  1. Any thoughts on Harrison?

I know it's still not fully clear whether our existing Cakewalk installs will work indefinitely, or what it might cost to keep using the new, supported version, and I'm looking ahead.

$80 for a perpetual DAW license is quite appealing - but at this price, Harrison, Reaper, and Presonus' Studio 1 artist are all in that $80-100 range. I like the look of Harrison's workflow, but recall that it was less stable for some users who run virtual instruments (which I do).

  2. I'm new to this developer, but got pointed to them because I couldn't find the basic sweeps and swirls I was after for some jazz ballad stuff (think Tony Bennett's The way you look tonight). Along the way I got StraightAheadSamples brushes, FluffyAudio brushes, VSL jazz drums, Soniccouture's Moonkits, and Toontrack Decades (which also required upgrading to SD3).

I really wish I'd found Borsta first! Seriously, this may be the best $30 you can spend on a library.

They even do very functional demos! Huzzah for Klevgrand!

Absolutely not. I got that crossgrade in a $45 glitch a year ago and there wasn't a single time I picked it over BFD. There's just no reason to unless you're specifically looking for a more unrealistic / drum sampler-ish sound. I have actually uninstalled it a couple of weeks ago to make room for more BFD extensions. ;)

Thank you for talking me down!

I listened to the audio demos earlier and struggled to imagine a time I'd want to use it instead of the EZDrummer/Superior Drummer sounds. I got Moonkits because I wanted brushes, but really missed the large midi library and user friendliness.

Sun Drums 49$ to moonkits owner is affordable.

This low price is first time?

I don't think I've seen that crossgrade so low before. I'm trying to decide whether to go in the other direction (moonkits to sun). I like the sound, but I've just bought SD3 and a pair of expansions...so do I need this?

I wonder if this pricing means that BFD4's release is imminent.

I don't think so. BFD3 has been offered for $49 pretty regularly for the last 2-3 years.

I also hope not, because if they make the GUI one I can get my head around in BFD4, I might regret upgrading to SD3!

Vernon, I took organ (piano and drum) lessons as a kid, but I have tendinitis and play terribly in my old age. But still, considering the deal on the IK Hammond B-3-X at JRR Shop and the "GROUP" discount brings it to only $33.59 USD, and your testimonial in this thread I think is breaking down my defenses.  That price is too good to pass up.

The IK is top notch, PC - don't pass it up. It's also worth keeping an eye on UAD's sales - I picked up their waterfall organ for $24, and it's fantastic. I can't say whether it's 'better' than the IK, but I find the presets a better starting point.

  7. Musical Sampling do really good stuff. I have several instruments from their Atelier series (trumpet, sax, and clarinet) and they're all excellent. Great sound, and very intuitive - just noodle away on a keyboard and the scripting does the rest. Especially at the intro prices, they're no brainers if they cover ground you don't have covered elsewhere.

So... Is this a better deal than those $14 plugins you were all buying a while ago? Should I dip my toes in the UAD ecosystem?

It's a better deal if it gives you what you want or need 🙂

If you're already overflowing with Pultecs and LA-2As, it might not be for you, but it's hard to argue with the price. Both those emulations are really good, the Century channel gets overlooked as a vocal strip (lots of nice tube colour + really simple operation), and the oxide/plate reverb are cut-down versions of excellent sounding plugins (Studer / EMT140).

I can't see you getting a better entry point into the UAD world, and as all these are native, why not give 'em a whirl? With a bit of luck, they'll start porting the other reverbs over to native soon and then you'll be really spoiled!
