  1. I would try rolling back your Aria Player and Engine to an earlier model. The Engine in particular can cause problems if updated to the newest version. One example of the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" rule. I think Make Music even warns about updating the engine though I don't remember the specifics.

  2. Install 8.5, then the new Cakewalk. 8.5 was the most recent Sonar version I had also, and by keeping it got some great plugins that work in Sonar, like Sonitus Suite, LP 64 EQ and Compressor, etc. You may not be able to port your Cake projects back to 8.5m, but there would be no reason to as CbB is far superior. I even have set mine up to look like 8.5, so I have my exact workflow, but better. More powerful, more stable, and better looking too.

  3. They did make the world better. Or, at least were a reflection of a more hopeful time. I know I know, bad stuff was going on then (I was there), but there was just a healthy innocence to most music back then. It was inspiring, it made you feel good. Hopefully, Peter and David are making  music again together somewhere.

It is of course wise to take reasonable and prudent precautions,  but going on the internet is not really all that dangerous if you stay away from websites you probably shouldn't be visiting anyway.  You know what I  mean.

It is indeed dangerous for those who are the unfortunate victims of a hack or malware attack. you can do everything right and this can still happen. But life itself is dangerous. Nature is dangerous. The Universe is dangerous - just ask the dinosaurs (or their descendants, those lovely little flying things. some of which will peck your eyes out if given a chance). I recently installed a BSD system on an old hard drive on death's door. (BSD is a unix-based system, like linux. It's supposed to be even safer). I left my computer for a few minutes, and when I cam back, someone had gotten into computer, and opened a terminal (similar to the windows command line), and was happily typing away. They were well on the way to completely gaining control when I shut it down and got rid of the now compromised system. There are no guarantees.

  5. I stay offline by default, connecting occasionally to update Microsoft Security Essentials or check the forum or research something musical. I am running one of the early versions of CbB (the acronym everyone uses now), as I don't update for the sake of updating. I did not even know about the issue re: having an internet connection now and then.  But I have never had it revert to demo mode. So just causally connecting now and then seems to be enough. I would just download CbB, authorize it, and connect every now and then. Once a week might be enough. It does work really well, and you can use all your plugins from earlier CW versions (so keep them installed).

  6. Using Pantheon has helped me solve the problem of blending different orchestra libraries, some of which are wet, some dry. I use the Hall verb, adjust the mix anywhere from 5 to 30% depending on how wet/dry the library is, and they all have about the same verb on them before I send them to Spaces, a convo reverb (so all is in same space). Works great.

  7. Reaper now has an official Linux version. That is, not just using Wine, but a true Linux version. One of the big sticking points is the lack of ability to use sound libraries, like East West, Vienna etc. But with their developers, who knows, it may just be a matter of time. If it became really doable, it would be very tempting for me. I already know how to use Reaper and am comfortable with Linux. But my guess is it's years away, if at all. But for those who just want to use synths, it's possible to work now in Reaper Linux. You have to give them credit for trying.

Thanks for the expressions of support guys. I don’t have the temperament to deal with internet crap anymore. In the last several years I’ve suffered the loss of several close family members, and personal health issues including severe depression.

At times the forum community was all that kept me sane and at other times the desire to be a part of everything and stay involved was so overwhelming that I had to withdraw for periods.

    Anyway that’s what was.

I feel your pain, man. I have  lost three siblings and four childhood friends in the past 5 years. Plus two cats well advanced in years, who I was closer to than any of the people.  But where there's life, there's hope.

It will be a sort of sad day when I have to retire my PCI cards.   Those M-Audio Deltas are quality hardware.   I don't know how old my first AP2496 is but they still run solid on W10. As much as one wants to bash MS at least they value legacy support and those W7 drivers still work.  None of the legacy M-Audio products will work on a current Mac.

Do you know how to get legacy drivers for Linux for 2496? I tried but could not. I use a Steinberg UR-22 on my music rig, but would like to put the 2496 back in my old computer for better sound while listening there. Never should have removed it. I probably have a working setup on an old image of Ubuntu or something, where I might find the download, but I have a dozen or so Linux images to check through.

  10. I used Reaper for a year before coming back to Sonar 8.5, and then to CbB. It basically took me a year to complete a 16 minute classical full orchestra work in Reaper. I spent a solid two weeks working constantly with another user to figure out the midi routing. Reaper is for geeks, basically. People who can code, work in UNIX, etc. The rest of us need a program that is more intuitive.
