  1. One use of EQ before compression is to use a high-pass filter (to roll out unwanted low frequencies). Doing this prior to compression can ensure the compressor doesn't respond to those (unwanted) low-end frequencies.

  2. An update... The superstar legend that is Jon Sasor sorted it all out for me, and I have just installed Z3TA+2 on my new system! All I had to do was show him proof that I actually purchased the synth, and then he supplied me with my serial number and registration code, as well as the installer. Awesome customer service! Thanks to every one who has tried to helped me with this problem. Don't worry - I will be keeping my codes and installer safe from now on. Thanks every one. Cheers Dave

  3. The answer can be both, honestly. Also, it is common to apply eq only to the side chain input for the compressor. You can use this to avoid triggering on bass sounds without removing bass or to turn your compressor into a de-esser.

  4. I mean, there's no right answer to this kind of question. Both have their advantages or disadvantages, plus it'll be relative to which compressors or EQs you're using. As mentioned, shaping the bass before you hit the compressor is going to have a big impact on how the compressor reacts to the input, but maybe you want to tailor how the EQ sounds after the compressor too. Depends on the material and what you're going for. Most important thing is to train your ears. If you understand how your tools work, then you'll be better able to apply them as you see fit. Experiment, listen, learn how things play together, then adjust as needed!

  5. This is a purchase you won't regret...ever! If I could only have ONE plugin (which is actually a set) it would be Ozone 8 Advanced! I could do without EVERYTHING ELSE I own, and would be able to do just about everything with it! That ALONE is worth the price...everything else is "icing on the cake (walk - see what I did there!)"!

  6. Jumped on the upgrade from Neutron Advanced 2 for $125. I see Neutron loading faster, lower CPU hit, and a few new bells & whistles. Plus all the other goodness in MPS. I swear I think it sounds better than Neutron 2, but I'll make myself believe ANYTHING after hitting the Pay Now button. But I think it's for real this time.

  10. I worked for the largest MEMS microphone manufacturer in the world and the advantages MEMS microphones have are consistency / less variation minimal aging very small (so they can be put in strange locations/cases) surface mount, easy for automated processes to put them on PCBs can be used as ultra-sonic detectors (i.e., they can have very high frequency response) They still suffer from (relatively) high noise (SNR of 65dB is very good for MEMs mics - not a problem for room compensation measurements) low headroom (typically 120dB SPL max - not a problem for room compensation measurements) a somewhat restricted flat frequency response (which can be "mostly" compensated for since they don't have much part-part variation - but it might eliminate the need to have a serial number with a custom measured frequency response) sensitivity typically has a +/-3dB variation (probably not a problem for room compensation measurements)

  11. Effects count - processor speed is the largest factor Track count - disk speed is the largest factor 1. Faster bouncing/freezing of tracks would be mostly down to CPU speed. 2. Faster loading of projects would be affected by disk speed and CPU speed. If you're dealing with large sample-libraries (that load particularly slow), you can put those on a M.2 Ultra SSD (sustain ~3500Mb/Sec). 3. Ability to run more tracks and plugins (as you can probably guess) is down to faster disk-speed and faster CPU. As a point of reference: Conventional HD sustains ~200Mb/Sec SATA SSD sustains ~540MB/Sec M.2 Ultra SSD (using 4 PCIe lanes) sustains ~3500Mb/Sec When it comes to CPU speed: Not all processes in a DAW can be multi-threaded. Playing/monitoring in realtime thru an AmpSim plugin at 96k using a 32-sample ASIO buffer size... isn't something that lends itself to being heavily multi-threaded Some plugins/instruments like UVI Falcon only use a single core This is why clock-speed is the single most critical factor when choosing a CPU for DAW purposes. Note that CPU core performance doesn't scale 1:1 IOW, Doubling the number of CPU cores doesn't double performance. Having more cores is beneficial... but not at the expense of significant clock-speed. This is why Xeon CPUs are typically a poor choice for DAW purposes. They have more cores... but often significantly slower clock-speed (resulting in significant performance hit). In a perfect scenario, you want highest available clock-speed... and the most cores you can get.

  17. Wow Larry ! I have to say you did a great job on your version of Time . You have good chops on the guitar and vocals .Plus, I think you have a golden ear man . I can tell you have patiently worked on this song and didn't settle for a second rate performance or second rate instrument sound ... All your songs elements are top shelf and impressive sounding all across the board . all the best, Kenny

  18. I agree with both reply's above. I almost always put the compressor first in the chain (Compressor>EQ). Because if you use it after, your compressing frequency's you might not want to compress. There are times though, boosting certain frequency's can add a great effect.

  19. A compressor may introduce results, that make you need to EQ, and an EQ may cause a need to compress. So, depending on the material, it can be useful to have more than one of one or both. I would start with an EQ, though.

  21. I was hoping no one would ask that.😁 For many and they are right an RMS of around -12 dB is often used. However, my view is let it be what it is. I see no reason to adjust it up wards or not because it isn't at a proscribe level. To me if the over sound is good and nothing is close to clipping yet it is fine otherwise why doggedly force something where it really doesn't want to go simply to do what some others do? I think we should view any of the target dBs as guidelines not hard and fast rules.

  27. The default plug-in names are based on the VSTPlugInNameFormat setting. Read about the variable and its options here. Set the variable here. Note: initially this screen is empty. Add a variable and its value to initialize the file. Custom plug-in names may be set in the plug-in browser. The documentation is in the middle of this page.

  30. Michael, Thanks for the great complements! A long time ago I realized that some of my favorite Classic Rock songs didn't really have great mixes, just were great songs. Before I record a song I do a demo with just a click, guitar, and vocal. When you do this for a lot of you own songs all at once, you can not help but become objective about your own music. Believe me, you don't want to hear the songs that were cut from this project. I'm not sure I want to either:)

  33. On the fourth song now, and you got me!! It just gets better and better!! So far the album line up is spot on buddy!! Like I said, you got me! I am impressed. And I am talking about the song quality, not the mixing or playing. Great hooks, each song stands on it's own and shows it's own style. First song gave me a feel of a Ska band, I kept waiting to hear some horns come in!! But they never did, and the song never suffered!! Title trk was excellent. Really like the falsetto that you put in there. Vocals on that are just really good and raw!! And the guitar solo is on the money!! Very pop and I love it! Love the end!! Next two songs just reinforced what I had already heard. Just excellent song writing. Sometimes Going Back great hook in that chorus!! Guess I wrote enough. If you can't tell, I like it!

  34. I found this, which pretty well explained it...so I am now further eductated: Electromagnetic waves differ from mechanical waves in that they do not require a medium to propagate. This means that electromagnetic waves can travel not only through air and solid materials, but also through the vacuum of space. ... This proved that radio waves were a form of light!

  35. Unfortunately, Steinberg installs the Generic Low Latency ASIO driver (by default). This driver can bump your desired ASIO driver out of position. IOW, If the proper RME ASIO driver was selected in CbB, it may now be "bumped" out of place (leaving the Generic ASIO driver as the selected driver). In the locations scook mentioned above, delete the Generic ASIO driver entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ASIO HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\ASIO Once deleted, no application can see/select the Generic ASIO driver. This works for ANY ASIO driver you don't want to use. ie: Many hardware guitar processors, drum modules, and synths now function as an ASIO audio interface. If you know you never want to use your Helix, AxeFX, GT-1000, TD-50, Montage, etc... as an audio interface, this is a quick/easy solution.

  36. Yes, as long as the lanes aren't muted they'll all play together. When you're comping however, it automatically mutes the other lanes for the selected section. This is very quick & powerful if you're doing comping, but a real pain if you're not, as you then have to manually un-mute the lanes. That's why the option to remove comping (and other options) from the smart tool is so cool.

You are close to bring us something really cool !!!! Put away all technical thoughts , You master them !!! And just offer us what you would really want to offer us !!!!!!!! sorry for the edit !!!!! But ,according to me , You should also throw away all the conventions ( After the fifth must come the one or the fourth or the minor six and so on ....) Just to say I am a fan!!!!

  40. Hi , congratulations!!!!! It is something important to bring a project up to a kind of reality ... To be honest, I am not sure I wll buy the album , but it helps me spend a cool evening ,better than listening to the radio . Funny , it brings me back to , I don't know .... Somewhere between CSNY and some more recent productions.... But , sorry sorry, you know ,what makes me buy an album is it that it does not lead me back ,but it brings me somewhere I have never been.....(Hendrix on his time and this one I miss :Amy Winehouse...they did something never done before ,according to me , that's why music while being a business is also an art!!!) Your album is great , and again, it is cool time spent in the evening with your music... Carry on and maybe one day , the unknown will come out from your guitar or from your writing..... Anyway , again, perfect production, good playing and cool singing . Thanks for sharing. Olivier .....mmmh maybe I will buy it😎😎

  46. @DCMG the single click auto previewing a clip shortcut was way too specific a shortcut to be the default behavior. For example you might want to isolate a clip ahead of time while you are playing and the time jumping would be very unexpected in that workflow. Or you may want to click to jump to a position within a clip in which case automatically jumping to the beginning of a long clip would be very inconvenient. As part of the unification and streamlining of seeking and playback workflow we changed that function to require the shift modifier key. SHIFT clicking a clip in a take lane will do what you want and jump to the start of the clip so there is no loss of functionality. Or use the speed comping shift spacebar workflow that Jon mentioned.

  47. I have always had the best results when learning about something specific that I am trying to do (or to a question asked by another user). Then it always makes more sense in the usage context, and I am not as likely to forget how to do it later on. Just reading about a list of features, or watching some videos about them is useful for getting an overview of the program's capabilities (and this is a deep one), but nothing beats applying specific skills to meet one's current objectives, hands on style. One feature at a time. Maybe the better question to ask is what are you attempting to do?
