  1. One of the best Pianobook freebies, Quarantine Piano is a Yamaha U3 recorded several ways, plus extra noises of the pianist moving around, and several textural Kontakt instruments built from the samples. A freebie that has a 25-minute walkthrough, and actually needs it. https://www.pianobook.co.uk/library/quarantine-piano/

  3. Strezov has a freebie with free Taikos, although not from this library. You can get it HERE While you're at it, you might also want to get their free Duduk from Balkan Ethnic Orchestra and free Xiao from Jade Ethnic Orchestra. By the way, one of the many advantages of the Strezov X3M engine is that it is the same for all their percussion libraries as well as the percussion libraries within BEO and JEO. As the engine makes it super-easy to customize where the instruments go, it's very easy to mix and match them. I'm still kicking myself for not buying their orchestral library.

  4. Going by v1 there's a fair chance that the price will vary, but this does look like quite a big improvement so it may not reach the lows of v1. Who knows? A selection of diary entries for 2020...... Jan 1st: I've just got a feeling that this is going to be my best year ever... March 30th: I've just had to wipe my ***** with a pot noodle lid..... 6. Was a huge AMD fanboy for many years. My very first build was an AMD. I've had many debates with @Jim Roseberry about AMD vs Intel. Nothing would change my mind... Until.. I bought an Intel I7. Then i finally realized some things that he had been saying that i didn't quite understand from an AMD point of view. Really glad we had those respectful debates, he made me want to try Intel to see what all the "Hoopla" was about. Needless to say, i'm still using Intel to this day. I will say though, AMD has made some great strides as of late and i am interested in trying some of their newer processors but for now, ive been extremely happy with Intel.

  7. I managed to import a midi file that was full of single notes and chords badly played (by me) and it recognised them fine including single notes and lay them out across the keyboard. I was very impressed

  8. Matt was correct in that it appears to only allow you to input single track MIDI type 0 files. And it can only be block chords - single notes will not work. So, I don't think the MIDI import feature is of much use - you might as well just enter the chords directly on their keyboard. Besides, when you enter manually you can name the chord, plus you can enter individual notes. Also observe that you are free to enter a note that is not the note you are playing. So you might create a CMAJ7 chord and then put an individual E note that would normally be a C#. So you can create some interesting, easy to play progressions, for instance, alternating between chords and bass notes. And yes, they do need a manual. Older videos show some of the features not mentioned in the latest video with perhaps the most important feature being that you are not limited to one keypress. So you might set up basic chords that one finger plays and upper extensions that another finger could play. Finally, I've found that RipChord is great fun feeding into Chord Potion.

  9. I was just thinking back on the varying lengths my hair has been over the years. In 1968 I was hauled before the school board, along with my bandmates, and told that if we didn't all get a haircuts we'd be suspended from high school. We were chastised for being a bad influence on other students, told that we were heading down a path to damnation. Shortly after my father, an air force officer, requested an overseas deployment to serve out his last few years before retirement. They gave him a spot at a spy installation in England. This is 1969, the Beatles are still together and Carnaby Street dictates fashion the world over. I was quite enthused about being there. To me it was a pilgrimage. When I arrived at my new school, I was shocked that some of the teachers had longer hair than mine. The first friend I made let me know that hair rules were not a thing there. So I did not cut my hair again for three years. It was a magnificent head of hair, too. Voluminous - I looked like a walking tumbleweed - and rather long, past my waist. When "Almost Cut My Hair" came out, it caught my ear because Mr. Crosby was informing me about something I'd not been aware of. That in America you could be harassed for having long hair. Then I saw Easy Rider, and began to feel a bit apprehensive about returning to the US. So days before leaving the UK, I took a pair of scissors and reluctantly chopped off my locks. To a very conservative length, or so I thought: just past the shoulders. I felt I'd be able to blend in and not suffer Peter Fonda's fate. Turned out that shoulder-length was just the fashion in Seattle in the 70's, in fact almost a requirement if you wanted to work as a rock 'n roll musician. My guitarist had a fashionable "shag" haircut. I thought it made him look effeminate, but he enjoyed a rather impressive track record with taking barmaids back to the motel. The shag style wouldn't work for my wavy hair, but I got some tips from a beautician on how to manage long hair. She introduced me to the hair dryer, a device I'd not be without for many years. Every night before a gig I'd spend half an hour prepping my head. Eventually, I tired of the road and took a day job as an electronics engineer, thanks to my mentor and previous boss from when I'd taught electronics. On a hot day in July, I cut my hair "short" (not really) to mitigate the heat. It was kinda nice. No more blow-drying to straighten the curls. A tiny amount of shampoo would do the job. I could even wear a hat if I wanted to. And the shorter style seemed more fitting for the nerd look I needed to cultivate in my new job. But I couldn't leave music alone, and after a while formed a band and quit my job. Haircuts were no longer required beyond an annual trim. So dust off the hair dryer, we're on the road again. Nowadays I have my own business, work at home, and can present myself any way I want. T-shirts and jeans. Hair long, hair short, combed or uncombed, it doesn't matter. I cut my hair short for my annual trip to the Philippines, let it grow for a year, cut it off again. Doesn't matter to me which stage it's in. Until now, anyway. Time has caught up to me and is enforcing its own rules, rules that would have made my Nebraska school board proud. Sure, let those hairs grow as long as you like. But there won't be enough of them to obscure your scalp. Ha ha. BTW, today I am wearing a hat.

  10. FWIW, The Omni Channel is actually a very good tool for problem solving. ie: The De-Essers are amazing at reducing acoustic guitar squeaks. I don't even use it for the EQ/Dynamics... 😁

  12. Yes, and I was only aware of one big price drop when it was out. Honestly I'd expect Scaler 2 to have an up-tick in price. I can't predict the future, but I'd personally expect $49 to be the new discounted price (when it does go on sale) for Scaler 2. Who knows though. I wouldn't say this about many programs, but seems like $49 is a reasonable price. With Scaler 1 going on sale for $29 last year, hopeful for a $20 upgrade cost.

  13. I think I do have some more Eventide, but I don't use them so I forgot. No, I am not buying the Arturia verbs! They will have to give them to me in a big package or no dice! 😄 I'm sure I will keep getting more of the Halls of Fame reverbs that Best Service gives out free with purchase during Black Friday. They are at the top of my list of reverbs I never use. Spaces II is now my go to reverb for almost all acoustic instruments. It's a very deep instrument with lots of... spaces. Pro-R when I want something a little different from that. Blackhole and Raum for weird reverb. Cory Pelizzari recently did a video saying that my life will be over if I don't buy Seventh Heaven, which would involve getting an iLok. After watching this video I realized I have a problem. My name is Reid and I am a Reverbaholic. Lately I have been doing something really weird. I've been making a lot of music with the stuff I already own. I realize that's wrong but I have to confess it's true. I do admit I'm getting Scaler and EZBass. But no reverbs, thank you.

  15. You can use a CAL script to split the MIDI into tracks. A Type 0 MIDI file with the channels all combined will always come in as one track. I have two CAL scripts for doing the spliting, but I'm not sure where I got them "Split Channel to Tracks.cal" and "Split Channel to Tracks-Choices.cal" Google found this: https://bobbyprincemusic.blogspot.com/2011/06/sonar-x1-using-cal.html

  20. I like the big fan/radiator on the CPU. Slow turning big fans don't make much noise, it's the little ones running fast that make that chorus of whines, horrid noise. I have to confess to being a bit of a Vegas fanboi, mainly because that program made me a lot of money over time. I would not see it as inefficient at all and would not be moving away from it as my primary video editing software. When it comes to cutting, Vegas is the fastest at that out of all NLE's. It is well known that Vegas is all about CPU power, in fact all NLE's benefit from CPU grunt, so I also can't agree with claims that the CPU is of not much concern. Video editing isn't that much different to Audio editing on DAW's, same rules apply. Namely, having a powerful CPU, decent multiple hard drive set up and making sure you are editing in the most efficient codec for the software. Final cut pro has Prores, Avid has it's DNxHD codec but what most people don't realize about Vegas is that it also has it's own native codec which is Sony MXF. You can also use Cineform or the Avid code quite well. I can use mov, with the canon and GH4 footage and that works quite well but if I were cutting something important I would use Sony MXF or Cineform. It all depends on how much editing you are going to do on the footage, whether you want or need large file sizes for multiple generation lossless editing etc. I just looked around and apparently there is another codec out now called MagicYUV which people are using in Vegas, which seems to be amazing but is still new. In the film group we ran, we had Avid (media composer), Final Cut, Premiere, Lightworks and Vegas systems that were around then, but more important than that was the editor. People were less concerned about the system used and much more concerned about the experience and skills of the editor. Generally, for major shorts and features, Avid, Final Cut and Lightworks were preferred. Vegas and Premiere were seen as documentary, short indie films or events on a budget etc I used a Vegas system because it was what I grew up with. I wouldn't cut a feature film with it but then I wouldn't cut a feature, I'd give that job to a more experienced editor. Vegas is fine for shorter projects or one hour long wedding videos and great for event videos with multiple cams or documentaries with multiple cams, it's probably the best for those tasks, for fast editing and turn around. Hitfilm is a bit dodgy because what it is trying to do is difficult, it's like a poor man's Adobe Premiere and After Effects rolled into one. It's getting better and the quality of effects are excellent but the power requirements are immense. They are saying i9, 32gb (preferably 64gb or more) ram for 4k. I think at this stage I will stick with Intel and just cough up a bit more for an i7 and 16gb (possibly 32gb) ram since I will only be using 1080p, can always add another stick if necessary. That should also be more than fine for DAW side of things. People trying to use Hitfilm at 4k with complex composites are asking too much I think. I don't really like using proxies either. Thanks for everyone's input on this, I've decided on Intel, based on input from this thread, searching around and compatibility/heat/what has worked for me in the past issues. I've moved from an i5 to an i7 and possibly 16 to 32 gig ram. Nothing spectacular considering some of the DAW's getting around here but I think it will allow me to do what I want without constraints and without paying out more than I need to achieve that.

  28. Hi @Josh Wolfer incidentally we have already fixed this issue for the next update. Fortunately the problem isn't that the gain is incorrect. Rather its an inaccuracy in drawing the gain ruler in the bus pane. You can verify this by looking at the VU meter - it should still show a 0dB value indicating that no gain was applied by the drawn envelope. You should see the fix in the next update.

  30. If you start with the New Preset option, then import the MIDI file. It will assign each white key to a note in the file, in order. You can then switch to edit mode and use the arrows to move the blue keys to where you want them and maybe edit them by selecting the step. But I'm not sure what kind of MIDI files it will import. All my successful tests were simple, single track MIDI 0 files, when I tried to do a more complex MIDI file I got nothing on the import. I think it's a bit picky about what track it will take? The files it failed on were Type 1 MIDI files with two tracks, a tempo track (with only one setting) and a note track. It wouldn't import them (though I'd think it should have) all I got was a blank keyboard, but no errors either.

  40. They don't always know if you bought something or got it free. So they go by registration normally. I actually got into the group buy the first time accidentally by registering something I picked up on sale but forgot about (I travel for work and don't always bother until I'm home and have time.) Turns out it was registered in the timeframe of the group buy.

  43. I hate the way they end up in separate clips now. Why would you want fragmented clips all over the place for the same instrument part ? Maybe it's just my playing that sucks but I son't always get it in one pass and some things are easier done in two or three passes It's just another added step having to bounce them all to one afterwards - I'm sure this never used to happen, and that they would all just automatically merge into one clip. ? Or am I going nuts ?
