  3. We're not hiding anything. BandLab acquired the intellectual rights for Cakewalk properties, and chooses to provide it free to users. It's the same core application that was being sold as SONAR Platinum previously, no nefarious changes, just continued active development. Just because an application is free does not mean it has to be open source. We put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into the application, and that has value, whether the app is being sold or not.

  4. Just my personal take on this.... but I think its also worth noting that BandLab is a Singapore based company. It's very common for US companies (and a lot of UK/EU companies, although to a lesser extent) to insist that every product or project team is financially sustainable. My previous gig ( a US company) insisted that every product had to make at least $1M per developer working on it... so if it made less than that, either the team would be cut or the product canned. The main problem with this approach, is that some products are actually worth having even if they lose money as they act as advertisement, industry prestige, or an entry point to other more profitable products. In a similar vein, I'm sure many of us have worked for companies who have clients that use up so much of the company's resources, you wonder how they can make any money from them... but the point is, having that client attracts other more profitable ones. Those high profile but unprofitable products or clients may not make you money, but they do add value to the brand... which in turn makes money. BandLab has a family of brands comprising of software (offline & online), audio interfaces, guitar pedals, guitars, a huge music retail chain and some big names in publishing. The brands that make money pay for the ones that don't. Having a fully featured professional DAW such as Cakewalk as part of its portfolio not only adds value to the BandLab brand, it also provides a stepping stone for BandLab's online DAW users to move on to the next step. Personally I see it as no different from what a lot of us hobbyists or semi-pros do... I mean we may do paid music work, but I'll bet a lot of us spend more on gear than we earn from it. So how can we continue? Well, the day job subsidises it.

  5. That riff you played last night was pretty killing so don't sell yourself short 😛 Seriously all of us here have better things to do with our lives than steal somebody's personal information. We wouldn't be doing this if we didn't care about developing top notch software for people to make music. I think that would be a fair thing to say about most companies building music software. While it might be hard to imagine how this software could be free, its a testament that good things can happen once in a while. Life is too short to mistrust everything.

  6. They have two other freebies as well. Quiet Piano VST, effected piano presets, and Rain Maker, mixable rain and thunder sounds. Simple, but might be useful, if one hasn't many libraries and processors. Or inspirational.

  7. Yup, 2020. Data transfer is cheap and there are options they could use to distribute the content completely free if they really wanted but they choose not. Hell, they could add a download limit but the timed download thing is completely anti-consumer BS.

  10. from 4.1.2 to 4.1.3 What’s new in SampleTank 4.1.3: -Fixed a crash on launch on latest Windows 10 versions -Fixed a bug regarding fonts not being properly loaded on Windows. Run the IK product manager to update - and if your system is anything like mine (and many many others) it will fail - so then find the downloaded file and unzip/run it manually as the Product Manager is broken... And, NO, this isn't the problem OR the solution - there is something else broken. https://www.ikmultimedia.com/faq/index.php?id=1304&bu=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuaWttdWx0aW1lZGlhLmNvbS9mYXEvaW5kZXgucGhw and asking users to turn of virus/malware protection for download folders seems a little crazy IMO - other software vendors can make this work just fine....mostly better ! it will also install the, now redundant, authorization manager because it's important that IK install as much junk on your computer as possible /RANTOFF

  14. Okay, Adam, I just looked over your posts in this forum and 10 days ago you had to have someone tell you how to download the Theme Editor. Sorry, but you're not allowed to get this good in a week. I've been at this for over a year and a half and my buttons still look like someone ran over a jelly donut with their skateboard. I think we have a Lord of the Sth here.... It's people like you who make it so that I'll probably never "release" a complete, finished theme of my own. By the time I'm 3/4 done slogging my way through it, one of you Sth Lords will drop a group of 3, one of which will be very close to the one I've been working on, except yours will have a custom graticule for the Quadcurve EQ or something.

  18. Bandlab owns the software known as Cakewalk formally known as Sonar. They have every right to offer it in anyway they want. For those that have had Sonar from its very beginning Bandlab came to our rescue when Cakewalk the company was shut down. We are grateful to Bandlab for keeping it alive and thriving. For anyone to demand Bandlab give the code to the world with out buying it as Bandlab did seems to me too presumptuous to be believed. I can't see any benefit to Bandlab or to the user base. Nor can I see any reason this would in anyway benefit Bandlab. If the OP wants Cakewalk to open source the code than the OP should buy the code from Bandlab and then give it away. At the very lease the OP should reimburse Bandlab for what Sonar cost Bandlab before proposing this absurd notion. Also as a practical matter at present we users have a robust development team that is able to know every line of code. That would not be the case if it were not controlled by a single organization. As to transparency that notion is not of any use to anyone. I don't need to know how Cakewalk is written to use it.

  21. My belief would be that they are trying to get rid of the ability to crossgrade for free. They've known for a long time that people were doing that and I believe it was intentional for a while but the time has come that they likely want to end it. Especially as more high profile companies are bailing from their Kontakt engine and more samplers are coming out as competition for Kontakt which could cause a shift. They had no real competition for a long time, now we have UVI Workstation and Falcon, SINE, Whatever Spitfire is calling theirs these days, Engine 3 is right around the corner with a massive overhaul, I also have my suspicions we're going to hear about a new sampler by Spectrasonics soon... They are going to want to capitalise as much as possible at this point. It looks like Embertone Arcane is still free but who knows how long that will last for.

  26. Yeah, it's definitely best to leave your wallet at home 'cos they're very accommodating and will let you play with anything you like for as long as you like with zero pressure. Whoever set the place up really thought about it. In the cafe area (to the right of where you walk in at the start of the video) there is also a small performance area for open mic type things and there are also fully equipped / serviced studios for hire.

Well y'see........ craigb is way more cleverer than wot we all are cuz he nearly got a qualification in something or other and can remember lots about pies and also count backwards from 501, therefore he didn't think it was worth telling us about some other stuff because we're all too preoccupied with the contents of our nostrils anyway. Or something like that.

  31. Many thanks for your input, most of all your observation. I went back in the studio and tried a few things that you and Gary commented on. I find on the re listen, the vocal is a bit hot and I tried a remix on the background vocals and I kinda liked it so I think I'll try it another way with the lead vox fronting the chorus. When it's done I'll post ...very helpful so thanks .. Sabby

  34. But that will turn people off from sales. If they want to stay competitive, they should be sweetening the deal for customers, not souring it. If the problem is that people are getting crossgrade pricing for free, the solution would be to keep the libraries Kontakt Player compatible, but also make it so that free Player libraries don't qualify for crossgrade pricing, and make the de-facto price for a full license of Kontakt $249, with crossgrade pricing reduced to $149. The $399 price tag has been a point of contention and complaint for everyone I have known who makes music for a living, and it's what had been turning people off from NI on the whole, and pushing them to look for alternatives. If they want to win customers back, they should make their flagship products more affordable. Especially in this day and age when affording things is more difficult thanks to COVID shutting income down for a lot of people.

  35. Just another suggestion for the IK Product manager. Is it possible for IK Product manager to internally use multiple download sessions when downloading files from within. Currently, if I download an update, my browser with a download manager can download the relevant files 2 times faster than if I did it using IK Product manager. I am on a confirmed 47 Mbps connection. IK Product manager downloads at 2.1 MB/s whereas my browser with a download manager can downloads it at 5.6 MB/s I just checked this with the Sampletank 4.13 update.

  38. Ok, so I have two things I need to say. 1. SORRY! and for what I am sorry, about, see point 2. 2. I was WRONG regarding expression not being a kind of volume control. I did an actual check of the MIDI specs and Soundfont specs, and it IS an adjustment of ONLY volume. The volume (CC7) sets the maximum value for volume, and expression (CC11) is for the adjustment from 0 and up to the max volume set by CC7. I thought otherwise because an old CWP I opened that used CC11 to fade out near the end on a strings track, had some extreme vibrato that wasn't there originally. I thought that maybe the old VSTi I used to load/play the soundfont did not respect vibrato on expression. In hind sight, maybe it was actually a delayed vibrato on the patch. After reading the specs, I went back and tested the VSTi with other patches, and there was no vibrato added with CC11. So, sorry about all that, my bad. I will go back and mark those statements as incorrect in my old posts (I will simply leave them in, but strike them out to keep the logic in the flow). The other thing I learnt reading the specs, is that CC11 is actually the course control, and there is another one for fine control (CC43) to enable 128 different levels between each of the 128 levels of CC11. No-one uses or even supports it, as it really becomes theoretical to be able to hear the volume adjustments down to that detail. Even though this re-enables my ability to control track volume (now that I know CC11 operates how I though it did a week ago), I still think for all the other reason above, that mapping track Gain on a MIDI channel to velocity, is far from optimal. Regarding the above questions by User 905133, I will answer these a little later, possibly with diagrams!, I have a few things I need to sort in the physical world first.

  39. To perform a clean re-install of Cakewalk follow these instruction https://help.cakewalk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360034066393-Clean-Install-Cakewalk-by-BandLab Be aware that step 9 removes all the plug-ins installed in the default VST folder "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins" This includes any third party plug-ins you may have installed there. You will need to make adjustments to the documented process to conform to your custom install location.

  41. Curious about GR6. GR5 looks to be 9 years old. It sounds ok but there have arguably been a couple major jumps in amp sims since then, so it would benefit from a core update. My understanding is Komplete includes everything that's been released in the line up until that day, some of it limited to Ultimate. They also sometimes bring previously-ultimate stuff down into the regular version I think? If that trend holds, the stuff included at this point would be (via https://www.native-instruments.com/en/catalog/😞 Arkhis (for underscore composition) Stradivari Violin (it's a violin, suprise!) Pharlight (vocal sample thing, synthy) Mysteria (vocal sample thing, but this one is spooky) Session Guitarist Electric Sunburst Deluxe (extended version of Electric Sunbrurst, Les Paul electric guitar) Straylight as you mention (granular cinematic thing) Picked Acoustic as Simon mentions (acoustic guitar) Noire as you mention (piano, supposedly very nice) Raum (reverb plugin) a handful of things in the play series So there's some value, but looks most attractive for people composing scores. The current lack of any flagship product updates - Kontakt, Reactor, or even something like Massive or Guitar Rig, does seem to make it incomplete (inkomplete?).
