  4. I tend to stay away from giving songwriting advice. I will help/assist with the engineering process and I'll even go as far as giving my opinion (which doesn't always go over that well) But Its hard to tell someone, "you shouldn't do this or do that". The artists who have gone on to become very successful are the ones who dared to be different. I learned a lot about songwriting from listening to the Beatles. Their earlier albums were classic pop blueprints. But when you look at what they did on Sgt. Peppers, They threw out the classic pop song mold and created bizarre arrangements. Some would consider this an instant fail. It turned out to be genius.

  5. Hey John - really good song, piano sounds good to me. not hearing a problem with the bass, but you may have already made an adjustment before I listened. please take this as constructive criticism and please don't take it personally, but your vocals are the weakest part of this song. you're off pitch in several places and could use some breath support in most places. I only say this in the best of intentions. I was given some really hard to hear criticism several years ago and it has only made me better by learning to improve. I hope that's how you take it as well. nice song, well played instruments! keep up the good work!

  7. We have a very handy feature where if you select multiple tracks, you can click "Selected Track Input Series" from the input menu and assign multiple different inputs to the selected tracks, in the order they appear in the inputs list. This does not exist for the outputs section, however. I do a lot of collaboration on projects where another composer and myself work on the same projects, but every time we share a file we need to reassign the track outputs, which gets very tedious. In our case, if we could simply assign outputs in series, it would save us a heck of a lot of time and fiddling around, and would make the process of collaboration using Cakewalk just that extra bit smoother and more pleasant.

  9. I think all songs are arranged differently, depending on who is writing it. Everyone has different styles, even if you are writing for the same genre. Also, everyone has a different understanding on music theory. That plays a lot in arrangement. Think of it like this. You can have 50 painting of a sun setting into the ocean. painted by 50 different artist. All 50 artist will go about painting it a different way, but still ending up with a sunset into the ocean.

  13. Michael is completely correct. the voice takes as much practice as any instrument, and I certainly am not an expert vocalist, I have to train and practice constantly just to get to the level that I have. I sincerely apologize if I have hurt your feelings. even tho the voice is an instrument, it's the most personal one. saying someone needs help with their singing is usually an insult and believe me I did not intend to insult you. I only want you to take my comments and use them to learn to do better. you have the potential. I am sincerely suggesting that you use that to make yourself better.

  16. Interesting topic. I had one of the devs at work come up to me asking about a project at home he was working on, to try to write music based on AI. Resisting the temptation to laugh and tell him how mad he was, I gave him a few pointers and outlined the scale of the problem, but also recommended some reading on theory and code libraries (e.g. Juce). However one thing I did say, is if he restricted his compositions to doing say Bach chorales (which are based on a pretty strict set of harmony rules), then *maybe* he'd get some usable results. But in general trying to quantify musical arrangements, or come up with a set of rules on something so subjective is more or less impossible.

  17. Same here - On one machine I had to re-install Windows 7 completely and do the upgrade from the clean install. I highly recommend getting a new drive, cloning your existing on onto it, removing your old drive and doing the upgrade on the new one. It it fails, at least you've got your old drive intact.

Kloon, martins, bjorn, Doug, and Grem (again)- Thanks so much for taking the time to listen and reassuring me that the mix isn't as bad as I was originally thinking. @Grem- After listening to various setups I have at my disposal, I have to say I agree with you on the "whisper" assessment. I'll have to revisit that next session. 😀JB

  24. I quite often swap projects between different machines, and in some cases different ASIO profiles on the same machine (i.e. I may be using my mLAN system for tracking, then want to continue using my Focusrite 18i20). What would be nice, would be the ability to setup some mapping profiles for known setups that aren't currently active. In other words, you'd say whenever I get a project with "XYZ Audio Dev 1" then ALWAYS map to "ABC Audio Dev 1", and so on for all the audio devices. This could be done via a pop-up dialog when you first open the project, so if the audio devices in the project are different from the current audio devices, you'd get to choose the mapping & save it as a "mapping profile", or pick the mapping profile to use from a drop down.

  25. John I didn't notice anything in the bass that stuck out in any particular way and I thought the strings worked nicely esp around 3:25 with the staccato notes. Really like the ode to your piano theme. Lots of areas to explore with that and you came up with some good examples ("so guided to my direction" - nice). Have to say too that your song structures are so different from what I'm used to - yours are loose and unconfined which works quite well with your lyrics and orchestration. Well done with that!

  27. kloon Boy I really like the overall sound of the song (which isn't too descriptive but I can't find a better way to put it). The lyrics are pretty general which does make the listener interpret the meaning in a personal way. I suppose the lyrics could be accused of being overused or cliched, but to me a cliche is a good way to express something concisely since everyone knows (for example) what "barking up a wrong tree" means. Nice work!

  28. I can accept your opinion about Liquid Notes, but wish to clarify the comment about Java. Java is a very powerful computer language, but it does require a Java runtime to be installed in the PC host in order to execute a Java program. Running a local Java program in this runtime is no more risky than any other executable that you allow to run with privileges on your PC. Java is still one of the leading languages used for enterprise scale computing. However, most of the negative publicity surrounding Java relate to the web browser plugin, which is well deserved, rather than the runtime. I would definitely avoid the web browser plugin, and have made sure to keep it uninstalled for many years now. Running code from any external source via a web browser has always been a bad idea from a security perspective. Think MS ActiveX and Javascript exploits, as well as others. Since Java is not a compiled language like C or C++, it needs a Java runtime so that the code can be interpreted when run, in contrast to C++, which must be first compiled into an executable ".exe" to be run. So trusting a local Java app or a local Windows executable requires similar permissions. Knowing and trusting the source of the code is always the best way to avoid compromise from any program! Bottom line, imho, fear of Java is not a valid reason to avoid this useful app. With all respect, it may be a PITA for some, but nothing to fear!

  32. I think so. You get some high quality drumsets and the ability to use samples in beatmaking. But the thing I like the best is the Percussion Agent. It works in a much cooler way than everything else in GA. There is a comparison chart HERE. Steinberg does provide fully functional trial version that you can get HERE. I think you need a dongle, though.

  35. Both the DS2416 and the SW1000XG share the same set of drivers, so they will actually work right the way through to (and including) Windows 7 32 bit. The issue is that in Yamaha's infinite wisdom, they designed the cards so they require both the 3.3v and 5v inputs on a PCI 1.0 slot. The vast majority of motherboards dropped the 5v, so choosing the right motherboard became paramount if you wanted to keep using them. There was also as you say, chipset issues with PCI 1.0 emulation. That's the main reason I still use a 3rd gen i5 - my Asus motherboard has the last chipset that doesn't emulate PCI 1.0 (it's native), and also supports 5v in the PCI slots.

  36. John I use EZ Keys too. Great program. I'll do the same thing, grab something I like from the browser and 'adjust it' to fit what I am going for. Also starting to use Band In A Box for the same thing. To just write stuff. Ok so it ain't you playing, but put it more up front, it sounds good!! : ) You did fine job on the arrangement.

  37. I am glad this popped up again, since I had never reloaded the "AProEditor" on this machine. Bottom line, MIDI learn is a fail, but with the AProEditor, you can map the Mod Wheel (CC1) to a secondary source (I used slider 1). If not installed on your machine, for the A800, scroll down on this page till you see "A-PRO Series Editor for Windows v1.01" Download and install that (I used compatability mode (right click prior to running) for Win7). Next, in this video at the 3:00-3:26 point, follow what he does to turn on the USB ADV DRIVER. Then, at the 5:00 in the same video (keep that open), follow his connection setup (Input Port: A-PRO 2, Output Port: A-PRO). I would then recommend "Receiving" the data from your A800, then saving it as a file on your computer. Next, I clicked Slider 1, and in the pop-up I put this (you can use any control, but a slider makes the most sense for me): A Pro Editor should now look like this for Slider 1: Finally, I "Transmitted" this back to the A300. I used Control Map 3 for my ARIA, but unless you change that you will be on Control Map 1 by default. Since I only changed that one slider, I again saved the map to my computer and overwrote the existing. You can scroll through control maps in the A800 by hitting the white left arrow key next to the "ACT" button till you see "CTRL MAP" and scroll through them with the "Value" knob (and save up to 19). The video mentioned above walks through some other things, but I hit upon all the steps needed here. When finished, I left my MIDI input to "A-PRO 1" and now slider 1 acts as a secondary Mod Wheel. They both work, and ARIA responds to the last one touched. Only caveat is that you need to get used to adjusting the slider after changing patches but prior to playing, since the slider will suddenly "jump" to the slider value as soon as you touch it (and might be way off from where the patch loads it). I am glad you asked this question, since my A300 causes me the same grief and I will need the "mod wheel" messing around with Kontakt 6.

  38. Don't think I've ever heard an autotune effect around here lately, but I thought it worked pretty well. Ms. de la Cruz is an excellent vocalist and her performance is quite enjoyable. I thought the video was very well done and I wouldn't be surprised to see it moving up a Billboard list one of these days.

  39. Not counting the soundblaster clones, mine was the Yamaha DS2416 DSP Factory: Cost me half a months wages at the time, but ran like a dream in my Cirrus P-166 with 64MB RAM. As soon as they started appearing on the 2nd hand market, I bought another and had them linked together along with 4 x AX44 (the breakout box in the drive bay). I also had the AX16-AT ADAT card interface for them, which had fed by a Behringer ADA8000. The two cards gave me a 48 track mixer with dynamics & 4 band parametric EQ on every channel, and 4 x effects units (each the equivalent of an FX500). I got nearly 20 years use out of these babies.... and they're still working on the Win 7 32bit boot on my studio PC with SONAR Platinum. This is the reason I hardly touched a plugin until about 5 years ago.

  41. Good song, good work. You did the video? I will hold off coment of the video until I can see it at home on a good connection, not this mobile one I am on here at work. Song I thought was really good. I liked the Autotune stuff. Fit right in, wasn't too over done, gave a little 'Ahhh' moment! She does have a good voice. Very pleasing. I thought the bass was good on my end listening here at work through some JVC's. Good mix, great production.

  42. I like the beat, her voice, your pleasant if slightly dated video, which actually fits a kind of 80's groove. I didn't care for those auto-tune moments but please don't judge by my tastes, which are prehistoric. Mix wise, a little more bass wouldn't be out of place. cheers, -Tom

  44. It doesn't help that Cakewalk's documentation is very thorough about describing the many options for audio export while being careful not to explain or recommend any specific option (at least that I could find). This is unfortunately common among DAW's, among metering plug-ins, and even, sadly, among articles and videos about level and loudness. I have found them all strangely coy when it comes to specific instructions. By that I mean like where you actually insert the metering plug-in, which might seem obvious, but it's not for someone new to all this. If you don't know where to put it, it's like getting a Roku Box without knowing that you are supposed to connect it to the Internet, but if Roku Boxes also didn't pop up error messages saying that they weren't connected to the Internet and also without knowing that you're supposed to be able to watch Amazon Prime and Netflix and Kanopy and Hulu and Tubi and all this other stuff on them. I would expect there to be something like "examine your DAW's signal flow chart to find the last point you can insert the loudness metering plug-in before monitoring and rendering and do no level adjustments past that point before rendering" but nope, they just expect people to come from the womb knowing that. In the DAW world, the documentation usually says "you can render from here, there, and everywhere, isn't it wonderful how versatile it all is?" When it would be helpful to at least be told that most of the time you're going to want to choose this and this and this option. And if you find that your rendered file's level is too low, increase it on this or that fader. The simplest stuff is not always painfully obvious to first-timers and because it's considered the simplest stuff it won't be documented as well. When I was starting out with DAW's I read a couple of articles and watched a few videos about this stuff and studied my DAW's documentation and at the end of all that I knew that Oasis had ruined radio by using a brickwall limiter and that it was up to all of us to use the LUFs standard to fix things. I learned that we could use metering plug-ins on our DAW's to do it, also standalone programs like one by my old company, Orban. I also knew that there were a bunch of different LUFs numbers that different streaming and digital music services used as their standards. What I did not learn from any of my reading or video watching was where to put the plug-in, which of the numbers I should be shooting for, how Level relates to Loudness, and what to do if my LUFs were too big or too small. And that seems weird to me, that after all that effort to figure it out, I'd still be so in the dark, when all those things are not only quite important, but also easily explained (except for the loudness/levels thing, which I still haven't sorted out).

  47. This is why I have previously suggested the "Input Echo" button and function be disabled on tracks where input is set to None regardless of the "Always Echo Current MIDI Track" setting. Until something like this is implemented, the best thing to do is make sure to turn off "Always Echo Current MIDI Track" in preferences.
