  4. Some really great advice here, and as you can see there's a lot of different ways to approach things. Like @Craig Anderton touched on, everyone will have their own checklist of things that they do, or they recommend against other people trying, but it's all down to whatever process works best for you at the end of the day. That said (and I'll add this next bit with a huge serving of irony), it's usually best to mix in one process and master in another, in a different environment, preferably with someone giving it a listen with fresh ears. Going to a proper mastering room that's purpose made to have everything entirely flat, run by someone who is used to that environment (that's a big thing) and isn't subject to all of the fun things that can happen when you do it all in the same studio as the mix. Unless you know your studio is dead flat, and your monitors are accurate, mastering elsewhere is great for catching those things that you can miss during the mix. If your lows are overhyped, for example, you'll never know that if you master in the same space. The irony is that I don't do any of that - I mix and master in the same process, and in the same space! HAHA! But to put that in the proper perspective, my room is acoustically tuned and I know it really well - limitations of the space included. Years of experience has given me a workflow (with a lot of absolute clunkers along the way, mind you!) that lets me have a process where I know what will happen to a mix once I put certain effects on there. I usually have at least a mastering limiter strapped over the master out because I know that the mix will be slammed later, and likely some kind of stereo widening. These won't be the final effects, but there as a way to hear how certain level and panning adjustments will react at the end once I start tuning things properly. The key for me is to have great reference material of the same ballpark style on hand. Give yourself sanity checks during the mix by referring to the stuff you're comparing it to - it's easy to get caught up in "your" sound, until you realise your ears are playing tricks on you and "your" sound changed many revisions ago, and will sound weird when you put it up against other commercial mixes. Get your mix sounding good, then when you start strapping over your mastering effects, you want to set up a final metering buss (ie: a buss with some kind of metering plugin that lets you check RMS, LUFS, phase, frequency spectrum, etc.) so you can see what your mix/master is doing, and then actually import in your reference tracks and send them directly to the meters, so you can easily switch between your master buss, and each reference track, and you can take note of how different the levels are, is there any frequency that's really popping out, etc. Where this is good is you're able to go back and make proper fine tuning in the mix itself immediately, rather than trying to fix things in the master. It's easy enough to drop 85hz on your master if you're getting too much subs, but what is that taking out? Maybe it's just your kick drum that's too thuddy but your bass sounds fine? Cutting everything at the master is nuking both things from orbit, rather than going and fixing the actual problem, and doing it all in the one process is much quicker than going back to a mix, making adjustments, reimporting back into a master session, etc. Once you have the one track mastered and sounding great, you now have YOUR sound to master the rest of the album to. Even if each song is different, sonically they should all kind of sound like a coherent piece, so using the level and EQ plot from one of your own songs will definitely go a long way to getting you there for all of the others, even if you may likely need to tweak further for each one. Eventually this will give you the full album. If you're like Craig and have like a long continuous thing going, drag all of those mastered files back into CbB and do all of your fades, etc. (it's worth putting a limiter on the master buss again just to make sure any crossfades don't accidentally put you over FS if you're doing a particularly loud master), and that'll give you one big WAV file. Import that into CD Architect, Studio One, etc. and start chopping up and adding track markers, etc. (Or if it's all separate songs, skip that step and just import each one in individually). Add your UPC/EAN and ISRC, CD Text, etc. if you want to get your distro happening properly, and you're away! Then go off and check it on EVERYTHING! Before too long, you'll either be happy or sick of it... and it's done! ... TL;DR version: do it somewhere else, but if you don't, use reference tracks and meters. Could have just said that in the first place, dude! 🙄

  9. The tools have been completely rewritten. All have font support, light and dark styles. Upsample Editor now supports in table edits. VST Inventory has selectable columns. Old Launchpad users make sure to copy "CbB Tools.exe" into the old Launchpad folder. Others may copy the "CbB Tools.exe" where ever they like such as "C:\Program Files\CbB Tools" I will leave the old versions available as the new ones no longer support 32bit SONAR. I added font size selection to a few of my CbB/SONAR utilities. There are updated versions of Launchpad - an alternative to the start screen Plug-in Upsample Editor - a tool to manage upsample data in Aud.ini Tools Editor - a program to manage the tools section of the Utility menu available here along with a few other CbB/SONAR related things. The utilities are about half way down the page. As always, if there are questions or issues with anything on the page just let me know. For best performance, whitelist the "CbB Tools.exe" process in your antivirus software. Inventory Tool really benefits from whitelisting. 11. So here’s my first and quite possibly last Light Theme for Cakewalk, as I much prefer dark themes I find it more difficult to make a light theme, so all I can do is hope the light theme likers like it cause I don’t, lol. Many greys and whites have been inspired by those of the metal ‘Titanium’, many colors have been used from my previous M-Lux Blue Theme except those I’ve had to change due to incompatibility with a light theme. Most other backgrounds, buttons, knobs etc are also from my previous theme but most with modification to match a light theme. Enjoy! (Hopefully) :~} Free Download Here.... M-Titanium Cakewalk Theme A combined total of around 150 hours, sometimes much more, goes in to creating each Theme I make, then there's more time spent to update them whenever BandLab makes changes or additions to the Cakewalk GUI to ensure any changed or new items display correctly and match the Theme, I also don't make all these Themes for myself, it's more of a hobby and to share the end results with the Cakewalk Community for their use and enjoyment at no charge, Any Tips/Donations via the following link for my time and efforts in creating and updating these are greatly appreciated, however small. Thank You! ❤️ https://www.paypal.me/MatthewJohnWhite

  12. About 6 or 7 years ago, I wrote this song and posted it on the old song forum. Since then, I upgraded my studio's mixing capabilities with both hardware and software, and gained much knowledge from you guys in regard to mixing and producing. So, I decided to remix this song because the message is still timely. I cleaned up much of the "mud" in the low frequencies and added a light touch of delay and reverb to the bass drum to give it depth. I also cleaned up the guitars for better definition, as some people had mentioned this. I hope you all enjoy this, the product of your suggestions. Thanks to all who have helped in the past, and to those who help me now. I'm still open to suggestions with this, so fire away. It can be found here:

  16. Hi, I just sent a message to the magazine after I noticed they were doing these features. It took quite some time before I got my feature. The interview questions were emailed over after a short dialog between myself and the magazine. I've had professional photos taken for my website so I just sent these in.

  19. As reported on another thread my Latency problems have been resolved by reinstalling 1903. I reverted to a Macrium Reflect disc image I made before upgrading and then downloaded/installed 1903 again. All seems well with the second install. I've ran Resplendence Latency Mon for over 10 minutes and no hits.

  20. Well done mate, a real improvement from the original. Still think that lead guitar should have been move a little to the center with a touch more guts. As far as the lyrics go ... bloody great and you know from old I'm a lyrics lover so .... Vid has a message that smoothly integrates with the work without losing the thread, nice touch, must have taken a lot of thought, a n d time so all good there. Vocal work seems supa pro and the harmonies are right on the money ( Still feel a bit of Joe Walsh in there ). For me (listened on cans) the mix is correct ... I'm thinking it's one of your best songs Stay well Steve

  25. To summarize: You don't need a dongle or an iLok account on your computer to install this. Once you buy another product at PluginBoutique, the Proximity EQ serial number will be in your account, along with a download link. Just install and start the plugin in your DAW. It will ask for the serial, you paste it in and you are good to go. Sonible just offers the option of using iLok, if that is of benefit to you.

  26. So do I. : ) I don't hear much about it, but I just love playing around with Ultra Analog. And Chromaphone is really nice, along with String Studio. What surprised me was Strum GS2. I did the RTM thing and was really wow' d when I found out, and actually was able to get it to strum just like I wanted!! It has a lot of "strum" midi file already with it and they can be manipulated as you pleased. Like I said, I was really surprised. And I am a guitar player, not a keyboard player.

  27. I still do the two as separate processes. For me, mixing is about getting the best possible balance of all the tracks; I use no processors in the master bus, only individual tracks. I then bounce within the program to create a stereo mix of that balance, which I peak normalize. (Of course, saying that means self-proclaimed "pro" mastering engineers will tell you I'm clueless, giving bad advice, and should have my mastering engineer license revoked. But with LUFS, times have changed.) The mixed tracks then go into Studio One's Project Page. I check the LUFS reading for all the files to see where they stand, level-wise. They're typically pretty close, but I usually add a Waves L3 as an insert for each file, and adjust the amount of maximizing so they have the same perceived average level. I also check the RMS reading, True Peak, and LRA readings to see if there are any crazy disparities. Of course, ears are a part of this process, but remember that ears are much worse at discriminating small level variations compared to pitch variations. Some tracks may require a bit of EQ to match the others in terms of spectral balance. I sometimes use a spectrum analyzer to get a rough idea, but really, ears are by far the best test equipment for this. After everything sounds like a collection of songs, I export a file with all the songs. This is where the ears take over totally. I'll listen to the file for several days, at different times of the day, over different systems, in several contexts. This will help ferret out any level or tone issues that need to be addressed. If there are issues, I'll go back, make the modifications, and re-start the listening/evaluating process.

  30. I've been wondering what the logic is with image viewing on this forum. Like this one. This is the embedded image in the posting: Then I click on the image to get a better view: The image is still the same size, but in an "image only" popup view. Then I click the image with the zoom cursor, with hopes to zoom it bigger: Now the image opens in a tab of its own, but still the same size? Why? Have the original images already been this small, or does something happen to them? Just wonderin'.... -Pete

  32. JB-- I completely understand. My older mixes, (and sometimes not so old) make me not want to let anyone hear them. The one thing I can attest to is, the average listener (fan, etc) can't tell the difference between a good or bad mix. They just know if they like it or not. Yes, if the mix is really bad by everyone's standards, then the average listener is probably not going to like the track -- but here is the advice I've heard many times from pros all over -- never apologize for your work. That is just bad form and those negative comments end up being the listener's first impression of your track. What's my takeaway? I try to do better on my next track. Each one I try to do better than the last one. Over time, I can hear that my mixes are way better than they used to be. What else? Step away from your mixes for a while. Give them time to sit and go work on something else. You might be surprised when you do listen to them again that they weren't so bad after all. Q: "What's the best mix you've ever done?" A: "I don't know. I haven't done it yet!" Cheers!

  33. There is a 50MB per-user quota on image uploads. The forum resizes uploaded images to save space. Users should not upload full screen images. They are almost unreadable after being resized. Smaller images containing the necessary details would be better. Better still, to avoid the quota and image resizing entirely embed links to images. For this, I created an account http://imgur.com Linked images are displayed full size like this

  36. This is a huge trap as after saving a copy as MIDI, the current working file will be saved in the same format. It is easy to forget to manually save as the Normal format too, since the extension shown in the project's header and the file extension still shows up as *.CWP that means you can easily overwrite your project with a MIDI file with the CWP extension without realizing it, and only finding out afterwards when you've closed and reopened the project with no way to recover the original work.

  40. Yeah I see that however CbB has arbitrary clip automation envelopes, not a static gainstage like there. My point is its somewhat harder to apply to the waveform. If it was a simple gainstage we'd have done it a long time ago.

  42. Suggest starting here: https://discuss.cakewalk.com/index.php?/forum/35-tutorials/ Be sure not to miss this one! It may appear to start out rather simplistic, but bear with it as some important concepts are introduced. This is a good set of videos created for Sonar, and still applies to Cakewalk by Bandlab. Chapter 19 "MIDI Synths" covers inserting TTS-1 and routing MIDI data to it.
