  1. By now, rest assured those of us using Windows 7 have heard all the arguments posted above by various people. We are completely aware that Windows 7 is EOL. I began preparing for it a few years ago, when it became obvious to me that Microsoft was only interested in monetizing me. I started using Linux for my online "work" (checking the handful of forums I visit each day, and deleting the spam email I get, from people trying to monetize me. There's a reason Microsoft wants you online 100% of the time). Please, keep the sermons to yourselves. We Luddites may not be as stupid as you think. There's a very good chance I will be able to use at least Sonar for the rest of my life. One, I'm just a hobbyist. No pressure to perform or produce. Two, I'm almost 70, and it's likely my rig will continue to work as long as I'm around, and still wanting to do music. Three, I have all the software I am ever likely to need. As for security, as I said, when online I'm on Linux. I keep my music machine offline by default. And I run paid AV on it just in case. And I practice safe habits, which is 90% of security. I don't care what operating system, music software or computer hardware anyone uses. and it continues to baffle me that so many people do seem to care, and rather passionately, that a few people have decided they don't like the direction things are going in. We're not subversives, trying to prevent the relentless march of progress. but we do have the right to voice our opinions, participate in the discussion, etc. Unfortunately, a few here seem to lose it when we do. Quite innocuous remarks elicit multi-paragraph responses with colorful prose, and even name-calling. Kind of resembles religious fanaticism. As if our souls were in mortal danger. Again, WHO CARES? Do what you want. I respect your right to make intelligent decisions about how to make your music. please respect mine. Resist that need to warn me that I am about to fall off a cliff. I assure you I am not.
  2. Luddite to Steev: I have another backup option if they take my Cakewalk away from me because I choose not to use Windows 10: sonar 8.5. On windows 7. forever. Days Of Future Passed all over again. Also: Why do you care so much what operating system I use? Nothing better to do than try to re-educate me? Who cares? Get a life.
  3. Me too. And you have asked the 64,000-bit question (can't say 64,000 dollars, since it's free). I'm not counting on it. No mal intent on the part of the developers here; they just need to cater to the majority, who have moved on. I'm wishin' and hopin' and prayin', but I'm also realistic. If the day comes when it will no longer work on Windows 7, I'll move on. But not to Windows 10.
  4. I agree, Cakewalk's interface lets you customize it any way you want. I pretty much use it exactly as I used Sonar 8.5. I have Track as the main view, maximized. I open Staff and Event view as need with keyboard shortcuts. They are positioned in the clips pane. I go in and out them constantly. I have Mixer nested at the bottom and open it as needed. I also have it nicely framed in the clips pane. I open tempo and meter views as needed. Same with the inspector and browser views, but keep them closed by default. So, my screen looks just like sonar, before the skylight came in. Except it looks much nicer, of course. I color code all the instruments, which may be 70 or so, to improve navigation. I think the bakers have more pressing concerns than a redesign of a GUI that works however you want it to. Like old Sonar, or platinum, or your own personal template.
  5. Yep, that did it. Thanks man! you are amazing.
  6. I have made a custom view for my projects. but I keep hitting the number 3 key, which switches me back to a different view. I do it a lot, since I'm a lousy typist. The problem is, I programmed the E key for Event List, which I use a lot. so, half the time when I try to hit E, I hit 3, and my view gets rearranged. I can't find a way to turn this behavior off in Key Bindings. I checked documentation, and even downloaded "Sharp Keys," a nifty registry program that lets you remap keys. I successfully used it to turn off the caps-lock, another of my clumsy fingers' favorite targets. I was all set to turn off the offending key, until I realized I need that key for other things. It's beginning to drive me nuts. does anyone know of a solution for this torture?
  7. I may have solved this, or at least found one big reason why it's been happening: My large orchestral projects have many instruments, and in the clips pane there are all these white thingies all over the place. I'm not sure what they are, but they go away when I do "bounce to clips." And then the project saves normally. Old thread I know, but I just wanted to tie it up, in case anyone else might have this problem.
  8. I'm intrigued about mixing with headphones, but I worry about what that might do to my ears (which are aging rapidly at this point, like the rest of me). The only decent pair I have are Sennheiser HD 212Pro. I think they have enhanced bass though, so their usefulness for mixing may be limited. Shane mentioned Rin Tin Tin, by which I take it he means Tinnutus. I have that big time, all the time. I have to take anti-inflammatories for arthritis, and also use Tylenol daily, both of which cause that. As does listening with headphones. so I never use them anymore.
  9. you need to set the channel in Kontakt. At least that's what I need to do. In the upper left area as I recall (I'm on my Linux computer so I'm just visualizing it).
  10. I just made a keyboard shortcut (E of cousre). I just hit E and up comes Event List. did one for staff view also (S). Plus, Velocity, Length and Transposition. Shortcuts are great for the workflow.
  11. If I'm starting a brand new project, I start from scratch. most of the time I'm revising older projects, which are already set up in sonar. i just open them in Cakewalk. I've even opened pre-Sonar projects, as well as importing from other DAWS. So it's rare lately that I'm starting from scratch.
  12. If Staff View were actually usable as a notation program, it would make sense to have the draw tool be the default action. But the devs themselves have stated it is more of an editing feature. Staff view is terrible as notation, but great as a midi editing tool. Don't take my word for it; Jerry Gerber has also said so. It makes more sense to let the user decide what shall be the default action. Then people who use it primarily to enter notes can make the draw tool the default. And people who do the bulk of their midi editing in staff view can make the select tool the default. Then it would really be a Smart Tool. If it's an easy fix, they should do it. If not, I understand, they have more pressing concerns. that's all I'm saying. Hopefully the devs care about the people who use their software in ways that others would consider weird, or out of the mainstream. After all, they created Staff View, and gave it its various capabilities. that's what makes Cakewalk so great. It has many ways of doing things. And there are people who use it in ways the majority might consider foreign and therefore not deserving of attention. We all count!
  13. Do you mean save the custom view or workspace? That won't do it. If you mean an overall template, I don't work with templates, I like to be able to set up each project independently.
  14. Right, we want to be able to set it to the default that we want. The Smart tool is one-dimensional, it assumed everyone has the same workflow. Like, "they're in staff view, they want to put notes in." but in staff view you can do much more than that. I do most of my work with the Select tool. After selecting the notes I need to change, I can adjust velocity, transposition and length very quickly. Or copy cut and paste. I do put in notes occasionally. Most of them were put in when I first made the project, using step-record, however, so I only use the draw tool for spot work here and there. for my workflow, the Select tool is definitely the one I want to be default. A smart toll that actually was smart would let me decide the default.
  15. Yes. you're missing that it should allow you to set the default once and for all. So you can get right into your workflow without messing it up right off the bat.
  16. I tried that a long time ago, no it doesn't do anything.
  17. Hear Hear! The "select" tool is my preferred default in staff view, but the "smart" tool is too stupid to know that. so half the time I start working, I put in weird notes, usually two octaves below the staff, which of course I have to erase. Which is giving me ulcers...not how I like to start working...
  18. Thank you for your service, John. Especially in that war.
  19. Wonderful. It would be great if our fearless leaders took your advice and we were prepared for this eventuality. Unfortunately, as we know, politicians are reactive, not proactive. They're only worried about the next election. I plan to live on acorns when this happens. The squirrels and chipmunks who now beg for a handout will grow to despise me.
  20. Hard to tell, really. Yeah, could be a plant from one of the paid DAWS; they have to be feeling something of a hit these days. Or just someone who has only used "user-friendly" programs, and expected to make award-winning videos in a day or two. Then they realized , uh yeah, bit of a learning curve here. If that's the case, they will find the same thing with every other DAW they try, of course. If they're serious, they'll put in the time. My guess is, naw, they won't be back.
  21. You are correct, people are getting stupider. They think they're getting smarter, because they know how to use search engines, and then act like they actually know something. What they don't teach anymore in school is how to actually think. when the next Mass Coronal Ejection hits, like in the 1800s, and the grid is fried, we'll find out who the smart people are.
  22. It does need to be reactivated periodically. I think it's every 6 months, but if I'm wrong somebody will correct me no doubt...
  23. You can do that in Event List by using the "Select By Filter" feature in the Edit Menu. You highlight or select the events you need to change, for example, CC10, panning, access the Filter in the Edit Menu, and then the best thing to do is choose "none" at the bottom right. This will clear all the checkmarks and you can then start clean. Go to the controller line, enter "10" in both fields, hit OK and it will select all CC10 events. I did it last night for an entire orchestral piece where I wanted to change all the pans (I used to do panning with CC events; I do it differently now). Took about 30 seconds. you can do ti with notes also. Say you want to change the velocity on all A6 notes, because a certain sampled note is too loud. works the same way. A little-known but powerful Cakewalk feature that has been around forever.
  24. Maestro, I can in a way, create a grace note in staff view. It won't look like one or display properly, but it will play correctly. What I do is put in a note as close to the value I want as I can get, them move it ahead as far as I need to, and then adjust its length. I can make the adjustments in staff view by right-clicking the note and then changing the start time and duration. Or I can switch to Event List and do it there. I have shortcuts for both views (S and E) so it's quick and easy to go back and forth between them. I also made shortcuts for Length, Velocity and Transposition, so I can do all those things in staff view as well. Sure, these are workarounds necessitated by staff views' shortcomings, but such is true of all DAWS. The bottom line is that I have adapted well to Cakewalk. Other folks have different needs, styles, etc and naturally find Cakewalk's staff view not very good. It all comes down to the user. Staff View is not intrinsically good or bad. It is what it is. some people use it and like it, others do not. I'm not sure what the argument is here. I like staff view, it works for me. You don't like staff view, it doesn't work for you. All good as far as I can see.
  25. Just FYI, but another way to enter notes in staff view is to use step record. This presumes you have a keyboard, of course. you can also use regular record, if you are good enough with a keyboard (I'm not so I use step-record most of the time). If you are just doing spot work, entering by hand is easiest. but if doing long sequences, step-record does come in handy. you can adjust velocity and timing of course afterward. I don't recall having your problem when I use staff view. I don't even bother to set snap in staff view. I'll have to look into this next time I'm using Cakewalk.
