  1. Would anyone know the name of the instrument that is like two ceramic (not sure of material) rods approximately 1" x 6" in size that you tap together to get a high pitched "tink" sound? I think it is mostly used in Latin music. I have tried searching on Google for Latin music instruments but I am not finding the instrument or the name.

    Thank you,
    yeto

  2. I found this free software for creating backing tracks.

I have been trying this software for a few days now and I am finding it very useful for creating quick backing tracks for song writing purposes. The home page gives you an overview of the software. It really is free. There is no trial period type catch or anything of that sort. It has a good forum and help pages. You can get a response from the person who wrote the software. I am not connected with this company in any way, shape or form except that I have been using the software for a few days now.

Yes, once you have your tracks in MIDI format, the sky's the limit as far as what you can do with it in terms of sounds with Cakewalk, even if you have no money to invest at this time.

Get SampleTank Free CS 4, which has many really good sounds, Kontakt Komplete Start, 6GB of free high quality content, or even just start with the SI Strings, Drums, and Piano, and TTS-1 and put on some effects.

Thank you. I am going to give that a try.

LoopBe1 gives you up to 16 channels of MIDI data coming out of JJazzLab or ChordPulse directly into CbB allowing you to make instrument assignments in CbB using regular synth plug-ins.

Once setup, CbB can record the MIDI in real time or just use it as a sound source while composing in JJazzLab or ChordPulse then export the a MIDI file to use in CbB.

Thank you. CbB is awesome. Always something new for me to learn. Thank you for taking time to help. My songs keep getting better and better thanks to this forum.

Remember tools like this do not lock you into their sounds. They can send MIDI directly to your DAW using a virtual MIDI cable such as LoopBe1.

    Thank you. This is helpful.

I was thinking of taking the backing track and placing it in CbB as an audio track and then adding my lead guitar and vocal tracks. I know I wouldn't have as much control over the individual instrument parts but I was hoping it would be good enough to demo the songs I write. If I understand what you are sharing I could add the backing track as a .mid file and maintain control over the individual instrument parts.

    Interesting, thanks Yeto.

Band-in-a-box has been my goto for this kind of thing (or ChordPulse for a small footprint alternative).

I will definitely check it out though and the price is right :)

I have the paid version of ChordPulse as well but it doesn't seem to have the rhythm patterns or sound quality that JJazzLab has. It took me a few days to get comfortable with JJazzLab but I think I like it better versus ChordPulse. I don't want to say anything bad about ChordPulse though as it is good and works as advertised.

  8. The below is some information I found on the internet. Would the below technique work related to that some guitar instrument plugins sound more like keyboards instead of guitars and I was wondering that if by using this method the guitar part would sound more "strummed" versus all the notes of a chord being played at the same time?

"If you have more than one guitar channel, it is recommended not to play the chords at the exact
same tick, but to move one of the guitars some ticks. (app. 15 ticks in 480 ticks per quarter note
resolution, more in faster rhythms). Otherwise the rhythm will sound "mechanical". The longer
between the notes the "softer" the rhythm will be."

    Thank you,
    yeto

Thanks I hadn't seen this before but also liked Emvoice. I had a quick listen to the demo videos and they sound OK though not quite as good as Emvoice imho but then again it's only 80 USD for the full version.

I will give the demo a try. There is only one English voice (Eleanor) but hopefully they will bring out some more soon.

I made the following changes which helped the sound to be more human versus robotic.

In Voice Database Settings I changed Tension to -1.00 and Breathiness to 1.00.

Do you have any tips you can share related to making phrases sound more human?

***Added Comment: After working with this for approx. 1 week I am really starting to like this software. It is easy to input lyrics. I am having to use the "tricks of the trade" on some lyrics to get them to sound more American versus Asian but outside of that this software is pretty amazing. It is getting good reviews here as well.

I don't have a vested interest in this software...just sharing in case anyone is interested.

Unfortunately Daisy is no longer available.  There was another female - Nata was her name (if I recall correctly), and she too is no longer available.   Seems a shame that Plogue has pretty much given up development on AlterEgo - it's always been a favorite of mine.

Thank you for your help. I did some research and I think I might try "Synthesizer V". It is the closest thing to Emvoice that I can find. I like Emvoice but I can't afford $200 at this time.

    Thank you for your help,

I have not tested this yet, but I wrote a PM to report these issues.  I don't think we should have to use work-arounds for things that worked in previous versions.

As for me, I prefer having the tools within the Staff View pane/window (as opposed to on the Control Bar which I prefer not to use when I am entering/editing note data in the Staff View), so I don't mind using Sonar 3.

I don't use staff view so my work around might cause other problems as well. Your method is probably best.

I close Snap function(toggle smart grid mode) , it still cannot move notes.

Are you in Piano Roll View and are you seeing the "cross" when you hover over the note that you want to move? The cross will have up, down, left and right arrows. If you are only seeing left and right arrows then you can extend or shorten the note but you cannot move the note. You have to keep moving the cursor over the note until you get the cross.

Yes, but the point of the forumula was simplify it to:

    -120/1,25 = -96 ticks

Yes, I understood that...I just was not completely understanding. It's not your fault that I couldn't fully grasp all the numbers and I greatly appreciate all your help. Although I have the number I was looking for "-96" I would still like to know where the 1.25 comes from. I am just not seeing it from the formula you provided.

    "ticks =  beats/minute x 960 ticks/beat / 60000 ms/minute x 50 ms --> beats/minute  x  0.8  --> Tempo / 1.25"

I still don't understand how you arrived at 1.25.

  14. 19 minutes ago, scook said:

Adding parentheses to aid in reading

    (960/60000)*50 = 0.8

960 is the default number of ticks per quarter note set in preferences

There are 60000 milliseconds in a minute

reducing the units in the formula to determine the units of the result

    ((beat/minute)*(ticks/beat)/(ms/minute))*ms

    simplifies to

    ((ticks/minute)/(ms/minute))*ms

    simplifies to

    (ticks/ms)*ms

    or

    ticks

So for my guitar part/song (the tempo is 120 BPM):
    (step 1) 120 * 960 / 60000 = 1.92
    (step 2) 1.92 * 50ms (the delay AmpleSound recommends) = 96 ticks
(step 3) I would enter -96 in the Time+ input box so that my rhythm guitar part will align with the rest of my tracks. I also have my song starting at the 3rd measure.

    Do I have everything correct?

Thank all of you for helping and not flaming for all my amateur questions. I did go to approx. 10 different websites to study but I just couldn't get everything to click.

Indirectly, yes. It just happens that I like to use 125bpm as a baseline for relating ticks to milliseconds at a given tempo because it's exactly 2 ticks/ms, making the math easy.

Here's the full derivation; you would substitute a different 'delay' value in ms to get the simplified formula for a different delay:

    ticks =  beats/minute x 960 ticks/beat / 60000 ms/minute x 50 ms --> beats/minute  x  0.8  --> Tempo / 1.25

EDIT: And, of course, you need to enter a negative value in time+ to advance the AmpleGuitars track, effectively delaying the rest of the project relative to it; so the formula gets a minus sign:  - Tempo / 1.25

This is great information to have. Again, thank you for taking time to help.

Positive values delay playback of the offset track against the rest of the project, and negative values advance it. But it's fixed value in MIDI ticks, so you'll have to calculate the offset for a given, fixed project tempo.

To advance the Ampleguitars track by 50ms:

    Offset = - Tempo / 2.5

Thank you for taking time out of your day to reply. This is very helpful.
