    This might be a question you're not allowed to answer, but is it difficult to break the connection between the plugins and the dongle? I don't mean in an illegal crack way; I mean as a company that has access to the source code. I'm just wondering from the point of view that if a company wanted to stop using a dongle copy protection scheme, is most of the effort in changing the code (and subsequently getting a new scheme in place), or getting the decision approved?

  2. I was having a look at some of the SDXs, and it's kinda odd - both Roots expansions (sticks, and brushes) are reduced in price, but the bundle (that contains both) is not: right now, it's cheaper to buy both individually than to get the bundle.

  3. I too love SD3, but I was tempted into pre-ordering Modo Drum. I thought as a modelled instrument, it might be possible to easily change between different tools (i.e. brushes). Alas, no brushes (yet?).

    On the plus side, the ride has a dedicated fader (I know: it's not 'realistic' when recording live drums, and you can also add a custom mic in SD3), and there's lots of tweakability.

    If that actually happened a while ago, I would have looked more seriously at Cubase as an alternative DAW. Not saying Cubase isn't serious; more that I personally prefer to be dongle-free... and also to not have to pay for minor-point releases.

    Unrelated, I've used both Firefly and Glitch on final projects.  Other bus comps are better than Firefly but the fact I can install it on multiple machines I own can make transfering projects much easier than some of the alternatives.

    Thanks Brian: you actually ended up mentioning all of the plugs I was eyeing up.

    I was trying to find independent reviews of Oracle/Nebula, but couldn't really find any other than from Plugin Boutique. I've seen Firefly mentioned positively a few times here, but I have so many other compressors now; thought I'd give Glitch a skip seeing as I have Gross Beat and iZotope Stutter Edit. Still interested in Union though.

    Cool track, by the way. Going out on a limb here, but is that AAS lounge lizard you're using for keys?

    When it was first released, it was slightly north of that. I admin I haven't been following PA's pricing.

    I wasn't taking aim at anyone; just stating differences between audio and MIDI loops. As I said, I have no problem with either loops, or anyone who uses them. While there are a few posts that are derogatory towards loop based music in this thread, I can also see there are a few people who have decided to upgrade to the latest version of Acid Pro.   9. If someone wants to use loops, that's fine and I have absolutely no problem with either them or their music: if it sounds good, it's good music regardless of how they made it.

    That said, it's not entirely the case that MIDI loops with a decent VI are the same as audio loops. Audio loops will always sound exactly the same, even if perfectly time/pitch shifted. With MIDI loops, you could tweak the output: maybe you'd like one iteration p while another f, or you might want to crescendo a build-up. You could automate a volume/LPF envelope on an audio loop, but with some VIs you might get different instrument timbres at different velocities that go beyond volume and EQ differences. A VI might also have round-robin samples that make different loop iterations sound ever so slightly different, or you might also have different reverb options depending on how dry the audio loops are. These are all very subtle differences that may or may not get picked up by the end listener, but the differences are still there.

    But as I previously mentioned, if it sounds good, the producer did a great job and it's good music regardless of the tools/sound sources used in production.

    Maybe now... but once upon a time, before subscriptions were available, and before someone got greedy, it was probably more around $6,000 at full price. It only got that way because for some reason, a new line of thought came along that also deemed $300 a good price tag to put on a flanger. Good thing it's a really good flanger… or at least it should be for that much.

    Agree with you there. The bigger libs take so much longer to load as well; I still use GPO as my sketching library. The only problem is that sometimes the instrument ranges are different, so I end up having to re-arrange/rewrite some parts.
