  7. Thanks Abacab, yes, the standard version misses out a lot of what you really need in the RAW conversion engine but that sounds fine. Just deciding whether I want to go for the Painter as well. My drawing skills are pretty bad, I've always wanted to improve my drawing for some of the stuff I do especially cartoon type characters, but thought it was a skill beyond me. I just quickly did this guys seminar though and was quite surprised how quick it came together to do something simple. Being able to draw can have all sorts of benefits for designing your own website graphics, CD covers/on-line product boxes, film storyboards (mine are terrible!) etc There are plenty of great videos on youtube and after a bit of research, I discovered there are group drawing classes at a local community center and art class for just $3.00 - $12.00 for 1hr. Could be a great skill for anyone to add for a little dosh and a bit of practice.

  9. A little more testing with Entire Mix. My first test just checked the file format. Subsequent tests put audio on the tracks. Entire Mix relies on hardware mains so in order to create six channels of audio requires six hardware outputs. I ended up using 6 ADAT channels on the Babyface. I have nothing connected to the interface ADAT ports.

  10. OK, I just ran a test. Export using the Bus failed so I switch to Entire Mix. Going to write a bug report on this. All data was routed through a surround bus configured for 5.1 (film/alternative) in surround preferences Pulled the wav into SoundForge to confirm it was a 6 channel wav. I use an RME Babyface Pro as my interface.

  11. To be clear, while UVI does say this deal includes two free expansions, in fact the deal is better than that--you get 100 euros to spend any way you want in the UVI store, and you have a little time to do it. In my case, I bought Falcon during this sale last year in October and then waited until the 30% UVI Store-wide sale during Black Friday to spend my 100 euros. By waiting I got FOUR expansions for an addional 9 euros. 39x4=156 156x70%= 109. You could also spend your100 euros on anything in the UVI store, but accumulating expansions really takes Falcon to another level. There are regular half price expansion sales that will help you add to your collection. This deal is offered every year, only at this time. So if you want the best price on Falcon, the time is now. But if you aren't sure, you probably can wait for it to come around again. I let this deal go by for years. I'm very happy I finally jumped on it last year. To be honest, Falcon scared me, like it would take me a century to learn. I think all the extensive documentation on the site backfired for me. The truth is that if you know a thing or two about synths, it's not hard at all. It's just sound sources, LFOs, filters, effects, arps and sequencers, etc. You know all that stuff. The difference is that Falcon has so many choices. The other thing is that you can click on practically any mod source and it will become a button or a switch on the front interface. One click. A very nice feature. And if you make a preset you like, you can drag and drop a picture in as a new front page. Very cool if you use a free source like Unsplash or Pixabay. There are also some odd drum sequencers that you won't find most other places. Also, they did a lot of updates between the original Falcon and Falcon 2.0. The kind of updates that other companies charge you for. So this is an excellent investment as we are only on Falcon 2.1. On the negative side, I have found it to be a resource hog. You should be able to load up a lot of layers, but I haven't been able to do that on my computer. It's main competition is HALion. I prefer Falcon to HALion, but HALion is less of a resource hog, so it's easier to load up a lot of layers. I'm going to buy another 32GB of memory this season, so I will see if that makes a difference. And @Fleer Unify is so light that it will definitely be a better way to layer up a lot of sounds.

  23. As far as I know, the brush packs only work in Painter and Painter ParticleShop, and they are additions to the factory brushes. These applications are bitmap editors, and the brushes let you paint pen and brush strokes and effects on bitmaps. [Edit] Since ParticleShop can also be a plug-in to other graphics apps, this is an update to correct some information previously posted. This text appears in the ParticleShop help file:

  25. On Kontakt Hub there was a dropdown menu at the top that allowed you to search by developer or instrument. And it worked well. A lot of sites have the same thing but don't work as well. For example, in the APD store it is very fiddly to get it to let you select a developer. Sometimes you don't remember the name, like "Abstrung." Or you don't even know "Audiofier," but you can pick it out of a list. I hope that this feature comes back. It's in this sense that I think Loot Audio is harder to search. Is it in there somewhere and I just missed it? I also find it less intuitive and harder to just browse around without knowing what you're looking for, but I guess I'll get used to it. Browsing around aimlessly is how I put together my "Tiger the Frog" holiday post on VI:Control and I think it's going to be much harder this year. But I'll deal.

  35. The lower the latency (smaller the buffer size), the greater the advantage of the 10900k's significantly higher clock-speed. The higher the buffer size (higher the latency), the greater the advantage of the 3970x's many additional cores. I don't consider 512-sample buffer size to be small. I wouldn't work at anything higher than 256-samples. Most times, I'm working at 32/64/128-sample ASIO buffer size. Insert a single instance of Helix Native... running with Presonus Quantum set to 96k using a 32-sample ASIO buffer size. That's running at 1ms total round-trip latency. An extreme example... AMD 3950x and 3970x - audio will glitch Intel 10900k - no audio glitches If I'm paying $2000 for a CPU, I want it to excel at ultra low latency performance. 10900k is about 1/3 the cost of the 3970x... and offers a great balance of features: 5.3GHz all-core clock-speed Runs quiet with large/quality air-cooking 10 cores/20 processing threads TDP = 125w There's no such thing as a quiet 3970x machine (TDP = 280w)... unless you allow it to thermal-throttle (which negates the purpose)

  36. I first notice a slight tremor in the back of my neck when I lay back on the sofa. That was about 10 years ago. As each year goes by it has increased in intensity but hasn't effected anything I'm doing. From what I've been told is it's an aging thing and common unless more extreme. Mine, knock on wood, is not.

  41. What was really cool was that we rarely talked about anything to do with music! (And NOTHING about guitar playing!) It was weird because the band I was in had recently opened for Blue Oyster Cult and our lead guitarist was a huge Eddie fan (who later went to play in his Godfather's band, Dio). Eddie never knew I could even spell "guitar" let alone attempt to play one... Whenever Valerie was back in New York, he'd pull up in his white Lambo (which was even nicer than my poser sports car - lol), then his two bodyguards would pull up in a sedan behind him. Since I was going out with one of the waitresses and not pestering him for an autograph or anything like that, I was "safe" and we'd sit up at the bar and his bodyguards would stand behind us. I have a lot of family in Michigan on my Mom's side with the last name of Van Heulen (she's 100% Dutch - my maternal grandparents immigrated from the Netherlands). So we ended up talking a lot about that and golfing. The only music-related stuff I remember talking with him about was about him playing piano! We hung out four or five times but, during the last one, David Lee Roth showed up basically acting like a big tool, then made is way into the DJ booth where he proceeded to yell out over the dance floor "Hey Ladies! Start deciding which of you will be going home with me tonight!!!" As soon as he showed up Eddie looked very disappointed (perhaps a big clue that things were not going smooth between them - something confirmed when they replaced him with Sammy!). After Dave made his "announcement," Eddie said he didn't want to "stick around for the childishness" (or something similar). I never saw him there after that...

  44. rbowser had a nice generic walk-through from 2006 that is still applicable. The comment about reverb giving the perception of far away is valid. How he talks of setup is good, especially for beginners (with sends/busses). No real "rule of thumb" with that part. He hints at using other reverbs (on other reverb busses), but doesn't go into that detail. Being sparing in reverb usage is a good guide (depending on genre). Comments like "dial up till you can barely notice it, then back it off" is often good advice for anything front and center. Other than that, no real "rules," but be mindful that reverb is like a "frequency smear." If you go overboard, you will often negate any EQ you took the time to do prior (i.e., the mud). For this reason, any time-based FX should be last in the signal chain in most instances.

  45. The velocity is not quite the same as volume. If you make the velocity of a note very small, like 8-10, does it sound different or quieter? The velocity not only can affect volume but also the timbre of the note. Are you trying to make it quieter or just not hearing a difference of any kind when changing the velocity of a note?

  49. Well, it's not an earth shattering improvement having articulation mapping . . . because it seems you still have to program it . . . it just makes it more user friendly to program it, which is what a lot of the more recent Cakewalk improvements are all about. Maybe I'll like it more after it saves me some programming time ?
