
I guess I'd classify it as a "cue", or "bumper" maybe? (something I know nothing about)

It did have the intended result; I'm starting to "bond" with EZbass, getting a little more fluent with EZkeyes, learning to edit inside of SD3,
and it pushed me to write a quick solo (that wasn't a 12 bar blues) and tighten up my chops.
Is it "perfect"? Nope! At some point I'll go back and get the guitar part "right" and "massage" the midi a bit more.
For now I'm on to the next "cue".

We need a bit more interaction between the Songs Forum and the Deals Forum.
A lot of "bought it, installed it"; but very little "this is what I did with it".

    So here's the tech info:
    EZkeyes Modern Pop
    EZbass  Modern Pop
    SD3    Modern Pop Grooves
SofTube Marshall Silver Jubilee: '67 Classic (not sure I "love" this)
SofTube Celestion Speaker Shaper: 2 4 x 10 cabs with Celestion Blue and G12 Heritage, both with Alnico magnets. I think I've "bonded" with this one.
IKM's FAME Studio emulation; 3 instances of Studio A; Guitar (1), Keys (2) Drums and Bass (3).
Warren Huart has a pretty good tutorial on FAME here.
IKM's Lurssen Console (Pop Rock-more glue) on the Master Buss followed by fabfilter Pro-L2 set at +1.4, ceiling at 0.5dB
Scores 11.7 on LUFS scale in iZotope Insight

The title? one of the midi variations I used was titled This Is It.

As always, would love your crits and comments; don't be afraid to "lean" on me a little; I have broad shoulders...

Energetic rocky feel to this Tom with pacy beats to go along... quick and crisp piece...

Hello , I was going to wait awhile ..  but I got toasted and posted..  Here's a new one I could use your ears on . Thought I'd go back to some vocal songs while I still can . I've been goin back and forth on vocal levels and have had problems with de-essing. Any suggestions would be Great for improvements , no matter how small. Besides the electric guitar DI'd, everything else was captured with an SM57 including the vocals ..  (last time for this) thus the De-ess problems. Left side - Dulcimer and Yari acoustic . Right side G&L Tele and high strung Aria acoustic. Ibanez bass and SI drums.  Sends to Valhalla Space modulator on the acoustics.  Thank You  for the listen.        This is a fictional song but it's been a  close call ..         - This is Mix D with vocal panning-   Thanks ..  mark

Neat sublime guitars there Mark with engaging vocals and a nice flow to the song... beats just right to define the pace and rhythm...

This video illustrates how the Event List view can be used in Cakewalk by Bandlab to make patch changes (program changes) to kits of NI Polyplex and then automation of Master randomization in Polyplex can be done for more variations within each kit.

This is just a simple fun with Polyplex tutorial in Cakewalk by Bandlab that can be applied to any other instruments as well where patch changes can be introduced as MIDI events on MIDI tracks and automation can be applied to any automatable parameter/s.

Very good video.  My only negative comment is your introduction audio is much louder than the rest of your video.

Since it is not listed in your signature do you mind sharing what video capture and editing software you use?

I've subscribed to your channel.  I'm looking forward to seeing more Cakewalk videos in the future.

Thanks Jim for watching, subscribing to my channel and for your feedback.

I shall be reducing the volume level of my intro video to balance it in all videos from now on.

I use OBS and Cyberlink PowerDirector.

Yes, sure I intend to make more videos in future on Cakewalk and other DAWs/instruments too.

Yes, the piano sounds on the RF8 are fantastic indeed. And oh yes, the RF8 is a mighty beast in size, weight and features too 😁

This video illustrates how automation of parameters of an instrument plugin (NI Massive used here) can be done using a MIDI controller in Cakewalk by Bandlab.

In particular, it shows how more than one parameter can be assigned to a single knob of a MIDI controller to automate them simultaneously in real time during playback of an instrument track.

  17. Hi folks,

I am planning a simple & basic online live presentation event on Introduction to Music & Audio Technology for absolute beginners in the world of music technology. It would be at a very basic and simple level to help understand the very basic stuff in a very simple and easy to understand manner.

Of course, I wouldn't personally mind anyone attending but it's important for experienced folks and veterans to know that it would be basic intro stuff to help absolute beginners get aware and up & running with the very simple and basic stuff.

The presentation event is likely to be about an hour to 75 minutes long. The date and time is not decided yet.

I am a freelance music producer with over 15 years exposure to music and audio technology, so would love to share whatever little I have learnt with those who would like to learn & interact.

If & once I am able to fix a schedule for the presentation event depending on interest expressed, I plan to create a live web link for that and share it to the email addresses of those interested.

The number of attendee registrations for the presentation event shall be limited to 50 maximum.

I would like to assess the interest level for such a presentation, so could I request those who would be interested to express interest by doing two things please

    1. Clicking "like" for this post.

    2. Replying to this post with a "+1"

Any queries in this regard are welcome.

There is a link to my bandcamp page in my signature below which you can visit to check out some of the original music tracks that I have produced. Thanks.

Nice catchy guitar strumming Anthony and good vocals... kudos to security guards indeed... they do deserve praise for their sheer dedication and commitment 👍

Good natural spontaneous work on strumming and singing the song 👍

Goodness me ! Why would one ever want to bid farewell to any DAW, unless of course there is shortage of storage space in the computer and a conscious choice has to be made to uninstall an existing one. By the way, we can definitely use more than one DAW 😊

I house six DAWs in my computer, five of them pro-versions and one of them lite-version. Of course, two of the five pro versions are Sonar Platinum and Cakewalk by Bandlab which are of the same genesis.

I will admit though that notwithstanding my madness for exploration, my first love was and will always be Cakewalk Sonar from X1 days (which has now developed into the continuously improving Cakewalk by Bandlab). I find no reason to discard any of them, unless if I may ever have to, due to lack of storage space.

    Hey... let's keep exploring... and most importantly... let's keep making beautiful music 😊 🎹 🎸 🎻 🎷 🎺 🎤 🎙️ 🎧 🎵 🎶

P.S. :  By the way, somehow the Spotify link doesn't play for me too.
