  2. That's the kind of sentence that makes me wonder if it was a good idea to sell my 8-track tape recorder...

  3. I enjoyed this. A well written song usually writes itself. One can easily hear a melody without one being there. Great job.

  4. My advice... If you want a smoother ride, stay on the backside of the update wave. If you ride the crest, sometimes you're gonna wipe-out. (cue that tom intro)

  5. Here is a public service for those that may have forgotten what that means!! Dilettnate: a person who cultivates an area of interest, such as the arts, without real commitment or knowledge. And how many of us around here falls into that category!? : )

  8. Hi All, Long time, no visit. I acquired a Yamaha G3 grand piano last year, and have not spent much time with the DAW since. Just having way too much fun playing, and marveling at the expressiveness and presence of this amazing instrument after playing digitals for 30 years! I've not yet endeavored to record the Yamaha (it's downstairs, far from my desktop DAW), so what I'm sharing here was recorded from a Roland RD-700NX. I mostly did this just to capture the MIDI before I forget how to play it as sometimes happens when I improvise something and then don't get back to it for a while. Like most of my stuff, this will probably evolve over time to have a distinct intro, more variations in chord voicing and rhythm, and maybe a proper'bridge' section, but I think it stands up pretty well as is. Double points if you can hear the MIDI editing 'cheat'. ;^) Cheers, Dave

  9. One of first my internet collabs from 19 years ago, IIRC Sonar 6. I replaced the drum track, removed the Waves DX versions & remixed using new plugins.

  13. I love the fact I can do all my lane edits with more confidence, especially now the comping can be turned off for the smart tool, so I don't comp by accident. My guitar playing has really gone south due to lack of practice, so I'm finding myself recording things in phrases much more often than I used to. Being able to build a track up with each phrase (or multiple takes of a phrase) in different lanes is fantastic.

  14. Blades, I use comping all the time. Great feature. But I do know that you and others have expressed a desire for a more 'Layer' workflow. To be honest, it's been so long since I messed with Layers I really have no idea what it use to be like. That said, there were times that I wished I could work on clips in Take Lanes the way I could on a regular trk. And from what I can tell, that's exactly what I can do now, work on clips in take lanes just like it's a regular trk! It's really the best of both worlds in my opinion. : ) What I do is record all my takes that I want. Then after I can comp straight away, or go to the new Smart Tool Options and turn off the Comp Tool and work them takes just like they were on a regular trk. Split, copy, paste, stretch, group, drag copy, drag multiple clips, drag copy multiple clips, drag copy multiple clips to new project, and on and on! I love it! This is the best I have seen this. Ever since this came out I have been working with it and am really satisfied with the results. This is a keeper for sure. I hope this has given you some guidance. If you need more info I will try to help as best I can.

  16. I've only messed around with InstaChord for a few minutes, but as someone that has played guitar for over 25 years and only spent hours with a Keyboard.....it seems like a good tool for individuals that lack keyboard skills and knowledge to easily play more complicated chords with a more realistic feel. Altering the timing of when each note is hit within a chord that is played takes a bit of time on the "programming side" and quickly switching between some complicated chords (and strum/picking) style patterns takes actual dedication to learning the instrument. To me, tools like this are aimed a little more directly at the non-keyboard players that still want to get some of those parts down, or the experienced keyboard players that want to better simulate guitar parts. I think the Youtuber's I watched fall into the latter that rave about it. The "guitar voicings" with picking patterns certainly gives a feel that from a keyboard player perspective is more difficult to pull off. Those of us that have played guitar for 20+ years, sit here and think, well it doesn't sound that authentic and wouldn't that be easy to play on guitar? That is the crux of a plugin like this, to assist in an area where one's skill might lack in a area. For me, I likely don't have a lot to gain from the guitar voicing piece, but do have something to gain from the Keyboard voicing and chord + action programming. Will see how that works out when I actually invest time with it. Just as I use EZ Keys on occasion to work out an idea from a different perspective. It is easy to fall into ruts when you play an instrument (such as guitar) for a long time and nothing feels new or interesting.

  22. The thing about Cakewalk being free is that no matter what DAW people like to use, it's almost certain CbB will have features their DAW doesn't have. So it's worth downloading and becoming familiar with it. For example, I don't know of any program that can do the "drag a piece of music to the tempo track to analyze the tempo changes" function, or does virtual instrument upsampling (or mix recall). The biggest issue with CbB has always been reliability. For example I needed to do something with Waves plug-ins last night, and simply could not get all of them to show up (and for the ones that did, CbB insisted on showing only the 32-bit version). I'll keep trying, but had to switch over to another DAW that handles them without difficulty to complete the task. So I think it's important the developers keep trying to nail down the loose ends, and make the most of what's already in there, before adding too much bling.

  23. Oh Shure dangle a fred like this in front of me knowing I can't resist This is a true story sad but every word a fact I can no longer wear my speedos It was because of the following incident of which I to this day have trouble dealing with One day I was at the beach trying to find a lady friend but wasn't having any luck at all. I was wearing jeans and a shirt so I must have looked out of place. I ran into an old friend by the water that I knew never had any problems finding girl friends so I stopped and asked him for advice. He wisely suggested I go to the Swim Shop right away and buy a speedo 2 sizes too small! Then go buy a potato and put it in there. HE guaranteed me it works every time! So I did all that. I thought this is great! I even felt like a babe magnet! Feeling empowered I commenced strutting my stuff up and down down the beach and getting looks from EVERYONE. I thought it was working but people looked at me disgusted or just laughing as I went by. I thought somethings just not right so I found my friend again and asked what the hell everyone’s laughing at me for? My friend looked me right in the eye and said "DUDE, you’re supposed to put the potato in the front”

  24. Just reading through all this - as a very basic user I don't understand most of it but what has really made an impact is the responsiveness of the development team to people's comments and issues. Customer service at its best I reckon. I'll probably wait until the issues mentioned are ironed out in the next release / hotfix as I don't even know what the functions referred to are. I'm just happy to be know that the team are on it! 🙂

  25. I had a thought for my Sound on Sound column on CbB...it's great that CbB is free, but it doesn't include the instruments that were in Platinum. Given the money you save from not having to buy CbB, and the uncertainty over when/if any instruments would be re-introduced in a Cakewalk store, it seems like it would make sense to buy Reason, ReWire it into CbB, and use it as a synth/sampler/drum computer backline for CbB. Although it might seem using ReWire is obvious, there are some fine points and those would be the subject of the column. Thoughts? Worth doing?

  31. I like this one. I like the guitar sound. Vocals are not ordinary at all. But they sound damn good!! I gotta give it to you man! You can come up with some weird stuff that grabs my attention and don't let go!! (case in point: Just heard this high pitched squealing and then Suck Your Brains comes on! Listen to that twice!) Like Bjorn says the drums are good. But I really like that guitar tone!! Lead off song on your next album.

  33. I received the ARC 2.5 with mic yesterday. All at the cross grade price of $99. Very prompt handling and shipping. I had been looking at this for awhile, but the full price, non-group promotion wasn’t in my wallet. I do have the Sonarworks headphone edition, but wanted something to help look at my overall big ideas, but tiny room office! Registered and authorized. It does seem like I can choose some slightly higher priced items through the current group promotions. Like others I do wish some of the SampleTank instruments were part of this. I would almost guarantee they will be next year. Now, what else to choose? That some day, I might even use!

  38. In this case, it was a bad path added to the scan path. The scanner was trying to load every dll under "C:\Program Files." This is guaranteed to cause all kinds of problems. There may be a few extra dlls in the normal VST scan path but if there are a lot, this is a good indicator the scanner is looking in folders that should not be in the scan path.

  40. I find that the iZotope Portal, even with their instant 'wait! here's a coupon' always costs me significantly more than JRRShop or other discounters. The same $125ish deal mentioned in the OP is $141.55 on iZotopes Product Portal (that's with a 5% off coupon offered when they got worried about my procrastinating to purchase). Hopefully YMMV, but I've stopped even looking there except to get a base price reference.

  44. We've been continuing to put additional stability fixes in every update, so I'd be very surprised if the original 2018.04 release build was working better. There have been numerous optimizations and fixes in the past year+. Beware staying with Windows 7 forever, Microsoft is ending their support for it in January 2020. We've managed to isolate the problem preventing projects from opening in this update and will be issuing a hotfix for it soon, but the temporary workaround is to disable the "Allow Only One Project Open At a Time" setting in the Preferences (which is not on by default).

  45. Hi Noel, I can't speak for @btbrock, but for me I always would click in the empty area to deselect as I edit while the file is playing. I edit multi track voice over, podcasts, etc. and will select a section across multiple tracks and then ripple delete them. Once deleted, I always just click in an empty area to deselect AND allow the file to continue scrolling. When I needed to jump to a specific location, I just clicked up on the timeline. Guess we'll have to re-train our muscle memory. Not a big deal ESPECIALLY since you guys are doing superiorly BANG up Job of continuing all the great things that brought us all to Cakewalk in the first place and continuing to make it better "under the hood." THREE CHEERS FOR THE CAKEWALK TEAM!!! Wally
