  7. Well - let's take a step back, and examine your use of plugins in this project. There are some plugins made to be used during the MIXING phase of a project, and NOT for use during tracking/recording. Things like convoluted reverb plugins, or others that use a "look-ahead" type of processing to do their thing, REQUIRE a super large buffer to be able to process. You yourself mentioned that the Rice Krispies go away as soon as you power off or remove those plugins - that is a big clue, that tells you that one or more of your currently used plugins in the project are indeed needing a bigger buffer (ASIO Buffer Size if you are using ASIO driver mode). Unfortunately, if you adjust the buffer size too big during recording, then you have too much lag to really track properly. The solution to the above, IF that is what is happening, is to first try to identify which plugins are causing the crackles, and just until you finish the recording portion of your workflow, and move into mixing, power off those plugins, or temporarily swap them out for less consumptive plugins (like use a simple reverb instead of a convoluted reverb - just until you finish tracking). This way, you can keep your ASIO Buffer Size down to a size that lets you record without noticeable lag. Then, when you finish your recording of your tracks, and move to mixing, then jack up your ASIO Buffer Size to 1024 or even 2048, since a bit of lag prior to the project starting to play won't interfere with anything (since you aren't tracking at this point). The super large buffer size will then allow you to either power back on, or swap back in, the more consumptive plugins (like a convoluted reverb, etc.), and life will again be joyous in your project. I ALWAYS keep my ASIO Buffer Size at no more than 128 when recording, I can go lower, but often just let it be at that value, and I track with no lag issues. Then, when moving to mixing, I ALWAYS then jack up the ASIO Buffer Size to the 1024 or 2048 size I mentioned above, and THEN I can put in the more robust plugins, and still have no problems. Give the above a try, and post back, please. Bob Bone

  10. I'd also add it's not just about quantizing rhythm, but tempo. Tempo changes are crucial in helping a song breath. Check out this article for an analysis I did of tempo changes in a variety of songs, using CbB. The article also includes the "time traps" concept I wrote about in The Huge Book of Cakewalk by BandLab Tips, but applied to Studio One. I also did a second article about "feel," and how to restore feel with timing shifts - it's basically an article about "un-quantizing" quantized parts.

  11. Improving CbB means many things to all of us, whether it’s improving stability, adding new features or improving existing ones (audio editing is a big one by all accounts!). For others, improvement means increasing software reliability. It’s all critical, so we’re pleased to announce that the 2019.05 release brings a healthy dose of both new and improved - our top stories being support for ARA 2 and multi-clip slip stretching! On top of bringing lots of new functionality to life, the team put massive focus on bug fixing and improving the state of slip editing in general, addressing a multitude of long standing issues. We’re super excited about this one, folks! Features & Enhancements ARA 2 (Audio Random Access) plug-in support. ARA 2 provides tighter, more efficient app integration of next generation ARA plug-ins such as Melodyne 4, including sharing tracks, regions, selection, as well as other project settings Improved editing of ARA 2 regions with a shared view across all plug-in instances Multi-clip slip stretching (hold down CTRL+SHIFT, then drag any selected clip edge to stretch all selected clips, or use the Stretch tool) The global Timing tool has been renamed to Stretch tool The Gain knob in the Inspector controls either audio Input Gain or MIDI Velocity Offset for Instrument tracks, depending on whether the Audio tab or MIDI tab is selected Updated zplane élastique v3.3.0.23501 audio stretching and pitch shifting with bug fixes and performance enhancements The Stretch tool (available by right-clicking the Edit tool in the Control Bar) now works on multiple selected clips, and also supports lasso selection and time selection Bug Fixes Clip Properties Inspector shows incorrect M:B:T clip length (actual length + 1 measure) Step Record continues to record to the original track after you switch focus to another armed track Arpeggiator Rate control fails to update when the parameter is automated MIDI only projects are immediately marked as dirty on file open Accessing menu commands can unnecessarily mark a project as dirty Bounce to Clip(s) results in mono data if a clip envelope is selected; Bounce to Clip(s) is now unavailable if the selection does not contain MIDI or audio data Intermittent crash when opening projects Closing a project immediately after opening can cause a crash Staff view fails to persist on project load Opening lyrics view when transport is playing causes crash Slip editing allows clips to be made zero length Clip waveform sometimes disappears while slip stretching Waveform display in split audio clip appears to adjust crop when slip stretching Slip Stretching MIDI clip causes clip data to disappear Slip Stretching cropped MIDI clip causes clip data to change unexpectedly Undoing slip stretching of audio clips could sometimes not restore the clip to its original state Slip Stretching clip to max, then dragging in opposite direction causes clamp to fail After stretching a clip to the max 400%, releasing the mouse, then attempting to stretch the left edge further causes all stretching to get lost unexpectedly Drag copying an ARA Region FX clip to create a new clip can result in a crash Tracks still visible in Melodyne after deleting or freezing tracks with Region FX clips Melodyne UI doesn't show slip stretching preview while editing until mouse up Canceling from a slip edit or slip stretch doesn't restore ARA regions in Melodyne When slip stretching a Melodyne Region FX clip from the left side, Undo does not restore the Melodyne data to its original location Undoing a copied Melodyne clip leaves blobs visible in Melodyne Cropping a stretched Melodyne clip causes blobs to shift unexpectedly Melodyne does not update when changing clip start time or duration from Clip Inspector Melodyne doesn't show preview while dragging Melodyne Region FX clips Clip loses focus in Melodyne after dragging to a new track Latest release notes are here. 12. When making stems for music libraries it's very handy to use track folders, but they often want sub-catergories i.e. Guitars as the main stem but also Rhythm and Lead separately. Nested sub folders would make this very simple.

  13. A large amount of my time is editing audio and aligned midi synced tracks. I tend to work back and forth on each sometimes just a few notes worth at a time, sometimes chopping large clips. I think it would be huge improvement to work flow if we were able to lock horizontal scaling between the Track View for audio editing and the Piano Roll view for midi editing. I think I spend 50% of my editing time resizing views between PRV and TrackView.

  14. Edit: looks like all the instruments have gotten another update - see my other post below... When I went to check on Studio One I got notified about batch of Arturia v6 updates - Software Center v1.7.1.873 Date on Arturia site lists April 24th as release date. Analog Lab & various instruments updated seemed like a 1/2 dozen - for example B-3 v2 V 2.0.1 Improvements Improved smoothing of Drawbars when modulated or automated Improved the modulation range of Drawbar Modulators

  20. I own Volume 2 but for some reason their website only show an upgrade price from Summit Audio Grand Channel ($449). Don't think I'm getting a customized deal there. Good news is you no longer need Gobbler, they have their own installer. Bad news their own installer is alpha on Windows. It seemed to work for me and updated all my Volume 2 plugins (that were installed with Gobbler, which I've now uninstalled and will never bother with again). Doesn't seem to allow you any control over where things are installed though or what things. The help says it gets the locations from the system registry (which is always a crap shoot). You can also download individual installers (from the website or the new Softube Central app) and run those. Which might be better if you don't want the ProTools plugins/etc. Volume 3 adds four new plugins: Parallels, Harmonics, OTO Biscuit, and Transient Shaper. Will have to see what the actual upgrade price from Volume 2 is, but I may just pass. One nice thing the TSAR-1R reverb includes the ProChannel version if you are still using CbB/SONAR.

  23. Heads-up, SongKey Mk3 in VST2 form does not play well with Cakewalk, so be sure to install only the VST3 unless you have another host that needs the VST2. If you do, go into Plug-In Manager and exclude the VST2. As soon as I add the VST2 to an FX Rack, CbB throws up a dialog and says it's gonna exit. Not so with the VST3 version. I've let Hornet know.

  25. It sounded ominous and dark to me - aptly fitting your song title. I think it would fit nicely for a film score which needed a mood such as this. I picked up on the what sounded like breathing at the beginning and the end. Nicely done.

  26. I use Melodyne to help me get the best out of my vocals because I am not the best singer. And I want people to hear my songs. I have people that I work with that don't need pitch correction. But most do need timing correction. Between Melodyne and Audiosnap/stretching features of CbB, I have it all covered. I am of the opinion to get/record the best performace possible first. Then you work from there. And we all are extremely fortune to have all the amazing tools at our disposal.

  27. This is more likely the cause of both Sonar not shutting down AND the file handles not getting released. Are you using any 32 bit plugins under BitBridge? If so, try using JBridge instead and if necessary check the "Dirty Close" option to force it to close down. Also, check your plugins are up to date. I had exactly this issue a while back with TH-U causing Cakewalk not to shutdown. Upgrading to the latest version of TH-U fixed it (actually, thinking about it, this might have been the cause of the incident I mentioned in my previous post). If you do suspect a plugin: Open the smallest project that exhibits this issue and take a note of the plugins you've used. Reboot your PC Create a new project, adding them one by one, saving then closing down one plugin at a time. At some point you'll find out which plugin is stopping Sonar from closing, allowing you to investigate further. Finally, if you update a plugin, make sure you do a fresh VST scan.

  29. If Cakewalk closes (not in task manager) all file handles will be released. While the app is open its possible that a file could be still open if its still referenced in the clipboard. i.e. if a clip was copied you can close the project and still paste it into a newly opened project.

  32. Great looking studio! (I'm really exerting a lot of will-power not to comment on the lack of a lava lamp). Interesting theme on the first pic at the top. It almost looked like you had a UAD Dream Verb plug on both monitors because of the color. OK, the real reason I'm replying is because that is one awesome axe collection! Tell me they are Gibson's and Fender's please!! 😉

  36. 1. Added a Act Control Surface in Preferences 2. Set the I/O to be my Keylab 88 3. With the Act Window open I picked the Axiom 49 preset as that gave me the transport controls in the 4th row of the Act Configuration Window. 4. Used MIDI learn by Clicking on each of the ACT slots in turn and pressing the appropriate control on my Keylab-88. 5. Saved that as a preset in ACT.

  37. The VST3 specification/invention reminds me of the history of the Germanic languages. 1000 years ago the English, the Teutons, the Dutchmen and the Scandinavians could easily talk with each other, the languages were almost the same. Today there is a lot of misunderstanding! 😁 No, seriously the VST3 introduction created a lot of chaos and there is almost no benefit for the plugin users! With automatic installations that are different with each plugin provider the thing got even worse! I agree with Starship Krupa that I never ever noticed an advantage of the VST3 version of a plugin, on the contrary I had some VST3 plugins that didn't support proper property/preset saving. And that is also a risky thing with automatic VST2 to VST3 replacement in projects, does the property and preset handling really match for the plugins??? IMO, in the end we have to keep control of our (numerous) plugin installations, we have to know the folder organization and the scan paths for each DAW! It really does not help with install programs, that's why I decompose the exe installers with innounp.exe and install the plugins manually (and create a zip file for backup). Well, that works great for me, had no more issues and no more needless menu and app entries in Windows!!! 😉

  39. There are tens of thousands of first-rate freebies available for graphic design--fonts, photos, videos, backgrounds, web layouts, mockups, vectors, Photoshop brushes and actions, etc. One of the best examples is Creative Market. If you register there, they send you six great products every Monday. Expensive stuff. In some cases you will need products like Photoshop and Illustrator to use them, but not all. If people are interested in this I can dig around and look for some of my old links. I don't do much graphic design these days.

  40. You weren’t bringing me down. It’s common to have emotional highs and lows following major surgery, especially heart. I’ve had anxiety ++ and just putting up with it. I’ve had medication for it before so my GP has put me on a really low dose of an antidepressant and after just a few days I’m feeling much better. Phew! i think I’ve turned a corner and starting to appreciate some new found health.

  41. Hi, One feature that sets cakewalk by bandlab apart from other daws is the pro channel. This is such a great feature! Bandlab should take advantage of it. There should be some upgrades for the FX chain module. I would love to see an FX Chain 2.0 where you can add and delete more Buttons/controls and even metering (like gain reduction readouts for compression). So it would be possible to create your own little simplified GUI for a plugin that does not have a pc module. This way users could create pc modules for the plugins they like and own and even share them. And there should be a smaller FXchain like pc module. That module should look like one line of the console views effects bin. Just the name of the plugin with an on/off button. A simple space-saving line. One thing I miss desperately in cakewalk by bandlab is VCA faders. Yes, I know you there is this workaround with (quick)grouping things but it's not the same as having VCAs like in every other daw. VCAs speed up the workflow a lot. greets Kawi

  42. Another vote to add Visual Clip Gain as described in the above posts (i.e. visual gain applies to the entire clip). In addition, it would be nice to enhance the existing 'Apply Effect > Gain' with some real-time visual feedback. The "Process > Gain" is useful since it doesn't require splitting the audio into clips. For example: when leveling wayward vocal dynamics, splitting into many small clips can become cumbersome. Perhaps there's a way to combine both 'visual clip gain' and gain on a selected area of the audio. Although, this could be confusing and it's probably better to keep the two features separate.

  46. +1. I hope Cakewalk works on this. As it stands the current method reminds me of how fade ins/outs used to be-- the waveform didn't alter visually dynamically. But they fixed that and I hope they do the same for clip gain!

  47. Sorry, I attempted to edit but I was unable to. I meant to respond with Solo Override When you enable Solo Override on a track or bus, that track/bus will never be muted as a result of soloing any other track/bus. This is a very useful feature when you want to always hear a particular track regardless of which other tracks are soloed. For example, you may want to always hear the vocal track while you solo other instrument tracks. This can be accomplished easily by using Exclusive Solo mode (see Exclusive Solo mode) and enabling Solo Override on the vocal track. To enable/disable Solo Override Hold down the SHIFT key and click a track’s or bus’ Solo button . The Solo button is displayed as to indicate that Solo Override is enabled. Solo Override prevents the track or bus from being muted when other tracks or buses are soloed.
