  1. We can agree to disagree, Larry, you clearly have had some less than affectionate words for a lot of developers like your epic battle with IK. I look at developers from two perspectives. As a customer and as a marketing and branding strategist (I've consulted to around two dozen of them in this industry). There are a number of strategies Toontrack has taken over the past decade I would classify as customer unfriendly, but specifically, in this instance, I'm thinking of their practice of as you (Larry) put it, shutting the door on upgrade pricing for past customers. That is antithetical to being customer loyal. Software developers in this industry commonly have an upgrade path for customers of their major product lines when introducing a new version of their product and don't put tight time restrictions on it. They can easily state that the are no longer supporting a previous iteration of the product and still continue upgrade pricing. And yes, when there is an extended amount of time -- say a decade -- sure, you can see upgrade pricing is no longer offered. So why do companies time limit upgrades? There's only one reason. To drive revenue more quickly, to force the hand of past customers to make a purchase that meets the brand's timeline. There's no mystery behind. They're forcing customers to pay on their timeline, not the customer's timeline or financial consideration. And again, if that timeline can span a decade, of course, a software developer needs to put limits, but not the kind of limits Toontrack engages in. That's hyper-aggressive and very customer unfriendly. I bought SD2 and don't qualify for upgrade pricing to SD3, so I'd have to shell out the same as a brand new customer, $400 USD or more. Far more than their competitors' offerings. Larry, while you hold XLN in utter contempt for not having a new version of AD2 -- and I empathize with the desire for them to introduce a new version of the product; XLN is an extremely customer-focused brand -- they have been excellent at maintaining/updating AD2 at no cost to customers. I bought AD2 several years ago as an upgrade when it was first tolled out. I've used AD2 on three different PCs with three different versions of Windows and it performed flawlessly on each. That, IMO, is not abandonware, as you regularly label it. Abandonware isn't software that is well maintained, regularly updated and supported by a developer. It's just a product that hasn't seen innovation in a very long time. And looking at what XLN can do with XO, I think they have the ability to make some real improvements to AD2. I'm not sure why they don't. I would imagine that it has been their biggest selling product line, so you would expect that they would keep actively developing it, not just maintain it, which doesn't bring in revenue. So, I really don't know what's up with XLN and their AD2 line. I would expect that AD3 would have to be rolled out within the next year. But it's been a lot of years. If they didn't maintain the product so well, I think you could call it abandonware, but again, it's a well maintained and supported product. The thing is, it's just been a long time since they've introduced a new version -- which many software companies do just for revenue's sake. So, I would at least give them credit for that.

  2. We actually have a couple of bass solos. Well, not technically "solos" but bass + drum + everybody picks up a tambourine or shaker breaks. All but one potential bassist candidate jumped right in and produced energetic, if musically-disjointed thunder. The fellow that we ultimately chose did not do this. We had to explain the concept to him, as no one had ever asked him to be center stage before. Once we'd convinced him we were serious, he went home and worked up a great solo, a dynamic mini composition with a beginning, middle and end. How refreshing. The singer turned to me to gauge my response, but my head was back and my eyes were closed and I didn't notice her. Later, she said "all the pieces are in place now". I agreed.

  3. Sounds a bit lacking in ambition to me. 15% has been done many times before. 50% would probably ensure some kind of legendary status. Aim high T&S, nobody ever remembers the guy who just repeated something.

  16. Banner80 USER SAY They are basically abandonware since 2015-17. Many known bugs will simply not go addressed and there's not going to be much support. I used to recommend the SSL strip, but I stopped using it because the bugs got to me and I find the thing too unreliable to use for serious work. It works most of the time, but even if it fails only 1 out of 10 times, why expose myself and my sessions to that risk level. Some of the bugs are hard to detect. For instance, one that made me lose confidence was a weird behavior in the SSL bus comp. Sometimes it would act/sound jittery out of nowhere, and you might miss spotting it in the song if you use it on an individual track or subgroup. So then I decided I'm not touching that comp again. So then why bother with the strip at all. Sad really, because otherwise it's a great strip if it worked as intended. Having said all of that, the huge bundle for $50 is a fantastic deal, for the plugins that are not buggy and for as long as the thing continues to work under new OS releases. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Absolutely save your money for another deal. These are total junk. Most of these plugin are 10+ years old, and they weren't even particularly good back then. (I had the "integral bundle" back in like 2007, and I have yet to experience worse buyer's remorse.)

  18. Funny how people say that some software is "unintuitive" implying that there is something wrong with it, and not considering that maybe what is not too sharp might be their own "intuition". 🙄

  23. I am a Hornet fanboy, but this version is disappointing. I am sure it is really hard (I would say impossible) to get real time chord analysis right. The MIDI output just doesn't look useable in my testing. It is good at what it did in previous versions as far as making a guess at the key (and BPM as long as there is no syncopation). I only looked at audio analysis, not the MIDI input capability. Zplane deCoda is still my tool for audio chord analysis, but of course it is much more expensive. I don't think sales apply to upgrades, but if you are a new user, wait for the Hornet monthly discounts.

  24. I have no doubt there is truth to that but the price tag!!!! It better be stomping on AD2 for what it cost. The great thing about AD2 is that you get quite a bit for what you pay. I have just about every drum program out there except SD2 and I still use AD2 in my rotation.

  26. Thanks for the voucher @Time+Space. I remember there have been some other store-wide discounts in the past, but none that I can remember during a (very) sales-heavy season where many products are already discounted.

  29. This is a much better deal than Transgressor. Boz's transient shaper does some very cool things, but I agree with Brian's assessment that it's too fiddly. Plus I've heard it insert some very ugly artifacts, so it's been relegated to the reserve team. I have at least a dozen transient shapers in my kit, and all of them are fiddly. I rarely use them anymore. When I do feel the need for one, it's usually the one from Meldaproduction. It's currently $36. No authorization hoops to jump through (no "installation manager" downloader required).

  30. Buss Gain are set different than Tracks. The unity is at 3 o'clock instead of 12 o'clock, Why? I guess because you don't normally need that +18 db of headroom that a track has on a buss because it is being fed by a track that should be in the ballpark and not that far out. You'll notice track gain is either + or - 18db. The Buss gain is from - inf to + 6.

  33. Thanks! Now I ran the XLN Online Installer and sure enough, I got a new version of Addictive Keys. Version 1.5.0 build 211115 was installed (so compiled only five days ago). And sure enough, in this version AK is scalable! So much for "abandonware".

  38. I have AD2 and use it a lot, but I am a former semi-pro drummer who is super picky about sampled drums and I greatly prefer Superior Drummer over AD2 or BFD3 (which I don't own, I'm just going off demos and the UI). However, I'm still using SD2 and a bunch of expansions , which I love and still runs great on my Windows 10 PC. But Toontrack pulled upgrade pricing for SD3 long ago and a full version is $400 USD -- even $300 for ezDrummer 2 owners -- which is not me -- is pretty steep. I've consulted to a couple of dozen plugin and sample developers over the years, and I find Toontrack is one of the least customer loyal plugin developers in this business today. Yes, AD2 definitely doesn't sound as good to my ears and it's not as feature packed as SD3, but XLN is a much more customer-focused company. I really dislike some of the customer unfriendly practices I've seen Toontrack engage in over the years.

  44. About a year ago now I think, I bought a bundle deal of theirs on sale. I already owned one of the plugins and I automatically got a discount for it when I bought the bundle. I would assume it applies to all their bundles but I don't know for sure. I ended up getting a lot of software for under $10 if I remember correctly. The thread is around here somewhere. And ya know, I couldn't tell you what I bought if my life depended on it. I remember the deal and the fact I already owned their autodynamic EQ and got a huge discount for already having it, but that's all I remember about it. I know for a fact I've never used what I bought because I have a favorites list in Studio One and I just drag what I need from there from the Browser and there's nothing new there. I'm not sure how the deals are going to go this year. Everyone is hurting bad. I don't think they can afford to give away too much.
