I just spent 2 hours with Mixcraft using it for the very first time. I have yet cracked the manual.
I created  a drum loop dragged it out with out issues.  I added my guitar- I quickly edited a few bloopers. I even used Melodyne which seems to work better here.  I recorded bass, converting it to midi and just finished editing it. If it had a smart tool I’d be happier but you quickly get used to shot cuts. The thing that makes this work is everything is clearly labeled and intuitive.
Not bad at all for a super low price ( it’s on sale)

I too am planning on carrying on with Sonar but have definitely decided I will not Lease it. And I now have a general idea of what prices are offered by the competition.

Hey John, How's mixcraft on cpu?  Any idea on studio one? I'm just looking to keep my options open.

Hey Scook, quick question, has this function been taken away or deprecated in some form?  I have a source project that I saved a recall of.  I was doing an alternate mix of the exact same project in another saved session. It got a bit away from me, so I decided to use your technique to go back to the originals levels and such, but it doesn't do anything at all.

EDIT: Never mind, I realized why it wasn't working.  I had floated a group of tracks to a different position in track view.  As soon as I remembered and floated them back, I was able to place the mix recall in place no problem.  Anyhow, my fault, user error.

I did watch the videos, I still can't hear anything. I don't know why you think I'm not trying to do anything. I first thought it was an issue with my computer so I let the windows people go into my computer and check everything. My computer is working fine and all my settings are correct too. This is a different issue than my previous post. I figured that out once I had gotten the comments. Now I straight up can't hear anything at all.

More info will help people help you. What are you listening on, what do you use to connect audio devices to your computer?  Listing what your setup is like might help someone point you to a solution.

I'm personally not interested in a full-blown theme editor. But I think it would be nice to see more colour tweaks available in preferences.

I also think there's a gap in the current set of themes, and there should be at least one that's a bit more high contrast.

This right here. I have a hard time differentiating between the background, the waveform and the gui.  It feels like all one thing, with very little to discern what's what on my screen.

To add to this the “flat” look is intentional. Sonar theming is generally not going for a 3d look on buttons for definition. I suspect thats what you are comparing and finding different. It may take a little getting used to but its not less defined even to my eyes and I’m not young by any stretch of the imagination :)

Personally, I don't care that it looks "flat" but I myself have never enjoyed the inverse clip colors where the "meat" of the sound is bright and the background is dark/black.  It hurts my eyes like nobodies business.  Each version of sonar that has had it since 6 or X I can't remember, I've gone through the trouble of changing it or getting a theme on here that has it inverse.  My 2 cents, but it's not all about style for some of us.

  6. I don't have an issue with the general flat look of it all, but that color scheme is hard on the eyes yeesh! I know that there are other color schemes under the hood, but they didn't do much for that department either, imho.   I hope they allow themers to start modding again, cause I can't see myself using it long term the way it looks right now.

This will be the first product I’ve own (I got it for free a couple of years back) that I have to stop using it because the company stopped making it. Maybe one where consumables were no longer available but this a first.

When dragging clips to desktop, etc., the names change to reflect the project name followed by sequential numbering system.

    clipnames1.JPG.fcdc3646e40a68193f4fc68028410c7c.JPG

Instead I would like drag-exported clips to retain their clip name.

    clipnames.JPG.6b5f5bacd6f9962bdb7376a6cd1269a9.JPG

This helps identify what the clips are once they leave the project without having to rename them, which can be tedious when migrating several clips.

I'd like a modified version of your idea and the original way. So the clip name, with an underscore and the project details at the end.  Like that we get the best of both worlds, knowing what the file actually is, but also where it might've come from.

  9. I've had this issue for ages.  What I tend to do is set up my markers, however many I need, and zoom in to the sample level and make sure they are on grid one by one.  Since I don't like doing this every single damn time, I've just got 3 basic templates set up to build projects from that I go to now, and I haven't done this in a while.  Sorry you're having trouble with this.

    Hi,

A recent plugin update appears to have pushed my CPU usage up to the point where I am having to keep an eye on the performance module for the first time (not 100% sure which plugin, but I suspect NI Kontakt's usage has increased by a fair amount). I noticed in the manual that a few late buffers should not cause a glitch - quote:

"Note: It's OK to have a few sporadic late buffers during playback since it will not result in audible glitches."

To the question - does anyone know how many late buffers should cause concern? I had a track generate 3 late buffers which I did not hear cause glitches, but I would prefer not to miss something and then hear it after mastering the track.

As a side question, is there any way of monitoring plugin CPU usage so I can track down the CPU hog? Thanks.

You've got to give a little more info in order to help. What are your specs, what's your system like, interface, computer, hardware etc.?  That said, a few spikes won't matter as long as everything is playing along fine.  What setting do you have the interface set to? (Bit depth, sample rate, buffer)?

The trouble is, they are all excellent plugins but have an outdated look. That’s all. They are bright and simple. Everything now has to be dark and look like it’s a vintage rack device.

And we do have good reasons to be a bit nervous about the DX format and how much longer it will be OK now that it is no longer supported

I sort of stopped using them only for that reason.

You tube is getting worse and worse for the amount of unqualified presenters spreading misinformation.
I just was watching a few Audio interface reviews and each one had totally different information about the same interfaces. It’s all one person’s opinion so hopefully the punters are smart enough to figure that out. But these people get 2k views so there’s money in spreading dribble.
I sure hope Bandlab hires a professional video maker to produce the tutorials for Sonar like they did 10 years ago. Otherwise it will be a s—t show again like it is now.

I get what you're trying to say, but Ben Jordan is a very successful and respected musician, producer etc etc in the industry.  As someone who loves Sonar and has wanted this DAW to not only survive but get the recognition it's due, I think it's pretty cool someone who actually works in the biz is giving cakewalk it's props to his followers.

Yes, @Helios.G, I am aware of being able to use the Browser to search for plug-ins (and list plug-ins by Category, etc.), but sometimes I just instinctively click on the + button in the FX section to insert one (and often have the Browser window closed).

Just seems like a design quirk/bug that the menu closes when you'd think it would remain open based on what you're doing.

Yeah, I guess since I setup my menu the way I like forever ago, I don't find myself needing to change its layout. I can see how that'd be annoying.

+1 on AD2 vs EZD3. i use the EZD (sometimes but not often) to create the parts but mostly use the AD2 to render as the EZ stuff (all of them really) are overly processed, and a lot of it seems baked in, even after turning off effects. so it's hard (for me) to get the EZ audio where i want, whereas the AD2 i can turn off the processing and have the raw samples (if i need them raw versus the various level of kit preset processing).

i will note that the EZD3 does let you substitute a simple sample on each instrument fairly easily which can be handy, but will not have the same set of dynamics their built-in samples have. and i don't have time to really tinker with it...

Agreed on all fronts Glenn.  I'd also add that if you do decide to use the preset mixes on each software drummer, Addictive just sounds that much more "professional" out the box than ez does to me.  Just my 2 cents, but I've heard Addictive on actual top 40 tracks several times with nothing on the preset changed but the pattern played.  To date, I haven't recognized any ez drum "sound" out in the wild.

Minor annoyance but I hope it will change in new Sonar...

Whenever you change the Plug-in Layout view, it's almost always because you are looking for an FX (or Instrument) to insert, so the menu should not disappear, forcing you to open it again.

Example:  In screenshot below, I want to find an FX to insert, but want to change the view from the current "Sort by Category" to, say, "Sort by Manufacturer", so I can continue my search.

But when I make my selection, the menu disappears! Now I have to click the + sign to add an effect, etc. to get back to the same menu. Very counterintuitive and a waste of mouse clicks.

Question, can you not use the built in search in the plugin section? It's much faster than scrolling through deep plugin menus imho.

I have AD2, EZD2 and EZD3. I think they’re all great. The fact that AD2 hasn’t been updated in the last years is to me of less importance; the 21 drums kits, 14 additional kit pieces and 32 MIDI packs available should cover most genres.

As for MIDI packs, if you indeed want more MIDI in AD2, you can always buy MIDI packs from Toontrack and use them with AD2. To do that, in the AD2 Hamburger menu, just change the default mapping to EZD by selecting Map Window > Map Preset > Other Plugins >  TT – EZ. You don't even have to go through your DAW; just drag the MIDI from EZD right into the BEATS tab in AD2. And hey presto. Of course, for this to work you'd also need EZD installed.

Nice tip Canopus.  I personally love ez drummers interface and "ease" for putting quick drum arrangements together, but addictive drums sounds better to me, regardless if it hasn't been updated in a few years.

Don't get me wrong, I don't intend to be an apologist; in my perfect world, Sonar will get comprehensive theme editing so that we can have skeuomorphic images or flat as our hearts desire.

As I said, "whether we like it or not." My preference is for at least a slight bit of shading, it gives the eye something to "grab."

I was just musing out loud about why the trend may have happened. I use iOS devices, and I remember when Apple dumped iOS' skeuomorphic look in favor of a flat look. It's been a long time for that, and a whole new generation of people who don't even remember what iOS looked like back then.

It remains to be seen whether the current flat and dark trend in UI's will stick, or whether at some point skeuomorphic and shaded will be a cool retro look. In the meantime, Mixbus ain't so expensive. 😏

Also, I meant to caution the OP about putting too much time and effort into learning Theme Editor. The feature will not be included in Cakewalk Sonar. Considering how many themes I created, how much time and effort went into them, you can imagine how I feel about that. Theme Editor became a pastime all its own, and a valuable one, as it really made me up my pixel editing game.

I see what you mean, I respect that. Yeah, as far as I've heard, the new sonar won't permit it at all at 1st.  I saw a screenshot of the one that was leaked a few months ago somewhere, and lets just say I'm not a big fan of the new look.  Hopefully that was just some prank and the real thing doesn't resemble what I saw 😂

Unfortunately no. And doubly unfortunate for you, the Sonar UI is specifically being changed to be more flat.

Whether we like it or not, that's the trend in UI design, and Cakewalk was falling behind.

The trend doesn't surprise me, we're collectively getting more used to using computers to do things that we used to use physical objects to do.

For instance, with the Step Sequencer, there's no reason for the pixels we click on to make a cell active to try to resemble buttons we would press in the physical world. Most people using a computer step sequencer will by this time never have touched or even seen a hardware sequencer. If we're not already, we'll soon be at that point with mixing boards.

There's no practical reason for a Console View "slider" to look like we'd be able to grab it and move it. The original reason for it to look "real" was to give us a feeling of familiarity and comfort when transitioning from a hardware mixer to a software one, and that reason is (no pun) fading away.

Maybe that's why simulated woodgrain has fallen so far out of fashion: having lived with higher quality plastics for so many decades, we no longer need to see "wood" as a point of familiarity and quality.

Respectfully, there are many of us, me included, who use mixing surfaces to control our daws.  These look and feel just like a console, and in some cases integrate function/function directly with a daws layout. Maybe this would ring true for bedroom/home studio producers, but many people work on large format mixing surfaces just like in the old console days.

You must be using a global audio folder. If you use per-project audio then you would have folders for each project with just that projects audio in it. It makes it easier to clean up unused audio files and move the project around.

    image.thumb.png.3cd70615a53afbf697c4802d69759fb0.png

Melodynes files bypass that, regardless of how you setup your project folders.  It's audio is sent to a specific "separations" folder usually in the documents section of windows under Celemony.

I do not know if this is recent behavior or not, but this morning I noticed that 10 newly-inserted audio tracks in a project are having their Output set to the project's Guitar Lead bus, rather than to the expected setting to the Master bus. (This project has multiple buses - keyboards, strings, guitars, drums, etc.)

I grabbed a screen shot to show one of the tracks this happened to, the Keyboard Stem, and I have the first few buses shown as well.  I thought perhaps it picked the Guitar Lead bus because it was the 1st bus I had added to the project, but it turns out that the Guitar Lead bus is the 2nd bus I had added to the project, so I have no guess as to what might trigger the unexpected Output setting.  (The 1st bus I had inserted into the project was the Guitar bus, not the Guitar Lead bus.)

I easily corrected the Output settings, for the 10 tracks I had inserted.  I am just pointing out the behavior, so folks can correct the settings, if needed on their projects.

By any chance did you open a track template from cakewalk's preinstalled ones? At least that's what that looks like to me. They have all the routing pre determined when I've done it, but I could be wrong.

Same, been waiting to see how many people this hit this morning.

Not sure.  I'm going to try what Outrage suggested though, it makes more sense to me.
