I can't comment on the difference. I was planning on learning to use REW before I got ARC but needed a mic. I picked up ARC3 with the mic out of convenience and to get into one of the Group Buys.  But that said, ARC3 was very user friendly.

Would you have links to some tutorials or tips you could pass along for REW?

REW is a bit of a bear to get into. Once you get the hang of it though, it's really powerful.

This video will get you started:

  2. I love that he blames covid as the cause of his business (apparently) failing.

From what I've read on KVR, Reddit, and other forums, this guy will spam people incessantly and just when you think he's finally removed you he'll do it again. He allegedly gets booted from many of the mass email newsletter services because of recipient complaints, including from myself. He's been banned from multiple subreddits for spamming, including /r/vsti because after he was banned, he then posted more spam from an alt account so they've had to do a keyword ban. The moment anyone criticizes or questions him the flame wars begin, as we've witnessed on Reddit and KVR.

I've read that many people complain that they've bought in to his so-called "group buys" and he's never delivered on promised products that were under development.

I've never purchased anything from him and never will. I just can't support anyone who runs his business like this and I don't understand why anyone else would either. And donating to a monthly Patreon account? Not a chance!

update: just checked and it appears that Reddit has suspended his account. I wonder why!

  3. Obviously, everyone's mileage will vary.

I gave this a try. Unless I completely misunderstood what it's supposed to do, it immediately spiked my (Ryzen 7 3800x) CPU to near 100% and didn't seem to actually do anything aside from throwing an error that CPU usage was high. I tried switching between my various drivers (ASIO, Focusrite, etc.) with no change. I tried searching for YouTube videos that would explain what this does.

    I gave up and uninstalled.

Orb Composer was overpriced and abandoned by Hexachords (developer).  I have seen forum mentions that they are working on bringing it back.  The Orb Producer series are much more usable, and based on the Orb Composer code, I am sure.  They don't try to be orchestral tools like "Composer" was marketed to be.  The key caution I would give regarding Hexachords or "Orb Software", or whatever their moniker- If you purchase their product(s), do NOT ever expect any kind of updates or bug fixes.  Maybe you will get them, but maybe you won't.  After running a BF/Christmas "blowout" on Composer, they deleted their Discord "support" (marketing) channel and disappeared until they released the Producer series.

That's too bad. It's unfortunate behavior from an otherwise well-respected company.

I find it odd that Plugin Boutique is running regular sales and promotions on the Orb Composer product despite it being essentially abandoned by Hexachords.

It seems to be a bit of a mess. This KVR thread from early 2020 picked up more info as Composer was removed (and returned, without the ability to buy?) from the company's website:

    [...]

In summary (of my impression from what I've read): the reviews by users don't seem great, Composer and Producer seem to definitely be different and at least some of the threads wind up with people suggesting other tools for similar jobs. YMMV.

    I appreciate your reply.

I like Orb Producer. It's far from perfect and they've not released a single update since it was first released, which is disappointing. As you've noted, their website leaves much to be desired.

I really wish there was something between things like Orb Producer and its competitors and the AI where it tries to do literally everything for you. I want stable diffusion but for midi. "Write an ostinato for staccato strings in 4/4 time in F# minor." Someday maybe.

VST sales exploded during the pandemic.  Not sure what rock he is living under.

Yes, things are now on a massive downturn - but of all the business that were doing well during the actual pandemic period - plugin makers were one of them.

That's what I was wondering too. I had a ton of spare time on my hands and bought boatloads of audio libraries and VSTs during the lockdown. I have to think I wasn't unique.

What about others here? More or fewer purchases during and after the lockdowns?

  7. I've also been a victim of this guy's business practices including receiving incessant spam, despite multiple removal requests. On a professional level, the way this guy behaves and presents himself, his company, and responds to questions and/or criticisms online are terrible. Always plays the victim and constantly brings up his health issues as excuses.

He was banned from KVR and used to have posting abilities on /r/audioproductiondeals but that was removed. On /r/vsti he was given a temporary ban for violating the subreddit's policies, then he used an alt account to continue doing what he was banned for which resulted in a permanent ban. Being limited on Reddit and banned from KVR are not good for marketing.

I don't think his business woes are as a result of covid. More likely, he has upset his past customers for a variety of reasons including spam. Any potential customers doing some google searching would quickly realize they would be better to spend their money elsewhere.

It's almost like actions have consequences. The chickens have come home to roost.

remember something to the effect that the code would be emailed after 24 hours or maybe 48 hours.

I thought so too, but I'm reading in the comment section on the video that they posted a link in the live chat which only worked during the video. If that's the case, I'm not happy. I find live chat on YouTube as annoying and distracting, and I hope that Focusrite isn't considering this fulfilled.

Is there anyone here from Focusrite?

  9. I attended the live stream, start to finish. I didn't see any code, and youtube went to a different video when the livestream ended. I tried going back and the chat replay is turned off. I've been looking for an email with a code, nothing has arrived.

    Count me disappointed.

  10. Good that they reversed their boneheaded decision, however, I'm done with them. Generally, there are much better plugins from other companies that actually value their customers. The slap in the face from Waves management was the wake-up call I guess many of us needed. Some are quick to forgive and forget, others have already moved on and let that be a lesson to Waves and other companies.

  11. If any of you are after a great-sounding reverb and have a powerful CPU, my initial impressions of Neoverb are extremely positive.

Depending on the settings it can chew up a chunk of CPU all on its own. I'm running an instance of it on a verb-send track and it ranges from perhaps 20-ish percent to over 30 percent. That said, it sounds really really good. My go-to reverb has been PhoenixVerb for a long while, and granted Neoverb probably has code from PhoenixVerb in it. I'm really impressed with the sound quality and how tweakable this is.

If you have $10 burning a hole through your pocket, and you don't know what to get with today's $20 voucher, this would be a solid choice.
