  5. This is an interesting model for independent developers. Download for free, contribute monthly if you can and want. Now I'm remembering Airwindows started doing that a while back. There's this idea that you only need 1,000 fans to support you. It looks like Analog Obsession found a way to make it work. Good for them.

  9. He makes some really nice looking stuff. I haven't used or downloaded any of the Analog Obsession stuff since the whole "virus thing" a while back. (search the forum) FWIW, I ran the 3 "FET" .Zip files above through: Virus Total: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/ Dr. Web: https://vms.drweb.com/scan_file/ They were clean as a whistle. So hopefully he's got those issues all worked out, because he sure seems like a hard working dev and is continually putting out some interesting and nice looking stuff. I'm definitely going to try these out!

  16. I cross graded to get Nuendo (instead of upgrading and losing my Cubase license). In hindsight it was a dumb move. Nuendo is Cubase + extra video/film and game features. The only difference is Cubase seems to get earlier 0.5 updates but Nuendo catches up pretty quickly. They do seem to be trying to keep them in sync more than they have in the past. As for support, I'd imagine Nuendo support is slightly better, but I've yet to see it in practice. All things considered though, I've stopped updating my Cubase license. If selling it wasn't such a pain, I'd most likely just sell it off. If you are only doing music/audio then Cubase is awesome, you don't need Nuendo. But if you are doing anything with video/film/games getting Nuendo instead of Cubase may be a good idea. Though to be honest I think I could easily live with just Cubase even for film/video/game work. That said, lately with Cakewalk adding expression maps I've kind of stopped using Nuendo and went back to Cakewalk. Cakewalk's video support is pretty weak though, but I understand it and can live with it. Not like I'm outputting video with any of these apps really.

  18. And this is why it's so important for plugin developers to sign their binaries. Certificates cost money though, and so for a smaller dev, I can understand why they might not do so. However, there are some larger devs out there that I'm fairly sure could easily afford a certificate, but still won't sign their binaries for some reason.

  19. I've opened somewhere between 0 and 1 tickets with Steinberg so take this guy's word over mine. My view is based on the impression I've gotten from browsing the web. For example, the word has it that Cubase users had been requesting Steinberg to return support for Houston controller to Cubase 11 for months, to no avail. When Nuendo 11 landed it took one thread with a few people asking for the same thing (that's what it looks like anyway), and soon it was promised to be added back in the next update (and it was). https://forums.steinberg.net/t/nuendo-11-available-now-the-gold-standard-for-professional-audio/589132/43 Getting through to someone who listens might be a gamble. I've dealt with companies before whose first-line custom support makes you want to set them on fire, but if you can make your way through The Idiot Firewall, you get to talk to someone who actually has a brain and wants to solve your problem.

  20. As has been stated already Cubase = Music Production Nuendo = Film/Post Production Samplitude = Music Production Sequoia = Film/Post Production Pro Tools = Music Production Media Composer = Film/Post Production It's a common theme, and scheme, among the "heavy players"... The bottom line is that the latter of each is "more expensive" due to their ability to "do more" for the intended market. So, if your sole intent is "producing music" then Cubase, Samplitude, Pro Tools, etc..would be all you need. However, if you intend on doing "Film Scoring/Post Production" work, then Nuendo, Sequoia, Media Composer is the vehicle those who do such work prefer to "ride in".... Can you do that in the others? YES - but with limited functionality in that regards, but that's really not what they are intended for.

  21. After spending way too much time reading this thread, it looks like AO's website got hacked in Feb 2020 and the hackers inserted malicious code on the 32-bit versions. I suppose one advantage of using Patreon is that they have more secure infrastructure (at least more than what an independent developer can afford).

  24. Midi tracks are displayed so you can use the console GUI to read and write automation - just like Audio tracks. The need for many is pretty basic - but I agree that it would be a good option for the case with multiple synth instrument outputs. I use Battery which - when inserted adds 16 stereo outputs plus auxs. It's just a lot of clutter when I use maybe 5-6 of the outputs - as with Kontakt and multiple outputs when I want to use a just a single stereo output. This is dictated by the synth and not Cakewalk.

  32. There have been "kids these days" gripes as long as there have been kids. I can imagine Adam and Eve's children saying to their kids "whaddaya mean you're sick of apples, do you know the sacrifices your grandma and grandpa went through so that you could eat them? You don't like your loincloths? When I was your age I had nothing but a fig leaf to cover my junk." I remember people my parents' age scoffing at plastic model airplane kits that you could put together and paint in a matter of days. "I made my models out of balsa wood and it would take a month! Can you believe the short attention span of this generation raised on TV?" Then snap together plastic models came along and people scoffed at those for offering even faster results. One of the reasons that younger people might turn away from something that doesn't yield quickly gratifying results, and I'll take your example of the airbrush, a tool that I own and have used exactly once, to paint a gold Duco stripe on a vintage WFL snare I was restoring. For illustrations even I wouldn't try an airbrush. I only want the thing so that I can paint on objects. For anything else, I have Paint.NET and GIMP and Photoshop. They yield faster results and are way more forgiving of mistakes. The modern tools we are blessed with do yield quick results. A hand plane looks cool but there are multiple power tools I'd reach for first. I'm 60, and I recognize the tendency in myself to walk away from things that I'm not immediately good at. I have to force myself to power through when that happens, slog my way through tutorials, etc. My preferred way to learn is to start with a simple task I can apply the tool to and jump right in. Not everything lends itself to this approach. I've worked around it in different ways including deliberately choosing things that initially seem unfathomable and going nose-to-grindstone until I nail them. That goes opposite to my nature. And really, sometimes I find things that click right away, and that's how I find out things that I have an aptitude for. Your friend's kid will figure out eventually that to get really good at something takes time. Maybe airbrushing looks cool so he wanted to try it, but then realized that it's one of those things that will take a long time to master, and doesn't feel a pressing need to do any airbrushing. To anyone who thinks that "kids today" lack patience for mastering things, I suggest trying to play one of their favorite video games with them. 😄

  33. I can imagine some of my posts are provocative as well, but really when I say "Maybe it's time to look in the mirror," it doesn't mean I'm holier than thou, and it may not even necessarily mean I think the fault can be found in the mirror, just that it's worth looking. When the discussion goes in these directions it's best to remind oneself that at core we're collaboratively trying to figure things out, and engaging is desirable only if in the end you're prepared to have a laugh at yourself. 🌦️

  35. In the first image, 1 = Audio Track 2 = 3 = Instrument track 4 = MIDI track. Only track 4 does not give audio out. So, we don't need to see it in the console view. But on unchecking MIDI from the strips, the instrument tracks also disappear. It actually looks like MIDI and instrument tracks are treated as the same thing. Please fix this.

  37. I agree those are excellent suggestions, and I get a better idea of where you're going with this. But, I have a more universal suggestion: the industry should not abandon ReWire, but enhance it. I use Studio One, Cakewalk, and Ableton Live on a regular basis. Each has functionalities the others don't. I don't have time to wait forever for every DAW to implement every other DAW's functionality, so I have to use the right tool for the right job based on what's available now. Studio One does a great job of integrating samples and slices into instruments like Impact XT and Sample One. But, there's nothing like Ableton Live's Session View. So, I ReWire Ableton Live into Studio One - done. Cakewalk doesn't do notation. So I ReWire Notion into Cakewalk. When Sonar had no significant suite of virtual instruments, I ReWired Reason into it. The problem is that most DAWs, with the notable exception of Live, FL Studio, and Acid Pro, are only ReWire hosts. That's what I mean by enhancements. If all DAWs could be ReWire hosts or clients, we probably wouldn't even be having this discussion. For example, I find Cakewalk's mixing environment very comfortable. It would be great if any DAW could be a client for it. When I need to mix a Pro Tools session, I usually export the tracks, and import them into Cakewalk to do the mix. Yeah, it would be nice to avoid that step - which would be possible, if Pro Tools could be a ReWire client. But, it looks like this will never happen, because Propellerheads is dropping ReWire support, no one else seems to be taking up the slack (I asked Steinberg because they were involved in the original development, but never got an answer back), and it's not being made open source. Although ReWire still works with Windows, even when it's not officially supported, ReWire is now officially dead on computers with Apple silicon because there will supposedly never be an Apple silicon-compatible library. So, we'll continue to have DAWs that live in the worlds they do best, not play nice with each other, have people in forums beg for features other DAWs have and be frustrated, and need to import/export tracks & stems to take advantage of features unique to specific DAWs. The industry doesn't realize that this kind of a move would grow the size of the market, because people would invest in more than one DAW, so that they could easily do what they want to do. And the creative options that open up by treating DAWs as modules instead of one-size-fits-all solutions are off the hook. /rant

  44. Summing is the "way" that all the Channel Strips on the Console are "combined" down to the Master Channel, and how that summing effects the overall "sound" of what's being mixed. A Typical Studio Analog Desk has "Analog Summing", and this effects the Mix Sound. The SSL E Boards have been used on countless hits, as have the Neve N, the SSL G, and the SSL J, as well as the API and the Harrison. They each do "their thing" in Analog, and the Plugins do their best to emulate that "Sonic Characteristic of the Analog Board"

  45. I like Waves plugins. A lot of them are my "first reach for". I just recently updated all my Waves to v12 through everyplugin.com. I have no issue with how they handle their program. They still have some of the best and easiest UI (even the old ones) I have. But I do have an issue with Pace. And as much as I like my Waves plugins, if they went to iLock, I would drop 'em in a NYS!! (New York second!)
