  1. This was a new one to me...I right clicked on the wav file and selected Insert Effect. I chose Cakewalk Delay. I see it open up. When I attempted to use it, it didn't respond. Upon closer inspection I found that it had opened 10 instances of Cakewalk Delay!! I closed all of them out and retried and get the same outcome. I've never seen this before. Anyone else seeing this? Big bug!

  2. Windows 10

    CbB Version 2023.09 Build 075, 64 bit

Been using Cakewalk since '95. This is a new one to me. I have a midi track using Addictive Drums 2. It's an older song I haven't done any editing on in about 3 years and thought I would give it a go after letting it sit for awhile. All the other tracks are working fine (midi, audio) except this midi track. It actually works but I see no midi data no matter what I use under View, there is no data (Piano Roll, Event List). I'm trying to figure out how AD knows how to start playing without being triggered in some way. Any suggestions?

I must respectfully disagree that music played with a free tempo is necessarily "garbage".  ;^)

I'm a big advocate for using Set Measure/Beta At Now (SM/BAN) for this purpose. But in some cases, it might be quicker - if somewhat less precise - to create a MIDI Guide Track with one note per beat (i.e. quarters), and run Fit Improvisation against that track to create the tempo map.  Audiosnap can be used to take a first whack at generating the notes of the guide track to be dialed in manually as needed, but I wouldn't recommend trying to use Audiosnap - Set Project from Clip with no manual intervention.

And, of course, there's drag-audio to-timeline to have Melondyne (Essential is available as a free add-on for CbB) to create a tempo map, but I don't like some aspects of what it does (namely interpolating "smooth" tempo changes at every 8th note even where no notes exist), and it's not always 100% accurate, either. Like Audiosnap, Melodyne might best be used for extracting MIDI to get a head start on creating a guide track for Fit Improvisation.

In any case, I would advise separating the three songs into separate projects, and trimming/dragging the audio files to start at 1:01:000 in each project - or with the first downbeat on 2:01:000 if there are pick-up notes.

I've given steps for using SM/BAN to do this many times before, but if the OP wants to share one of the tracks - or part of one - I'd be happy to have a look and give specific guidance for applying one or both methods. The exact steps needed can depend significantly on the nature of the recording

I actually did create the midi guide track with one note per beat (downbeat) for the entire 25 minute set, selected the track making sure to start at 1:01:000. Got an error message saying "Required tempo exceeds available range". So I don't know what I'm doing wrong there. I did also try Melodyne but I'm a bit unfamiiar on using it this way so I need to educate myself more on it. Just an FYI...when these songs are recorded and because of the nature of how the songs are recorded there is no way to plan ahead how long the songs will be. Otherwise I could set a click track ahead of time for the entire session. What steps would I need to go through for guidance?

  4. To the point...I have wav files recorded in a project not using a click track. The project is 25 minutes long recording session non stop (no breaks). There are 3 separate  songs within the project with varying tempos. I want to add midi drums but not without a click track.  I've looked into ways to do that from Cakewalk such as using Audio Snap and the Fit Improvisation method which are very cumbersome with a project like this. I've seen videos of alternate methods to alter the bpm using a simple midi track to determine the downbeat but can't locate it. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? Thx!

  5. I've experienced this issue for quite awhile but have said nothing about it until now - my bad.

So here is the problem. I have gone to the Preferences drop down and select Sound on sound. This works while my project is open and running. If I close out Cakewalk and come back to it later it's as though I never hit apply and OK. The settings go back to Comping.

Using Windows 10 Pro, Version 22H2

Cakewalk BandLab Version 2022.11 (Build 021, 64 BIT)

    Thx

  6. I'm not referring to the volume controller in that area...I was referring to the actual track that displays the midi notes that have been recorded. I have the volume controller drawn in on that track (seen in lower right part of video). That is where it's disappearing. Things might be changing now. I just got a new PC that is far superior according to the specs needed for Cakewalk. I'll get back to you if I see it happen again. Thanks for responding bitflipper.

  7. Hey guys - this is a new one to me. I'm working with the latest version of cakewalk By Bandlab, Windows 10. I have a midi keyboard track, I have a cakewalk Sonitus Reverb plugin on the track, and using a volume controller on the track as well.  I'm comparing the track by arming and disarming the reverb to hear if I like it or not. When I disarm the Reverb my volume controller disappears. But when I arm the reverb it does not come back. It's still there but I need to bring it back manually. I just tried adding a Pan Controller and it does the same thing. Hope the video helps. I don't know why the video is so large.  I have to zoom out to 50% to see the controller disappear at the bottom. Sorry.

  8. I use both cwp and cwb for my projects. I initially save my work on the cwp first then cwb when finished for the day.

Yes, I remember back when Cakewalk really messed up (quite a few years ago) and the bundle files were not functioning as they are supposed to. I opened and old file one day supposing everything was right. It took my wav files and moved them to different tracks, cut them up in pieces, unable to be restored without a ton of effort...not fun.

Soooo it would appear I can't just turn off that feature for any and all future projects while saving them as cwb files. Very annoying but I can live with that. Just hoping for a quick fix.

    Thanks fellas.

Hi Mark - yeah it's more of an annoyance than help to me so I just have to deal with it. Appreciate the response.

    Hi Dana,

That little magnifying glass pops up each time you place the cursor (mouse pointer) in a specific position in the time line.  There is no turning it off.  It is there to horizontally zoom in and out of the clip view by holding down the left mouse button and scrolling up or down with the mouse (or scroll wheel).

    Kind regards,

    tecknot

Thanks Teknot. It's a little annoyance to me that apparently I have to deal with.

  11. Thank you all for the suggestions and help. I'm thinking I must be doing something at the time of creating the controllers that I need to put some effort into to determine how they are linked. I'll get back to you all if I can't figure it out.

If they are moving, I guess they are somehow linked :

    I'm aware of this options:

    • The tracks are Ctrl+Selected
    • The tracks are grouped

    Hope it helps -

    I'll give that a try - thanks.

Are they unrelated clips or possibly copied as linked clips? As you probably know linked clips will be shown with dotted outlines in the track view. Otherwise have not seen that myself and don't know what could cause it other than a bug.

    Not linked or copied.

  14. I've been using controllers in Cakewalk for many moons so I know how they work, how to edit, etc. That said, I've noticed in the last 6 months or so when I move a controller (not always) and move it up or down other controllers in separate tracks get grabbed and move at the same time. I do not have these other tracks selected yet they move as though I do. I'll hit control Z to undo, then do the exact same move again and it's fine. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello, I'm a complete newbie in the music production, I started 2 weeks ago with Cakewalk because it was free.

I just want your honest opinion about it compared to the other DAWs you tried.

If i'm being honest i'm actually really mad and tilted about this software.
I work in the Visual Effects industry, which is full of very complex and advanced software with scripting, code, nodal stuff etc. so I'm no stranger to  pieces of software that are hard to master and yet Cakewalk, which should be a simple music making software, is extremelly unreliable and not intuitive at all in my opinion.
Plenty of features actually don't work as intented, audio bugs, Cakewalk splitting your work into pieces that you have to merge back together but it doesn't work 2 times out of 3. multiple crashes etc.

Is it the same with other DAWs? I was mega hyped when the thought of making some of my own tracks came up and now I'm mega tilted and on the verge of ditching everything.

    What's your take on that.
I'm probably gonna receive a very biased opinion since a non-cakewalk user wouldn't read the Cakewalk forum lol but please don't flame me.

    Thank you

Wow - you seem to set yourself up for any possible language that may offend you so I'm not sure you'll believe anything you read about Cakewalk but I will try. I have been using Cakewalk since the time of it being a midi only platform back in the 90's. The transformation to Cakewalk By Bandlab has been amazing and I love it.  I've read about other DAWs and realize two things. 1. All DAWs have flaws (wow I like that, lol). 2. They all record digital audio the same way. What you do with it is totally up to you. And btw, what kind of expectation do you have from a completely free DAW that has so much to offer? Yes all DAWs are different. I've recorded 15 tracks of audio simultaneously for 30 minutes with no issues. I use third party plugins as well as the included plugins and instruments. Basically your computer determines the complexity level of Cakewalk or any other DAW for that matter. Be sure to set up your settings correctly to ensure the best possible performance before judging it. This makes all the difference in the world. I hope this is some help to you and your experience with Cakewalk.

Glad you got it sorted out.  I always record with my ASIO Buffer Size set to 128 samples, or 64 samples, or 32 samples.  Then, when I have finished tracking/recording, and move on to mixing/mastering, I always up my ASIO Buffer Size to either 1024 or 2048 samples, depending on which of my audio interfaces I am using.

Mixing/Mastering is not adversely affected by the latency incurred from the larger buffer size(S) I set it to, for mixing/mastering, and there are multiple plugins that use Linear Phase or "Look-Ahead Processing", where having a large ASIO Buffer Size gives those more 'robust' plugins enough 'room' (buffer size) to properly do their processing.

Pretty much until the end of time, you will do best by recording with an ASIO Buffer Size of 128 or less, and then when mixing/mastering, set the ASIO Buffer size to a large value, and if additional recording needs to occur, you will change the buffer size up to either 1024 or 2048.  It is simply part of the regular processing , generally speaking, to switch between small and large buffers.

Thank you for that sir. I had not heard of this before. I really appreciate this info!

  17. I just stated using SSL EQ and SSL Comp. These two plugins are creating distortion as well.  Odd thing is, I used these on a different Cakewalk project just yesterday with no issues using these two plugins. But on this newest project bada bing...there it is. I just exported the track to give an sample of what I'm hearing. The exported track does not have the distortion on it. Odd.

    I'm running Windows 10

Cakewalk By Bandlab 2021.12 (Build 102, 64 bit)

**** Note: Well I experimented after posting this.   I changed my buffer size and it cleared up the issue.

  18. Thanks Bill - I think you are correct in what happened here yet I would think it would only duplicate the automation rather than processing them. Well, I just took a close look at my clips and I see that the gain automation changed on the pasted clips. For some reason they all returned to 0.0 dB so that's odd to me. I just took it a step further and tried going thru the same process and I see what happened. When I copied, it copied the track/bus automation but not the clip automation.  So I tried it again checking off the additional box for clip automation and it pasted perfectly.

So as I was explaining above I definitely copied and pasted. I've been working with Cakewalk since before it had audio capabilities and have a decent idea regarding duplication and bouncing. I'm not a professional but those are pretty basic things and were not needed at this point.

Thank you for your help Bill, I do appreciate it.

  19. Never experienced this before in Cakewalk. I copied 19 tracks (audio and midi) and pasted. When reviewing the pasted tracks (audio in this case) it's as though it processed the fx in my fx bin on the pasted tracks only. You can see in the attached pic the wav files on the right side have increased. 20211114_064140.thumb.jpg.ae1fd0a5a3464e3db9d0a72c930aaa3c.jpg I've pasted tracks like this before and this has never occurred. Anyone else experiencing this? Thx!
