  12. I'm in the UK so not eligible for this....but I've just been checking these smaller KRK out as I wanted a pair of mini monitors. Of course the best way is to take a listen but my googling shows a mixed opinion - they are certainly very popular and probably not a terrible choice. These are the older g3 not the current g4. Doesn't seem so cheap as to make it a nobrainer. https://www.americanmusical.com/krk-cl5g3-rp5-g3-classic-5/p/KRK-CL5G3NA-LIST (per speaker) Also my main Genelec monitors are vented and sound amazing, so don't discount bass reflex designs. PS: went for the genelec 8010 in the end, more $$$ but hey....

  14. The USA and S.Korea got their first case the very same day. The US denied it for 6 weeks (it's just a flu/hoax/etc.) while the politicians secretly dumped their stocks. S.Korea immediately isolated. Now we are the epicenter of the virus. It's late, but not too late. Stay home. Some governors look out for the welfare of their constituents, others look out only for themselves and the people who bought them with huge campaign contributions. Notes

  17. We'll be doing regular live streams while we are all stuck inside, not just Mark and Ryan but guest artists and other great IK folks like Dave "Squids" Kerzner - I may even do some but I'll likely do more guerrilla streams* on Reddit's RPAN or something like that They'll also give away stuff on these and this time it is AmpliTube for iOS. I won't be picking the winner so unfortunately I cannot favor anybody from here. Anyway, these are informal and if you don't know Mark Menghi he's with the band Metal Allegiance (with Alex Skolnick, Mike Portnoy, and a bevy of guitar and regular guitarists and drummers) and certainly has been impacted by the shutdown. He and many of his metal peers have had to scramble since they make their living making music so feel free to ask about that and anything else Mark (and don't forget Ryan who's obviously quite knowledgeable though probably with a bit less edge than I have ). Not sure either has the magic bullet for this situation but they're both cool guys who can talk about guitar-related (or any music-related) topics or just shoot the breeze. They'll take questions, for sure. https://www.instagram.com/ikmultimedia/ *Dibs on the band name "Guerrilla Streams"

  18. I did misunderstand your point to the extent that you want to live play multiple VST's, each serving as a layer in your output simultaneously and find the usual routing in Cakewalk frustrating. I still do not agree that putting all of the layers on a single track is a best practice, although I can see how it would make the mechanics of routing that single track simpler albeit at a sacrifice of some flexibility. The logical solution to your most significant problem would be for Cakewalk to allow a one to many MIDI to instrument track simple routing, or a MIDI send from a single MIDI track. In the SONAR days people were solving this issue with a virtual MIDI cable or virtual MIDI patch bay application that would intercept the keyboard input and distribute it to the different MIDI tracks simultaneously. That may still be the simplest method. http://forum.cakewalk.com/MIDI-to-Multiple-Tracks-One-Working-Solution-m1573767.aspx Lets agree that we probably both know what "layering" means.

  19. Could be the Mixing Latency Buffer Size is too small. Depending on the Driver Mode and interface manufacturer this may be adjusted using the slider or the ASIO client software provided by the interface manufacturer. WASAPI Shared driver mode is not adjustable. If using WASAPI Shared, try a different driver mode.

  20. Mix tips from you are gold. You should have heard the acoustic guitar before I turned it down I'll get on that. Too much snare is a definite recurrent pattern in my mixing, thanks for the observation. In a song with a vocal I'd be more careful but here I'm ok if the snare kind of drives it. Worth a look, tho. cheers and thanks! -Tom

  24. Both good recommendations there Starship (though IKs authorisation procedure might be a bit forbidding to newbies). I've been playing around a little with the Project Sam freebie and as you say it has a small number of great sounds. Not done much tweaking with it yet but look forward to exploring more I've mentioned them in the Deals forum but the Palette and Soundscapes plugins from Flintpope have some very pleasing soundscape / pad sounds. There are a few other freebies there but none grabbed me https://flintpope.net/free/

  31. @Maxim Vasilyev the problem with track names displaying garbage has been fixed. As mentioned above its actually caused by the way the VST3 SDK reported this so technically could have been easily addressed from the plugin side (most other VST3 plugins handle it). However I have made a change to resolve it from our end. As far as VST2 goes there is no way for a host to report track names to the plugin via the standard VST protocol so this won't work with Relay in any host. You must use the VST3 version to get this functionality. Cakewalk has supported VST3 channel naming from the get go for many years now. With regard to track ordering in Neutron, this is a deficiency in the plugin since it it appears to be sorting the track names alphabetically and ignoring the host specified track order. There is a specific VST3 interface that can be used by the plugin to identify the order of tracks. If they use that the tracks will be sorted in the same way that they appear in the host. This is how it works with the Softube Console One. BTW the same track ordering problem can be observed in other VST3 hosts such as Reaper.

  33. @Matthew Sorrels I finally had a chance to look at this. The problem is not in the Cakewalk code. The channel names are provided by a standard VST3 interface called IAttributeList and provided via ChannelContext::IInfoListener. In this the string is properly null terminated but VST requires the user of the string to use the string size provided and properly null terminate their target. This is not being done by the Izotope plugin hence the garbage appears. I will pass on this information to Izotope.

  34. I would start with the Cakewalk by BandLab included Cakewalk Studio Instruments, and/or the included TTS-1 GM 16 channel multi-timbral synth, to get familiar with adding instrument tracks to the DAW. The Cakewalk SI includes a usable (some folks like them) bass guitar, electric piano, string section, and drum kit. The TTS-1 includes sounds that cover the old General MIDI spec. This thread has pretty much covered it! You can see there are a lot of free or inexpensive virtual instruments that you can add (to roll your own collection). But the caveat is that you're not likely not find an extensive collection of *high quality* band, orchestral, and/or obscure instruments all in one place for free. You will have to search and download to find what you like, or buy sample collections to fill in any gaps.

  37. I just popped in to one of my favorite makers of virtual instruments, Applied Acoustics, to update my email preferences. Rumor has it that around this time of year they send out a free voucher for your choice of soundsets if you are signed up. They have a free VSTi called Swatches that offers a sampling of each of their many sound packs. Swatches is periodically updated to add more sounds as more sound packs are created, so I check in from time to time. There was a new version, now they are up to over 420 sounds in the thing! And they are really good sounds, obviously they choose some of the best ones to show off each soundset. A|A|S stuff, especially products that use only the player, like Swatches, is usually pretty resource-friendly.

  38. Well said Andrew! Of course there is the other scenario where NKS users or potential users will be looking at other DAW's which offer this integration (I know that I am, myself) . I think it is in CbB's interest to offer this integration in order to GROW THEIR CUSTOMER BASE. I think this would be an extremely positive move for CbB

  39. This thread needs a bump. For those of us still using Soundfonts, .sf2 files, there are some nice free 64bit alternatives: BassMidi Vsti, https://www.kvraudio.com/product/bassmidi-vsti-by-falcosoft A multitimbral sf2 player, simple to use Juicysfplugin, https://github.com/Birch-san/juicysfplugin Not multitimbral .sf2 player, also simple to use TX16Wx, https://www.tx16wx.com reads .sf2 and many more formats. Rather complex to work with Plogue Sforzando, https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando.html convert .sf2 to .sfz Sobanth, https://www.kvraudio.com/product/sobanth-by-benjamin-rosseaux Had some crashes with this, but maybe just me

  41. These are all great suggestions! I am going to put in a plug for Synth1 from Ichiro Toda, and the Synth1 Librarian from Neutrino Sky. You can customize the Synth1 color scheme and panel size if the stock version is not to your liking. https://www.kvraudio.com/product/synth1-by-ichiro-toda https://www.kvraudio.com/product/synth1-librarian-by-neutrino-sky Here is a zip bank with 14,000+ free presets for Synth1. You WILL need the Synth1 Librarian to manage and search these presets! And you can show/hide the Synth1 UI with one click, but it is not necessary to have it open to audition presets, as the librarian provides a wrapper for the synth. https://veryrandomstreams.blogspot.com/2012/03/over-10000-free-patchessounds-for-free.html

  42. Both of these threads should be stickies... for NEW users, one of the first things they are gonna want to know is "What are the most-liked free VST(i)s for CbB." Managing it for the OP could become a nightmare, but a link in the OP to an external webpage might be simplest. There are often a lot of golden nuggets dropped by folks in these forums, but not everyone has time to mine for them.
