  1. This is one of the most jaw-droppingly good VIs I own.

If you pipe or play in some midi and listen back in 'regular' mode, it's pretty meh. It's just a sampled trumpet. But flick that smart delay switch and/or start playing with the articulations via the keyswitches/articulation maps, and it's damn near miraculous. The same goes for the trombone, tenor, and clarinet (I haven't had a chance to play with the alto yet even though it's been Bapu'd for months).

SAS' brushes and upright bass are good value too.

  2. Thanks PC, very helpful!

I really like Skybox Audio as a developer too - I have the acoustic piano libraries which are outstandingly good, even taken as 'straight' pianos. I think I'm in the same boat you describe re your preferences; my ideal would be for the electric pack to combine the Rhodes with the 145b! I'm more of a Rhodes guy than a Wurli one, but I love the 'juiciness' of a nice Wurli!

  3. How much difference is there between the 145B and the 200A, @PavlovsCat? I'm semi-tempted by the offer on the 145B, but I only just bought SonicCouture's Broken Wurli. Which is very nice, although I think the Canterbury Suitcase (their Rhodes) is on a whole different level.

I think you can buy a real one or close to it for that price.

Well sure...but can you *play* it? I imagine a half-decent tremolo will take a fair few years to develop!

Musical Sampling libraries tend to be very good, although Indiginus wins in the playability stakes.

  5. It's hard to beat PA for the sheer scale of what they offer.

I believe there are deals where you can get a year of Spark for $99 which isn't bad. I think I actually like their B3 emulation more than IKM's, which was already stellar. And IMO the UAD reverbs are the best out there; all excellent and covering tons of ground (spring, capitol chambers, hitsville, Lexicon, plate etc).

Currently at 437. When it hits 500 it will turn to buy 1 plugin and get 4 free. But clearly, this group buy is moving at a snail's pace, especially considering that IK is one of the major players in this business (they're clearly a small business technically, but for this industry, they're a pretty big player). Like just about every company, they have their good and down sides to their software, but over all, I find they make very high quality software.

I'm kind of amazed that IK manage to get significant numbers of people to sign up for these promos because they run group buys so often. Not complaining at all, but many of us are prob in the position where there just isn't anything left to get from them. Or perhaps there is, but joining a group buy now to get the couple of things you're missing doesn't make sense when you can hold off and get more out of one a couple of years down the line.

I never bought anything from UAD. If I get this $25 thanks coupon can I combine it with the SAVE25 and UALURKER4LIFE to purchase Hitsville  reverb chamber (currently at $99) for $39?

BTW... can I use the UALURKER4LIFE more than one time?

There's this Polymax synth but it looks too much bread & butter and redundant for me having uHe, Xils, Softube, Arturia, Roland Cloud etc synthesizers (not counting a lot of analog and VA HW synths I have with similar architecture).

I have used UALURKER4LIFE multiple times and combined the thanks coupon with the SAVE25...although I think there's a limit on how often you can use the SAVE25.

I've tried multiple reverbs that claim to emulate a spring, only one actually sounded like one was Softube's.

I don't have the Softube one, but I sprung (ha!) for the UA AKG-BX20 a few years ago and it's fantastic. Great on vocals as well as guitars! I've picked up a few others over the years (e.g., one of the PSP spring verbs) but don't use them.

  9. Honestly, I'm happy with the non-pro Session Horns! Admittedly, I don't want/need them to do anything 'fancy'. I need punches/hits, swells, and falls, and I get the nice, bright sound I'm after from SH. I find it very convincing and easy to use.

I really like the Straight Ahead Samples horn libraries, but I've only tried the sole instruments which tend to be on the mellower side and jazz-focused. Their newish Atomic Big Band (or their very-new ABB lite) might give you what you're after. What they're achieving with the smart delay function is pretty incredible.

Not only the verbs. Stealth Limiter is a good one, too, and so is Black 76 ... And many others. What turns me off is the neverending drama, the product shopification, installation sizes. Paying for the downloads again not so much. Transfer policy a bit more.

Everyone has to decide for themselves.

Totally agreed; taking purely on the quality of their products - and on the value they provide if you know how to play the game to get the best prices - IK can stand up proud in any company. If you're after a really straightforward experience...well, that seems to be the dealbreaker for some people!
