  3. I believe that playing overly loud makes me walk out of venues, that I'll never go to again. I stopped seeing one band that I absolutely love to see, I've been to there shows 7-8 times , but have refused to ever see again because of 2 occasions where they blew me out of the room. I've traveled out of country to see this band. They are great performers. But - I won't ever pay to see them again.

  10. This is my second year compiling Black Friday sales in alphabetical order on VI:Control. If you're interested, you can check it out HERE. I also put stuff into broad categories. The idea is to help people The listings don't have the detail like you get here, and I'm certainly not as fast, but you can get stuff at a glance and click on what interests you. FYI, I don't list any intro prices or one-day sales. It's just about developers selling previously released material on a BF discount. It's also a record for the coming years into what the sales were. Here's my 2018 POST

  11. Installed and working fine (though it wasn’t an easy ride an a Mac either, with the installer insisting to install in Edith’s knickers). I like what I’m hearing. Used an organ with one of the keyboard presets called “Flutter clouds” or something, and got ear candy as a result. Thanks again, Matthew.

  12. To be honest I think they are missing a few things, I can't seem to MIDI learn any controls (especially the X/Y control). And there doesn't seem to be anyway to animation the X/Y pad via a LFO/curve/etc (like say Rob Papen's stuff). Also doesn't resize. I may be missing something, have to see if there is a manual or something other than the built in help. It has a lot of the Output-style UI features but the installer is garbage. It really insists on putting the plugins in a C:\Program Files\vstplugins and c:\Program Files (x86)\vstplugins directory, even if you don't use that and if you tell it where to stick it, it still puts it there and the place you picked. It also installs the 32 bit version even if you had it turned off. And it also stuck an extra copy of the vst3 version in the same dir I pointed it to for the VST2 (why would it do that?). I get tired of cleaning up after installers. I guess I should be happy, I got it using points so it was essentially free.

  15. Sounds warm and colorful, and has never been heard by anyone until today! The resulting sound can be described as a CP80-like but a bit more tuned due to the fewer number of strings. It also includes a noise (static) generator and hammer, resonance and releases control. (And it's MacOS Catalina Ready The original patent proposes a great idea about string vibration direction that results into a better and cleaner sound. (video and audio demos here) You can get it today for $39 (Limited time intro price)

  17. So Spitfire sent me a build of the Spitfire Audio app that has an "optimize" button that does something to the BBCSO files on your hard drive. It ran for 2+ hours. End result is it does now load a bit faster, 5 mins vs 13 mins on my test project. Which I guess is good. But the engine playback is pretty awful with any stream/buffer settings they asked me to try. And it's pretty awful with anything I did try outside that. I could get the playback decent but it would eat 1gig of ram per-loop (and not last long), or the playback was studdery and glitchy (but the ram usage didn't grow so crazy) nothing even close to usable. And that's at 2048 samples on the audio interface. I wasn't sure it was reasonable to expect any computer could load up the whole BBCSO, so I loaded up an EastWest Play Hollywood Gold template (I bought a pre-made one recently since up to now I always built projects by hand). I enabled all the short articulations and put the same 2 bar midi loop on them. About 40 tracks total, and it plays perfectly and loads in 30.7 seconds (same hard drive as BBCSO). So I thought that still might not be fair since BBCSO loads all the articulations, so I went through the template and enabled every major/main articulation. Resulted in like 270 tracks in Cubase. That project consumes about 30gigs of ram (which is pretty close to the BBCSO) and loads in 1min7seconds and plays back perfectly. I guess the next thing to do would be to build a full on orchestra template with Kontakt and see how bad that is. In any case I'm more convinced than ever that they really haven't done the ground work to build a professional class sampler for this kind of work. Maybe it works well on the Mac, but I'm not even sure about that, maybe it's just my computer. I'm going to keep working with their tech support but I've moved on as far as thinking I'll ever be able to use this.

  20. I bring a SPL meter to the gig. Actually I bring two (one for myself and one for my partner). In addition to monitoring volumes in the audience, I periodically test the stage volume as I have control of my monitor's volume. Volume is a drug to musicians and I can tweak the volume of the monitor over 85db simply because it feels good. The SPL meter keeps me in check. Legal issues didn't occur to me, but I can see them. I figure it would be hard to win though both for the reasons slartabartfast mentioned plus how could you prove that the person initiating the suit isn't listening to music over 85db in his/her car or with the TV at home. I just don't feel right harming another person unless it's self-defense. Other volume offenders are movie theaters (bring your earplugs), lawn mowers (I always use ear plugs when mowing), other power tools, aerobics rooms in health clubs, etc. My wife used to take an aerobics dance class in a health club. The music volume approached 110db. She wore her 25db musicians ear plugs. A health club damaging people's ears has no business calling themselves a health club. I don't carry a SPL meter wherever I go, but after 40 years of keeping the volume on stage to 85db I have a good perception of when it is over 85. When I go to hear another band, I bring my musicians ear plugs, and if it gets too loud, I walk out. The only concerts I go to now are symphonies, and have learned to sit in the back. Sound decreases with distance. Still I bring my 15db ear plugs. I did bring my SPL meter to a competing duo's gig. It was by their request (they are friends as well as competitors). I reported the volumes which ranged from about 80 to 95 and he decided to buy a SPL meter before the next gig. As I said, I don't feel right harming an innocent person. Besides for that, I love my audience, they are like extended family to me. Some of them have been following us for decades. Why in the world would I want to inflict permanent harm on them? 29. I was in Barnes & Noble about a week ago because I needed a certain physical book (i.e., not a digital copy). They looked it up on the computer and said "Here it is!" To which I said, "Great, just send me in the right direction and I'll find it." Their response: "Oh, we don't actually carry it, but we can order it for you!" I did, however, get the chance to pull off a fun line. While I was talking to the guy looking up the book, someone asked where the Self-Help area was. My reply: "Doesn't that defeat the purpose?" The inquirer just stood there confused wondering why the employee was laughing... *Sigh...*

  32. If the start points of the clips are different, then you would need to align the clips manually to get them in sync. One thing you would need to do is turn off "Snap to Grid" see page 380 of the reference guide. this would allow you to move clips at no specific resolution. There is also a Nudge Command "Process --> Nudge" (see page 376) that will move clips based on settings that you choose "Process --> Nudge --> Settings". And the reason I point you to the manual is that there are a lot of Grid and nudge settings and I am too lazy to type it all out...😝 Peace, Blindeddie

  33. Consider that when you go online to update CbB, Windows will also begin to update in the background - whether you want it to or not. I recently had an experience where Windows 10 updated the night before an event we were scheduled to live stream. The update wiped out the audio drivers. The live stream wasn't accomplished because we had no audio and couldn't figure out why until a deep dive much later. These types of incidents can make a person look very foolish, especially if it is in front of a paying client. An event like this can result in not just loss of a client, but perhaps other legal issues for failing to provide contracted services. Yes, CbB is free, and they can do what they wish. I still wish they would make it so that you could export a file with the latest info from your CbB install, upload it to Bandlab from another computer that is on line, and get a file back that I can upload to keep my CbB running. It would also be nice if CbB would provide a toaster message indicating that "Cakewalk will need to update in 30 days" so that you can do it before it goes into Demo mode. Just my thoughts.......

  34. I had a really great experience with the use of a carefully set up windows on my old desktop for as long as 10 consecutive years(!) without any hiccup or unwanted adventures. I only used it to have the load of an audio/midi work done quick and smoothly and another pc, a laptop actually, for anything else. Once proper set this pc was as reliable as a japanese car and never gave me any problem, always working perfectly because I have used it exclusively for a specified music job and it always gave me expected results. I was very satisfied from it that way, never let me down no a single once, probably it would still serve me well even today if it was 64-bit but there was time for an upgrade. For years it was easy to go that route with previous windows versions plus I had my Sonar with only serial# but now the new software is asking for online access and since windows 10 and the forced updates things have changed. It's much more difficult now. You have to put so much care to keep it offline or keep it from unnecessary updates if you have to go online even for a moment. And any forced are the unnecessary ones in this case. It's most likely that at some point one of the updates will mess up something and here's the problem because I absolutely don't want or need any changes, any new features, quality or security updates etc. on this particular machine, like you would need for a typical online pc, to have the job done. I want it to stay untouched for the next 10 years. On my new laptop (the online one) I only have done one bigger update since I have it, from 1809 to 1903 just recently, and already had some problems to overcome. But it's fine, that's what I have this laptop for. But again, I don't want *ANY* changes to be made to my production desktop for years, just keep it working flawlessly the way I have set it. Well, I'll try and see how it goes. Soon I should have it up and working. Not sure this will answer your question but at least I have tried.

  35. The tool is called Launch Pad. The thread about it is Prior to v1.7 it used a simple copy process to create hot backups. A change was made to CbB 2019.09 which made the simple copy process unworkable. Now the program has to do a little more work to insure the selected version runs correctly.

  36. Oh, snap, now I'm really sorry you had all this trouble, I couldn't figure out where you got the idea to copy these installation files and just run them. This is making sense now. You did know what you were doing, it just doesn't apply with the new download manager, I guess. BA makes some other little files and it seems like they are important. It probably has something to do with identifiers used to integrate with the online BandLab DAW, which is still being worked on. I don't know if you know, but if going back to earlier versions is important, Steve Cook has a utility that lets you archive and switch CbB versions. I keep a few by using the trick of copying and renaming my Cakewalk Core folder before I let BA do the update. I'm always nervous about messing with any software installation that's handled by a download manager, because I'm terrified (to use chris' term) I'll wind up in a situation like yours. Even VST2's, which are pretty forgiving, I don't like moving them from one folder to another because I'm afraid that some resource will wind up in the wrong place. Thank you for answering my question! These are all very valid points. I'll reply, and please, I'm trying not to do it in the spirit of trying to win any argument, but rather provide information and possible solutions that users of the forum might not know or might not have considered. I believe in understanding what's going on rather than waving a hand and saying "a DAW works better when you leave it offline" or whatever. That's why I asked. If that is true, I want to know why. I don't like computer superstitions. I'm a big redneck when it comes to Microsoft forcing me to run updates and malware protection and all that. I use Windows 10 Home and figured out how to permanently disable Defender's realtime scanning because it was causing a performance hit. I just leave it off. My computer, my rules. I had to learn how to enable some hidden features to do it, so I did, but it worked. First, you might be pleased to know that Microsoft seem to have had a lot of users complaining about the forced updates issue and have taken some steps to address their needs. On my Windows 10 Home system I can set up to 18 hours a day as "active hours" where Windows won't try to restart the computer to apply updates, and it will never try to apply them if it detects that I'm active on the system. Also, I can pause updates for up to 35 days at a time if I want to. I still have to accept the updates at the end of the pause period. I don't have a problem with that, although I do understand that others might. On my systems at least, extra disk activity caused by Windows downloading the files for the updates has not caused performance issues. That is, so far. I have Delivery Optimization set to allow downloads only from other PC's on my network, so my computers don't distribute Windows Update files to other computers on the Internet. I recommend that anyone reading this make the same settings. Next, regarding background processes (and disk activity), if someone is, like you, savvy enough to be concerned about them, I encourage them to get to know tools like LatencyMon and Process Explorer and Windows' own Task Manager and Resource Monitor and really take control of your system. It doesn't take that long and it's fun to see what programs are actually doing what. I learned a LOT about how Cakewalk does things by running Resource Monitor and clicking on Cakewalk.exe and watching as I did various tasks. What spiked disk activity, what spiked CPU, etc. If network activity were to affect a modern computer enough to cause a dropout in the audio subsystem, it would mean that something was VERY wrong with the network, and I mean the network inside the house or business, or the computer's network interface configuration. Bad network card drivers can mess up latency, I had it happening on my own system, but it was a problem that needed to be solved by rolling back the driver, not pulling the plug. However, an easy way to eliminate all of the above concerns is taking the simple step of disabling your network interface during critical recording and mixing sessions. Open Settings, click Network & Internet, then Change Adapter Options. Right click on the icon for your Ethernet adapter and select Disable. When you want to turn it back on, go back in, right click and select Enable and you're back online. Then you'll know you're getting the best of both worlds: system updated with the latest patches and untouched while you're working. No need to unplug anything, move anything, reconfigure anything. Same effect as pulling the network cord out. Network outages are ever a possibility. Here I will take a comically defensive pose and ask if your Internet has ever been down for over 6 months? Really, this is not so much a reason to have your computer disconnected but a cause of its being disconnected. As long as the outage doesn't last 6 months, it should be okay from CbB's standpoint? Regarding reducing exposure to hackers and lightning bolts (which left your DAW alone both times it looks like), it's true that no connection at all is the best protection against threats to both hardware and software. But there are many other steps that can be taken to ensure safety, and those threats are rare, despite the amount of attention viruses and malware and all that gets on the news. Get good lightning protection for your electronics, get a good malware solution (more importantly, use best practices on your computer) and you'll be fine. Or only plug your computer in for 10 minutes on a clear sunny day every 3 months and Cakewalk will still be happy and your system not at risk. BandLab is an online company. They seem to be really good folks, but I don't think they are likely to do much more to accommodate people who can't or won't get online. It's a free subscription model and probably going to stay that way.

  40. There's two ways of doing this: 1. If you always want to open more than one, uncheck the "Recycle Plugin Windows" settings within Preferences->VST Settings 2. If you only want to temporarily keep one open, click the "pin" icon at the top right of the plugin window. This will keep this plugin window open, whilst recycling the rest.
