  1. Is how I feel. On one hand there’s more peace and quiet due to the lack of a zillion deals waiting to be checked. On the other I’m often feeling I’m missing out on some incredibly worthwhile ones, never to see the light of day as the man isn’t here to find them. Don’t know what’s worse, though

  8. Yeah, Soniccouture Broken Wurli is pretty special. Have a look at the EP73 Deconstructed too.

  9. After checking reviews on YouTube anyway I think the SC Broken Wurli is best for me. I have the advantage of not having a particular sound in mind that I'm trying to achieve, but rather I'm just looking for what my ear likes the best and I like that fat grimy sound of broken wurli. I've seen some other folks heavily recommending the VReeds wurli by Acoustic Samples I think it is. I checked it out on Tube and it sounds good, but broken wurli is where it's in my case.

  13. I'm not into sound design (nor am I talking about a run of the mill type of piano this time). That's the reason I think many people buy synth after synth after synth; it's not that they don't have a dozen+ other synths and plugins that can do any given sound if they're willing to spend time sound designing it; it's that [some new synth here] already does that sound. Some people dig sitting there for hours and hours fiddling w/ sounds before they even get to the making music part, and maybe they never get there. But those people are invaluable because they make the sounds that people like me, who don't wanna fiddle all day, use to make music. I'm actually a guitar/bass player who just happens to mess with a daw and plugins. I'll buy a synth just for one sound it has, and I'll keep it around even if it doesn't have any other sounds I like in the whole instrument. Like w/ Shipwreck pianos, sure I can layer a string/choir sound over some piano I have but I didn't ask about that.

  14. Starship Krupa started two threads, one for freeware instruments and another for freeware FX. To be a resource to point folks to when they ask about that. It might be nice to have one for synth and effects devs, particularly the smaller, indy devs...

  15. Yeah I believe that new VReeds wurli is mostly modeled too. I think the library's whole footprint is just 70+ MB.
    2 points
  16. Agreed. Soniccouture's Broken Wurli is still my favorite and the most used of my Wurli collection. The tone is fantastic and the broken speaker knob (which is adjustable from none to a lot) adds a bit of a grungy vibe that can enhance the sense of realism. To my ears, this Wurli sounds very convincing as the real thing. Acoustic Samples' Wurli also has as a wonderful tone and is a very close second. The only downside of their Wurli is that there are no presets so that you have to dial in your sounds from scratch and then save them in a separate folder. I don't own Acoustic Samples' new VReeds, but I'm very intrigued. Lounge Lizard Wurli - While not quite as realistic sounding as some of the others, it does sound great in its own right. Because it is not sample based, it has a full 256 midi layers, so the dynamics are superior to any of the sampled Wurlis. The excellent dynamics make this a very fun instrument to play. It also has a very quick load time and small footprint. Neo Soul keys Wurli - I've never really connected with this one. It might be that the presets are more tailored for Neo Soul rather that Funk, Blues, and Rock. The samples are however spread out over a full 88 keys so you never run out of keys like on other sampled 64 key 200A Whurlitzers. Now that I have better options, I rarely use it. Scarbee 200A - At one time the undisputed king of the Wurli libraries, its tone still sounds great today. However when compared to newer Wurli libraries it's deficiencies become apparent. If you already own Komplete, this is still a decent option. When placed in the mix, you might be just fine with the results. Toontrack EZKeys Wurli - While it does in fact sound like a Wurli, when compared to any other library, it sounds pretty weak.

  17. I'd say the best alternative strategy is joining that Facebook group Larry and I are in. He reposted a lot of his deals from that group. But what he did better than anyone I know of was provide additional discount codes and sales from developers that don’t use affiliate marketing. However, that group and the music software deals site guy that post here doesn't share the codes or a lot of the deals from smaller devs because they're focused on making commissions off of your sale. They only show you deals where they get a kickback and exclude the codes and developers that don't give them a kickback.

  20. I'm not especially impressed with the IK pianos. I think they're good for what they are, but they don't hold up all that well compared to dedicated piano libraries IMO. I have a few cool/strange piano libraries, though, so here are some other options. Piano in Blue by Cinesamples: It's literally the Miles Davis Kind of Blue piano, complete with grime, tape noise etc, and it's *beautiful*. But it's no longer cheap. Simple Sam Signature Grand: As with Piano in Blue, it's a Steinway D, and it can be super vanilla/pretty sounding. But its presets are where it comes alive. The developers did a great job getting the recorded sound of some much loved pianists (e.g., Bill 50s/60s for Bill Evans; Tokyo for Keith Jarrett). Usually about $50. Ascend by Heavyocity: Another Steinway D but much more in the vein of Noire with all kinds of creative possibilities. Plenty of options for layering sounds (e.g., e-bow) and for 'moving'/evolving stuff similar to the particle engine. Woodchester by Fracture sounds: A felted upright with lots of cool swirly stuff. Really interesting sound to it. Memoir by Audio Ollie: Has the definite advantage of being free! It's sampled from a nice, thick-sounding old Mason & Hamlin grand. Very distinctive . The Oeser by Key instruments: A restored, old baby grand that has a whole bunch of the cool/strange stuff going on! VSL: If you're a student or educator with ID (doesn't have to be in music), VSL have their annual 40% off sale. Their German 1904 (a Bechstein) and the Bluthner are very characterful pianos, though more because the instruments they're sampled from are old rather than because they're really unusual instruments. Happy hunting!

  22. What he means is this: While Cakewalk is closed, either take the M1 VST .vst3 or .dll file out of its respective folder (or just uninstall the current version temporarily). Start Cakewalk, and do a plugin scan if you haven't got it set to auto. Load the crashing project, it'll complain that the synth is missing at this point but should still load. (If it still crashes, you may need to open it in Safe Mode by holding down SHIFT while loading the project and saying no to M1). Make a new MIDI track and call it something like M1 MIDI Temp (or anything you like, really). Copy all of the MIDI from the original M1 MIDI track to this new track. Delete the original M1 tracks (Synth track and MIDI track). This should remove M1 entirely from the project. Save the crashing project (I'd suggest doing it under a new name so you still have the original), repeat for each project that's doing this. Close Cakewalk. Put those files back in to where you moved them from in the first step, or reinstall M1 if you chose to do that instead. Open Cakewalk, do a plugin scan if you haven't got it set to auto, then load one of the re-saved projects you did just before. It shouldn't crash since you took out any reference to M1. Load in a new instance of M1, choose your patch, etc and copy the MIDI from that temp track you made into the new MIDI track that feeds the M1. The idea of this is that if it's only crashing on projects that were created with older versions of M1 but projects that used the new version are fine, this should theoretically work correctly once you save it. It is a real pain, and won't get your patches or any custom stuff back at all, but should solve the issue going forward with any future new version. And then you can choose if you want to freeze off tracks, etc after that. Not an ideal situation, so hopefully Korg comes to the party with a fix.

  25. If you're looking for a piano that is very different, and musically inspiring, let me suggest ArtVista's Malmsjo, a favorite of Hans Zimmer. I guess it was the first virtual "soft piano." But not with cloth or anything, the original piano just sounds that way. It's been around since Gigasampler. This is not a go-to everyday piano, but it is beautiful to play and it has inspired me to make music that works with that sound. It's one of my favorites--a classic VI. https://www.artvista.net/malmsjo.html It sells for $99, but you can pick it up for half that during holiday sales. I also like Art Vista's Virtual Grand 3 https://www.artvista.net/vgp3.html It is based on recordings of a 1960 Hamburg Steinway Model ”B.” The twist is that it offers stunningly realistic piano presets that emulate recordings from the 1950's through today by artists such as Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Norah Jones, Diana Krall, Donny Hathaway, Chet Baker, Jan Johansson, Ray Charles, John Lewis, Bobby Timmons, Billy Preston, Keith Jarrett, Jackson Browne, Leon Russell, John Legend, Arthur Rubinstein, and Bill Evans. I have a LOT of pianos (too many), but I end up using this one more than not. I guess with all the presets I can always find something that works for each piece.

  27. Did you overlook the other IK library "Fractured Piano", another of their Cinekinetik series? https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/stfracturedpiano/ "Fractured Piano offers a wild variety of altered keyboard sounds. Designed to stir emotion and build tension, the library features sci-fi, cosmic and eerie sounds, action-driven percussive sounds and acid keys, along with dystopian harpsichords and other imaginary or futuristic sounds. It includes 5.4 GB of sample content and 37 SampleTank 4 instrument presets perfect for anything from film scoring to modern pop music production or general funky vibes." "Most of the “Piano Howling” family of presets were created by actually screaming into the piano frame, and some were produced using other tricks. Cymbal Felts were used in different positions pushing and damping the short strings section before the hammers, to produce 4 different sounds (“oscillators” in the sound element) for the “Piano Felt Bass” and other presets using the piano sustain pedal."

  28. Okay, I downloaded the library and while I didn't like the sound of the ridiculous amount of reverb on the drums in the demo (trying to imitate the sound of Bonham playing with natural reverb in a room with stone), the drums, out of the box, sound very good and Bonham-ish. For a free library, I think this is excellent. I immediately started playing triplets, Bonham style after I heard it. Definitely a good one!

  29. Hello @Morten Saether or other Cakewalk by Bandlab workers involved in publishing the Cakewalk by Bandlab Reference Guide pdf file. Please add a current revision number or publishing date to the Reference Guide download link. Presently one must (1) download the file, (2) open the file in a pdf viewer and (3) find the revision code at the bottom of page 2 to discover when the downloaded file was last updated. Thank you in advance.

  31. Philip, no doubt it's because of your mixing abilities, but you have a fairly recent original instrumental song that you posted on SoundCloud where you told me you used that piano and it sounded great, better than I previously thought that piano sounded. Have you created your own presets? I think later I'll post a link to your song so others know what I'm talking about, because I have that piano, but you made it sound better than any of the presets. I thought you used a physical piano. I'd love to know what you did (e.g. a custom preset, reverb, etc), beyond wrote a really lovely song!

  32. (OFF TOPIC) This album gets a bad rap, and justifiably so. However, buried beneath the piss-poor production and the appalling Bernie Rhodes-inspired drum machine percussion, their are some decent tunes in there. If you haven't come across them before, a lot of the tracks on the album have been sort of re-recorded with 'real' drums added, and the difference is chalk and cheese. Here's four great examples of the 'rebooted' tracks:

  42. A new issue has recently cropped up in Windows Defender (anti-virus) for Win 11 and I believe Win 10. Defender's "Memory Integrity" function has been updated and is now flagging some drivers ".inf" files as security risk and the memory integrity function cannot be turned on until the flagged drivers (and/or .sys) are removed. My list included some drivers no longer needed and they were deleted. However, I still have a fully functional Frontier Tranzport (wireless DAW controller) and the drivers for this are on my list. Frontier is gone so no new "secure" drivers will ever be issued. Thus the Defender memory integrity will never get enabled. Maybe a 3rd party AV is an option, but I've had some DAW problems back in Win 7 times with 3rd party AV's (tried several). For others, if you run across this you will be faced with doing away with DAW hardware (or software) or keeping them and not being able to enable memory integrity.

For RPN/NRPN/CC/etc. , find some source for reading about MIDI messages. "MIDI 1.0" standard from what I remember is not free and midi.org web site is getting worse and worse with time...
