  1. I recently upgraded some of my home PC's to Windows 10 build 1903 and was curious what audio performance would be like in a worst case under optimized scenario. I was pleasantly surprised! This is a very rough demonstration showing low latency audio using Cakewalk with Windows 10 build 1903 and nothing more than an on-board audio chipset and a really old PC (built in 2008). Audio is low-fi in the video since the sound is going through some ancient desktop speakers and recorded through my phone. This is intentional The machine is a very old Core I7 PC built in 2007 that I recently upgraded to windows 10 build 1903. I was curious about audio performance so I did a quick test in Cakewalk to check audio and was pleasantly surprised when I was able to use WASAPI at the lowest latency setting (144 samples) with no audio glitches whatsoever, using just the onboard RealTek audio chipset. The test showed live playback with a virtual instrument, but it also worked well with standard audio track playback. For this test I used WASAPI exclusive mode with the onboard Realtek audio device, since Windows 10 shared mode low latency only works with the Microsoft inbox HDAudio driver presently. I haven't come across any other on-board devices which support Windows 10 low latency with shared mode. This test shows that WASAPI is finally able to live up to it's promise of low latency audio in Windows with even basic vanilla on-board audio devices! I don't recall this old PC every being able to do low latency playback on prior versions of Windows, so I attribute this to some combo of improvements to Cakewalks optimized low latency WASAPI support, or Windows 10 build 1903 itself. Either way this is impressive on multiple levels. Its great that Windows can do completely acceptable low latency audio support out of the box today. And the fact that Window's 10 works better on an an ancient PC like this is an accomplishment. Microsoft has been getting a lot of flak these days, but after the fiasco with Apple's Catalina breaking music apps, Microsoft deserves some kudos for their support of legacy systems. Its not surprising that some things go wrong with such a massive base of hardware but the fact that a 11 year old PC can perform decently with low latency on a current OS is quite an achievement. Now if Microsoft Surface team can get their act together and release 1903 on their own first party hardware that would be even better lol. I think @Pete Brown might be happy to learn this 🙂 PS: I'm curious to hear what other users performance is like with 1903 and just using on-board audio devices with WASAPI in CbB.

  3. Meh. Not a fan of this company. I had a bunch of sessions I had to mix that had it all over the place because it was included in the Slate bundle at the time. I signed up for the sub, and later I ordered a year during some promo. I cancelled my sub, and signed up with the year promo, and they ended up double charging me. Also, the diffusion seems off compared to the hardware. They also kept teasing that all these new plug in's would be added on and they never came. Later they added the Goldplate, which is great, but I'd rather just buy it outright. I'm happy with the UAD (which is currently a buck cheaper by itself).

  4. @Variorum I found it, I found the song that the midi "Song5" is based off of. Took me forever, but I got it. The midi is modeled after Get Back In Love by Tatsuro Yamashita,1988. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7dxbap7F_Y Sorry for the radio silence, hopefully you get this message even after all this time.

  5. The Nembrini MRH810 is good for metal, but I'd say old school metal, not the super saturated modern high gain stuff. This amp is good for that Alice In Chains type of grunge metal sound. I play a style I call "Doombilly" which is basically a melodic stoner doom metal w/ some swing and twang. Sometimes the "twang" is more in the attitude but often I've got a legit twang metal guitar tone going. I play a Warmoth baritone strat w/ 14-62 strings tuned to A# standard. This is a sample of a grimy sludge doom riff I wrote earlier tonight. Here my signal is split and I'm running two instances of the MRH810 and playing through them simultaneously: The first MRH810 has the gain around 4 o'clock and the bx_yellowdrive in front of it giving it a tiny boost but no additional distortion. Second MRH810 is on the clean channel w/ the Kazrog Ram Fuzz big muff in front of it. Both amps are using the stock IRs. I haven't had a chance to try my OwnHammer IRs on this amp yet. This is a real grimy @ss doom metal sound, I'm still dialing it in and this isn't mixed this is just how I'm hearing it when playing. This is all ITB, but tonight I also ran a hardware big muff pedal into the MRH810 and it took it really well. Tomorrow I'll try the swollen pickle into it, but it's cool this Nembrini amp takes hardware pedals as well as software pedals really well.

  8. ACT is Cakewalk API for Control Surfaces. MackieControl.dll is also ACT based. They label "ACT" Plug-in Dynamic Mapping, which is a part of ACT API. And they call "ACT MIDI" one of DLLs. A bit confusing... AZ Controller should work correctly with any resolution up to 14bits. By "correctly" I mean careful precision auto-detection, including 7bit transmitted over 14bit messages (most "Mackie compatible" devices which do not claim high resolution explicitly). Exotic value ranges (some iCon devices used that) are also supported. 7bit controls apply special (non linear but invertible) mapping, so pan center can be set exactly. Touch sensitivity and feedback are supported. Too good to be true? Yes... Unlike "plug-and-play" MackieControl.dll and simple to configure ACT MIDI, AZ Controller is a DIY platform 😉

  14. Chris, Personally I would save the money and buy a used Mackie Control. You can pick one up used at guitar center for 200 bucks. This is of course, the older Mackie Control units. I bought one about 5 years ago on Craigslist for 150.00. It was the best investment I have ever made (for my studio). The older Mackie Control units run through Midi Ports vs. USB like the newer units. You can control Plug ins, Selection points, loop points, Markers, Views and sooo much more compared to limited buttons on the iCon. Mackie control also has a half sized meter bridge (LCD). iCon doesn't unless you plan on ponying up more bucks for the add on meter bridge. Its up top you, but I would do the research before investing.

  19. Footnote re: 1903: My laptop updated to 1903 several weeks ago. Not sure if it was just coincidental, but the overheating-from-excessive-CPU-usage problem seemed to go away. In the past I had to kill Windows functions (e.g., Indexing, Presentation Foundation, etc.) to reduce the CPU % that seemed to cause overheating; so, if 1903 has fixed that, kudos to the MS team that made it happen. Thanks for the video and for reporting your results.

  26. The other Sound collection that is real good is Arturia. When it goes on sale you get 22 instruments for $250. I love that package. I have Komplete too which is also great but between those two youo have every synth emulated pretty much. There's also Omnisphere but I don't think it's a substitute for either of these 2 packages.

  27. Thanks everyone I have been rolling with Cake today. Did a midi track, converted to an audio track. Did an audio track of the Casio CT-x 3000 Electric Piano and Piano Did a track and used the Cakewalk keyboard as a modulaiton wheel (worked) I'll make a template to guide newbies and submit it. Thanks so much

  30. Emil Mangelsdorff Quartet feat. Joe Gallardo, Wilson de Oliveira & Manfred Schoof Emil Mangelsdorff (11. April 1925) , imo one of the most underrated sax player , His brother, Albert, is welknown in Germany. Emil Mangelsdorff has been rated as the best sax player in the Guitar player polls from the end of the 70th and the beginning of the 80th, Michael Brecker as Nr. 2. A sensation for a german sax player which not many people ( in germany) know. I´m looking for some videos from his performances during that time (end of 70th and beginning of v the 80th) in the US. which seems to be hard to find, anybody ?

  34. Some VST instruments really peg their preset volumes way louder than they should be - there is no standard, so from one instrument to the next initial plugin instrument volume can be all over the place. Lots of plugin authors like their presets to sound 'punchy/loud' and they are set to initial values that are way too loud. Whenever I load a plugin instrument or live instrument/mic, I always set the combo of the plugin output volume and the assigned/associated audio track(s) gain setting to a peak of around -18, so that I have lots of room to work with. 35. skyline Great production on this and the music is outstanding. I watched the video several times and I made up my own meaning of the lyrics before reading your background info on the song. Boy I really like your observations of the outsider and the pros and cons of that. Wonderful lyrics!

  40. Hi, Wow! This is fantastic all the way around!😀 Excellent songwriting and arrangement, outstanding musical and vocal performances, and a fresh sounding, clean, modern mix! I love the creamy clean guitar tones and tasty guitar fills, and the vocals are really dynamite. I definitely agree with John's "Radio-Ready" comment, the mix sounds pro all the way.👍 Excellent work, thanks for sharing! Best wishes, Bob

  45. Hey, Variorum. I've been scouring the net looking for info on this midi but found very little so far. What I've found suggests that it's not a WinJammer demo file, but rather the "WinJammer Demo" refers to the shareware WinJammer Demo (as opposed to WinJammer Pro), which puts WinJammer Demo in every midi's meta info. I believe this as I've found many midis with "WinJammer Demo" in the midi info. It probably served as a watermark of sorts back in the day. I do have an idea to find out what the midi might be though, but I would need the midi to do so. I'm a midi connoisseur and I have dumped several Gb of midis from the web onto a hard drive. If I had the midi I could compare byte for byte the content of the midi with all the midis in my collection, potentially I might already have the midi under another name besides "SONG5.MID" as many duplicates of the same midi exist on the web under many differing names. I also just want the midi because it's an awesome piece and I'd love to mess around with it myself. Let me know what you think until then I'll continue my search for info on this midi.
