That's pretty helpful actually. I wonder if there's a quick way to hear a sample of the instruments before downloading though. I feel like I'm gunna be downloading for days before I find what I'm looking for.

I am sort of in the same place you are. This forum has been very helpful. So far, for me anyway, I am okay with the free bass, piano and drum modules that come with CakeWalk but the only guitar instruments are in TTS-1 and those sound more like keyboards than guitars. I have tried every free guitar instrument I can find and none have a sound that suits except Ample Sounds free Acoustic Guitar. I like some of the paid electric guitar sounds from Ample Sounds and I will probably go that route at some point in the future. I wish there was some place that sold some entry level guitar instruments at lower prices but if it exists I can't find it.

    Good luck,

@yeto First, sorry I've made typo in previous comment (KOSP > KSOP)

KSOP is assigned key switches to change articulations. (Probably Key Switch Operation Patch?)
VSOP is assigned velocities to change articulations. (Probably Velocity Switch Operation Patch?)

    These are described in "Standard_Guitar_Manual_EN.pdf".
So please read it carefully...  Good luck!

Thank you. I now see that in the 1st paragraph (as he slaps his forehead).

Thanks again for all the help,

Unreal Instruments Standard Guitar is DI (Direct input) sounds. So it needs guitar effects, Amp sim, Cabinet sim, etc to get the distorted guitar sound. TH3 has all of them. You can also search and try other effects and simulators.

I think you should select Standard Guitar KOSP patch in sforzando. That's patch is key switch version so it's not so difficult to use, I think.
First, you have to learn basic operation (key switches) with checking Standard_Guitar_Manual_EN.pdf.
You can also check the behavior with sample midi files (Standard_Guitar_Demo.mid etc). They are in [Standard Guitar_Manual] > [Sample_MIDI_Files]

BTW, you might have to learn how to make the distorted guitar sound, I think...

"I think you should select Standard Guitar KOSP"

What is the difference between KOSP and VSOP?

I have been working really hard with Sforzando and I am getting closer to the sound I am looking for. I appreciate all your help. I will post what I end up with once I find the right sound in hopes it will help someone else. It took me a while to understand that Sforzando is like my Les Paul "unpluged". I am now in the process of finding an amp sim that will mimic my Carvin 6l6gc/12ax7 tube amp.

Again, thanks for all the help,

Yes, when snap is enabled the grid lines bisect the hot spots for note placement. With Aim Assist and snap enabled in the PRV, the placement of a note is shown by Aim Assist.

    This only time this

is true is the left edge of the PRV.  Otherwise, there is just as much space to the right of the grid line as the left to place a note that starts at the grid line.

To change the snap from centering the hot spot on the grid to starting at the grid line is a feature request (or a bug report depending on the devs point of view).

Has any of this changed with the new update?

Standard Guitar is sfz soundfont for loading with sforzando, not VST plugin. So it's not necessary of locating under VST scan path and you have to load within sforzando. BTW, have you installed sforzando?

Insert sforzando as soft synth in Cakewalk and then drop "Standard Guitar.bank.xml" file to sforzando. (needs this operation once only at the first time to regist Standard Guitar to sforzando)

    Anyway, download [Standard Guitar_Manual]
and then read "Installation guide_EN.pdf" and "Standard_Guitar_Manual_EN.pdf".

I have everything installed and I have read the Manual but I don't see how to add gain/distortion? Also, the up/down arrows next to Vibrato, Length, Release and Slides don't do anything. What am I missing?

    Try this -

Download and install sforzando (it is an sfz player - similar to the Studio Instruments in CbB but not limited to the instruments bundled with CbB).

    Search Google for "guitar sfz"

Grab a few of the sfz files and try them out (still may need an ampsim or extra effects)

Probably the best solution for $0.

BTW, I see the makers of sforzando have a collection of instruments here

I watched a YouTube video that compared the two Sforzando guitar instruments to two Ample Sound instruments. The Sforzandos sounded just as good to me.  I am going to download and try those two instruments later today. Thank you for sharing the link.

Synths that can process audio data will mention it somewhere in their write  up.

That said, if you are trying for a realistic guitar sound, it's not going to happen on the cheap with soft synths.

If you want to modify the character of TTS-1 put an ampsim in the FX Rack. CbB comes with TH3.

Since you have a guitar, the best way to get a guitar sound in the DAW is record the guitar. If you cannot record using the amp then record direct and run it through the ampsim.

Thank you for taking time to answer my question. I am going to check out ampsims. If nothing else I will learn in the process.

Thank you for having patience with my simple/amateur questions,

While some synth plug-ins pull double duty as effects plug-ins the TAL Noisemaker is not one of them.

One could use both TTS-1 and TAL Noisemaker, each on their own track, to generate sounds and blend the two but there is no other way for the TAL Noisemaker to modify audio coming out of TTS-1.

What would I look for in a synth that could pull double duty? Would I just go to a page like this and find something I think would work for me?

  11. Sorry for all the amateur questions.

Would it be possible for me to combine on an instrument track (so I can use PRV) TTS-1 and TAL NoiseMaker? I am thinking I could start out with the guitar presets in TTS-1 and then modify those sounds with TAL Noisemaker to get any guitar sound I wanted. Would this have a chance of working? Also, if this could work would there be a better synth versus TAL NoiseMaker to accomplish this? I am trying to emulate my own equipment (Les Paul Custom guitar and a Carvin 6L6gc/12ax7 tube amp).

Thank you in advance for any help,

I was going to say that most 3rd party VST's default to the Steinberg folder and I didn't see that on your list.

It's the first thing I do on a fresh install is include the 2 Steinberg vst folders where I keep all my 3rd party stuff.  There be one under "Program files" and another under "Program Files (x86) "

I just spent last night looking over all the Black Friday deals, In the process I found a dozen very cool freebies. The JRR shop and Black Rooster as example.   The Ample P bass lite is my main bass now. Only limitation is it doesn't go below E. I also use the Guitar plug in if a midi track has something worthwhile , most don't. But that one seems a bit better than Strum Session to me.

Thank you. This is helpful. The Black Rooster stuff sounds really good.

Yeah, I'll second TH3. It's a guitar amp emulator from Overloud  included with Bandlab. Insert an audio track, click effects and select TH3 from the guitar category.

Drag an amp from the window on the right into the main window, easy from there. It does work.

Remember to enable the echo (monitor) button.

Okay, I have the above done so far but I don't see how to enter notes in PRV???

Thank you for taking time out of your day to try and help,

Make sure to only add folders that contain VST2/3 dlls.

Never duplicate folders. In this scan path

    vst.JPG

the second path is a duplicate because it is already in the scan path as it is under the first path. That said, check exactly where the spicy guitar dll is located. That is the path that should be scanned. Added unnecessary paths and scanning areas that do not contain plug-in dlls can create problems.

Usually VST2 plug-ins have an option in their installer for VST2 install path and display where the plug-in will be installed. You could uninstall then reinstall the plug-in and see where the plug-in dll is actually installed. It may be in one of the first two paths in the image or it could be somewhere else.

As far as CbB and its scanner are concerned, it does not matter where plug-ins are installed as long as the plug-in dll is in the scan path.

A scan log may help. The option is shown on the preference screen above.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. This is the file that worked:

    VST Directory: C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Vstplugins

Thank you for taking time out of your day to help,

Impulse Response files need to be loaded into an IR player.

After a quick glance at the Ownhammer, it appears they only supply the IR files.

CbB comes with a version TH3 which has IR Cabinet component and REmatrix Solo an IR Reverb. I don't care for either when using 3rd party IR files because both plug-ins must import the files rather than simply reading them from disk.

Instead, I would use one of the IR plug-ins from MeldaProduction. MConvolution is free and the license for the MXFreeBundle is only $28. Yes, the bundle is free but purchasing a license comes with benefits, see https://www.meldaproduction.com/MFreeFXBundle

Another free IR plug-in is Convolution XT. I have no experience with it but it looks pretty good.

The IR plug-in goes in the audio track FX Rack. Still that just covers the cabinet IRs, still need to figure out what sound source to use for the guitar and amp. I will leave that to users that rely on plug-in tech for suggestions. When I need a guitar sound, I record it. I might go through an amp sim like TH3 which is bundled with CbB.

Thank you for helping. I think this is going to be over my head. I am going to look for something simpler. I am glad I asked about this as I have learned a lot from your response.

    Kind regards,

  16. Hi,

I downloaded this software but I can't figure out how to use it. Can someone point me in the right direction? I want to enter some notes in PRV and then have them sound like they are coming out of a Mesa Boogie guitar amp. Also, if anyone would know of a virtual instrument that sounds like a Les Paul/Mesa Boogie combination that might would be easier. As you can tell from my questions I am still learning.
