  4. Concur with bitflipper on Melodyne, but I don’t feel silly about holding out for a sale at all. It’s not just Melodyne. When you consider the number of companies these days expecting substantial bucks for really minimal changes to their products, it really adds up. PS: My view may be substantially affected, of course, by the fact that I do love sushi.😁

  5. all of these are 50% off direct from SB https://new.steinberg.net/promotion/groove-agent-expansion-sale/ FWIW I have a few of these, the Simon Phillips ones etc - save your money and put them towards SD3 or one of the recent expansions. In a different league.

  10. If history repeats, there will be last-chance offers to us holdouts before the year's out. My last three Melodyne upgrades happened that way, even though the discounts have gotten progressively stingier over the years ($59 to $79 to $99). I feel a little silly postponing the update over a mere fifty bucks' difference, but version 4 does everything I need and there isn't anything in version 5 that screams must-have-now. The de-esser, I guess. It's supposed to be more transparent, but after ten years of practice I've become fairly proficient at pulling off invisible edits.

  14. ...Yes, those articles, although a little old, do help refresh my memory on using ReWire. I had gotten Sibelius to work with ReWire/Cakewalk in the past and could not now figure out why it no longer worked. One important thing to remember, and what caught me off guard this time, is that you must untick the setting in Preferences/Audio/Playback and Recording that is called "Suspend Audio Engine When Cakewalk Is Not in Focus" This is a newly worded setting that used to be "Share Drivers with Other Programs" and is still mentioned as such in the CW Knowledge Base article for setting up ReWire. I had been looking for what I remembered as the "Share drivers..." version of the setting and took me a bit to figure out (because I kept overlooking it) that "Suspend Audio..." is just another way of saying the same thing. Anyway, that is what did it for me! I am recording this here in case anyone else stumbles on this thread looking to get ReWire working. This combined with using loopMIDI virtual cables really ups the game for me. Sibelius can then be used as the "Staff view"/Notation page where I can compose in my preferred Sibelius which then drives those MIDI notes into CW where I then assign the sounds and can have MIDI changes and automation and such controlled in the familiar way within CW. The best of both worlds!

  26. Not to rain on this deal, but Bela D Media vocal libraries are always 50% off on their site 😃 That said, as many of you know, I did a video on SORA and am a huge fan of the company. The second installment in their Native Voice series after Sora, Maya, is coming out soon, as per their Twitter feed. I expect larger discounts come BF.... And if you all are nice, maybe Dawn from Bela D will pay this forum another visit...

  29. In general I agree with you, however, in the case of CbB it is more nuanced. Many users have paid a lot for Sonar, which was rated among the very best of professional DAWs in several reviews (and of course less good in some other reviews, like is the case for other DAWs. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"😉), because it was a DAW answering to their high requirements. Since becoming CbB the DAW has quickly gained more options, has gotten a better workflow and has become more stable. Many of the old Sonar users that fit the profile of your description of current customers of high priced DAWs like Cubase (which are supposed to have higher requirements because they paid a lot for it), keep using CbB. I don't think that their requirements have become less just because the once expensive DAW has become free. Fact that they keep using it says a lot about the professional level of CbB. Since everyone can report bugs, complain on the forum or ask questions about anything I don't see why there would be less complaints because CbB is free. With any bug or problem it just makes sense to report it or ask how to get around it on the forum (asking is also free and the high quality of the CbB forum regularly attracts users of other DAWs for specific questions because it is well regarded compared to forums of expensive DAWs). So why would there be less complaints because it is free... You gave me the impression ("Free things usually garner few complaints", etc.) that in expensive DAWs more bugs are ironed out. My bad if misinterpreted your comments. The bugs in free are more acceptable in general, but not if you paid a lot for the DAW like Sonar users that continue to use CbB. And don't forget that there are several professional musicians and studios here on the forum. They can't afford to keep using a DAW that hampers their production... There are several users on the forum that use CbB next to other expensive DAWs. They prefer some things in one DAW and other things in another. I guess if you have Pro Tools, Cubase and are using CbB regularly or (as I understood form several most of the time) next to it it must be of comparable quality See here above. Most Sonar oldies would leave if CbB if it were not up to the task. And people spend many hours to produce a piece of music that they are emotionally attached to. Nothing is more discouraging and frustrating than to see it fall apart because of time consuming bugs along the way or a crash just before finishing the master. Because of that I think that especially with something like a DAW most users will not stick to it if it does not operate well, even when being free You mis the point: I merely pointed out that since CbB is free, the DAW is even much better and better maintained and upgraded than it was at the time of being an expensive DAW, that paying a lot for a DAW can still lead to failure and that (at least in my case) this free DAW is much better than the paid ones in the past. And yes, I'm very critical regarding workflow, options, bugs etc. just like I was when I paid top dollar. If the DAW doesn't fits my needs, I'll leave it for another (paid or free, I don't care as long as it can do what I need it to do) Or maybe they complain more, because they have more problems. Anyway, it is impossible to compare that. I think that the tone on the Sonar and CbB forum is was and is much more positive than usually found on other forums. People treat each other with respect and are very helpful. That might also explain the difference (and language) in forum topics🧐 You miss the point that Bandlab invests a lot continuously. Talking about ROI I assume a corporate point of view, not consumer. I assume you refer to this review Admiral Bumblebee Cakewalk review which is two years old...He doesn't include CbB in his current DAW comparison charts. Many of the issues have been improved since. Anyway, a good list of topics for the bakers to check what still could be improved from that list! Thanks, by the way, for that website! I like the in depth articles😃

  33. Before you start using something as complicated as the GoXLR, start off with the basics of Cakewalk. In Preferences change Audio - Devices to your speakers. The PC's speakers. Start a new project. Insert the SI-Piano. In the dialog select MIDI Source and also First Synth Audio Output. Select the MIDI track that was inserted. It is the bottom one (never mind the name): Use Views -> Piano Roll View or the keyboard shortcut Alt-3. At the top switch from Smart to Draw. Click around in the PRV to get something like this: Press Play. You should hear the notes. Repeat for the Synthmaster. Except this time select the Synthmaster MIDI track and enter notes there. Press Play. You should hear both piano and Synthmaster. Will probably sound awful, but no matter. Repeat for the 1984 Piano. When you have success with this, come back and we can start getting it to work with the mixing desk.

  39. It's a very good composition, I would have remarked that it's themes have a kind of stately, formal, reverent quality . . . but knowing that you wrote it in honor of your father, that totally makes sense. Well done. Mixwise, you might look at the snare tippy taps, it's a great part for this song! but are mixed too low? they should come up about 2 db and join the party! Overall mix seems a bit tilted towards the low end. Occasional strings up top but I think the whole mix could be brightened. One trouble spot down low might be the deeper bass noted of piano (which I like) but you might sacrifice some low or low mids from the piano, to achieve a better clarity overall. Lastly, I'd call out the piano itself. What did you use? And in the mix, it seems the reverb or decay on that piano is a lot shorter than the other instruments in the room? If you are envisioning the piece as something live on an entire soundstage, you might lengthen the decay of the piano somehow. If that doesn't matter, then all is good. Kudos on a great, respectful, thoughtful piece of music! cheers, -Tom
