  1. Lots of accusations in that thread. I wouldn't have any idea whether they were true or not. Some people claim to have proof of such and such; why not post them (or partially redacted screenshots) in addition to making assertions?

To subscribe or not to subscribe: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to pay for software on a monthly or annual basis,
or to take arms against a sea of troubles and pay for a one-time license.
    To subscribe, to pay: perchance to have access to updates and support;
aye, there's the rub: for in that subscription of payments, what updates may come,
when we have succumbed to Apple's newest architecture, must give us pause.
    There's the respect that makes calamity of so long life;
for who would bear the whips and scorns of monthly payments, the software bugs and compatibility issues,
the pangs of despised updates, the support's delay,
the insolence of customer service and the spurns that patient merit of the unworthy takes,
when he himself might his quietus make with a bare one-time purchase?
Who would subscriptions bear, to grunt and sweat under the music producer's life,
but that the dread of something after purchase,
the undiscovered country from whose bourn no customer returns,
puzzles the will and makes us rather bear those ills we have than fly to others that we know not of?

Well done - I did like that :)

One more thing on Apple's product pricing: apparently, four wheels for a Mac Pro costs £699.00

How do you know which games are free each week? Where do I sign up for a mailing list or something about this?

Like abacab mentioned, you have to visit the Epic store each week either with the link above, or by opening the Epic app (if you have it installed). I have a weekly calendar reminder every Thursday just to open up the Epic app and have a look.

Who is to say memory leaks are a security patch or a bug update?

They're bug updates. Memory leaks don't mean data is leaking to other processes; it's more that an app is taking some memory to do something, not releasing it when the task is done, and then taking more memory to do the same thing again later. When done once or twice, it's not too much of an issue (though it's still bad in principle); it's when it happens in a loop for hundreds or millions of times that the problem becomes very apparent.

That said, bugs and security updates sometimes get all bundled in the same update.

And here I cancelled my 4eva29 (never to be had again, until it can be). 😠

If you wait long enough, chances are you'll get it for cheaper either with a $75 voucher, or during a flash sale. No idea how long that will be though.

The bundles also go up in cost over time as well, so the cost to on-board keeps going up with new additions. I think the MCompleteBundle is roughly $200 more on sale than when I got it (had 99 plugins at that time).

Yikes - I hadn't noticed that! Can't really say it's unfair if it contains more plugins over time though.

Yesterday I purchased 8Dio's Claire Flute.  Today got a 10$ coupon for the Soundpaint 2004 Flute Platinus.  Are they the same?  What would be different or additional about the Soundpaint version?

    Very confused about this.

    C2

Not sure if they're the same base sample set.

8Dio and Soundpaint are different platforms. Think of 8Dio libraries as more traditional sampled Kontakt libraries, whereas Soundpaint is a new proprietary engine that's probably more geared towards sound design rather than orchestral mockup at this time. There's a lot of marketing hype behind Soundpaint, but people don't appear overly impressed with Soundpaint libraries (yet) - though it is still early days for the platform. With Soundpaint, you can import different sounds and layer them up, so it could make for some interesting sonic textures. Be aware that Soundpaint libraries generally have larger disk footprints than their 8Dio counterparts.

Thanks for all of the input guys!  I ended up springing for a 48'' LG UHD OLED monitor on a huge sale at lg.com and rationalized that this is one purchase I don't want to and probably won't be able to make again. Once I get my studio all put together I'll figure out if it was the right choice.  🙃

Congratulations; I'm sure you'll love it. When it's all set up, do feel free to make us jealous with some pics if you're up for sharing!

  9. Also note that Frozen Plain have started moving to their own Mirage platform/player - these do not require Kontakt.

That said, I don't think they're identical. Phoenix Kontakt allows up to six sound sources/layers to play simultaneously, whereas the Mirage engine appears to only allow three. I could be wrong on that though, as I don't have any Mirage libraries.

Slow Mirage appears to have three simultaneous sound layers, whereas the Kontakt version only has two.

  10. Depending on the type of TV, you might have to watch out for screen burn if you leave a static image/UI on there for too long. Also (and this might just be the one that I've tried), there might be slight (but noticeable) refresh rate/lag issues when moving your mouse around.

I have about 40 PA Plugins.  My offer for the 2022 bundle is $799?
In my Gmail acccount, I have about 5 plugins.  My offer - $499?

    Methinks PA has some issues

They're probably using some heuristic that says if someone's bought 40 plugins, they're more likely to be willing to pay $799; someone with 5 plugins either has limited interest or spending power and so they can have a more tempting/affordable offer like $499.

This is just a guess of course. My personal offer was $799, which is a bit too uncomfortable to complete my collection.

Thanks for the meaningless offer Toontrack!    They should have listed only the items that you could actually use the code with.

It's not completely meaningless. If I understand that correctly, it just means that you can't use the code for their instruments or related bundles.

I haven't tried yet, but it looks like you can still buy discounted MIDI 6-packs or get an additional discount on the various sound expansions that are already on sale.

I was wondering when somebody was going to take advantage of all the processing power just sitting there!!

I've seen a few plugins that already use the GPU to accelerate their UIs, so it's not a completely untapped resource at the moment. Doing the actual processing on the GPU is a relatively new idea in audio. I think one thing we have to keep in mind is that powerful graphics cards can be loud; background noise and music production don't really go together too well though.
