  1. Choosing a quality cable is easy: Does it cost 10x what it should? Does it claim to be made from unobtainium? Have they removed all the oxygen from the metal? Using it is also a piece of cake: 😆

  7. Great article! Funny enough your previous suggestion had already led me to the power management and so far this seems to have resolved the issues. This is my first laptop so power management hadn't crossed my mind. Thanks again, Cheers!

  9. I looked closely at making my own cables but decided that for me it was ultimately cheaper to buy what i need. I use cables that don't crackle. I use the shortest cables reasonable for the task. I try not to walk on cables. I do have favorites. Regarding cabling, the best thing I've bought is a patch bay. This gives me easy access to everything. I love it. I plug mics into pres but most of the cabling into my interface always stays the same.

  12. Okay, sorry, I've been cooking lunch. No Becan, but a roast garlic chicken with roast potatoes, Kenya green beans, some leeks, gravy and a little bread sauce. A glass of chilled wine to wash it down. Burp! Pardon me. So, and I'm really going back a long time here, I did my electronics training, would you believe, back in '64 to '66! Yup, I'm an oldie, 70+. I've used StudioSpares before, but a long time ago, they were good back then, but that's maybe 15 years ago. Basically, according to those specifications, any standard decent balanced cable should do. More specifically ... The output of the OCTA-Capture is TRS according to the pictures and the spec you quoted. Input of the Tannoys, again balanced, a combined jack means it usually has a TRS socket contained within an XLR socket. So an XLR with a large hole in the middle. Both output and input measured at 0dBu. dBu is a professional way of measuring signal level into an electrical load of 600 Ohms impedance. The important thing is that they match. It's normal to have a lower impedance output (in this case 1.8 k Ohms) driving a higher impedance input (32 k Ohms). So that's all good. So you can go TRS to XLR lead or TRS to TRS lead. Check that I'm correct about the combined XLR/TRS combined socket on the Tannoys. Radiospares call their TRS to TRS "Stereo leads", "cables" are without terminating plugs. My own choice would probably be one of their "Pro" range e.g. https://www.studiospares.com/Cables-Leads/Leads-Jack/Pro-Neutrik-Balanced--Stereo-Jack-Lead-5m-Black_579320.htm That's five metres I think, but double check the sockets first, okay? A cable like that should last a lifetime depending how much traffic/footfall it gets across it. JohnG. P.S. Check Radiospares Ts & Cs to see whether if you get a dry joint they'll quickly replace the lead. (it happens, rarely, even with the very best soldered connectors.)

  14. No, 600 Ohms is the characteristic impedance of the load that a pro audio cable, e.g. XLR to XLR or TRS, is working into. The cable itself is a very much lower resistance than 600 Ohms. Resistance and capaitance change as the length of the cable increases, and hence impedance. Take a look at Thomann in Germany under the tag PA. They have their own sssnake cables and snake pro. They advertise in English too. When I lived there I bought a few snake pro cables, as far as I recall they used Neutrik connectors, unsure now. But with all/most of the cables they sell you'll find there are two grades. The more expensive ones, of the ones I bought, were definitely better quality. I did try a few brands and all of the slightly more costly versions were well made. Never spent a fortune. The cable itself felt better made, the connectors were quality not flimsy. Gold plating of the plugs is too soft if you're connecting disconnecting often and only any good if the socket is gold plated too. Quality nickel is the thing, hard as hell.

  16. The simple key to understanding this is that low impedance to low impedance there is a significant current flow, this can lead to distortion. (N.B. simple) Low to hi means that it's predominantly a voltage flow. Pre-amps are primarily built to allow sufficient headroom over the normal voltage generated. It doesn't matter how loud the sound is it's about the underlying electronics design. Ribbons are low impedance like pickup coils so it's not unusual to have a guitar pre-amp impedance up at 1 MegOhm. Any help?

  17. The quality of cables is, at least to me, about quality of materials and connectors. e.g. copper quality and thickness plus number of strands in each conductor, if shielded the density of the shield, braided or wound, the construction of the plug and thickness of the nickel plating on the mating parts. (Sorry) Also impedance and capacitance of the cable make a slight difference. So the type of insulation used can make a small difference. Then there's their application whether they're intended for +4dBu or -10dBV use (pro 600 ohm impedance or domestic use), balanced or unbalanced. The latter is decided by the electronics both at the driving and receiving ends of the signal. The cable should match the electronics. Yes, Neutrik make excellent plugs and sockets in my experience. Many cable suppliers use Neutrik connectors in their offerings.

  18. I agree with James about the full-on start from the get-go. Might build it a little. Vocal clarity needs a bit of help - I think that excellent phaser flangey guitar is masking the vocals. And your vocals have gobs of treatment on them. Might look at some different pannng, or better yet, if you haven't already, cut an eq dip in the guitar where you want to poke the vocal through. Something like that. When the guitar solo comes in, really really sweet!!! Now this is how you groove with a Pict! Loved it. __- - -- the second song, that acoustic guitar is really bright, and the vocals are doubled with delay? I'd knock some upper 6 - 10khz eq out of that guitar and that might help vocal clarity. --- third song, like that groove and the guitar lines. Drums are a little buried on this. Turn 'em up a tad maybe? Very very tasty lead guitar choices. I didn't like how it ended abruptly so the UFO's could come in. Q- why is this a blend of songs, as opposed to giving each one a life of its own? I'm sure you have your reasons . . . just a thought. Overall it's an ambitious collection of seriously good tunes, just needs some mix polish. Your vocals sound good, just maybe less goop on them and turn them up a little. cheers, -Tom

  20. I use the smart tool almost exclusively. To make multiple selections with the smart tool - after the initial selection (right-click+drag to lasso with the smart tool), hold the CTRL key and repeat the right-click+drag to lasso more notes. Here is a small video - after the initial selection the CTRL key is held the rest of the time to select and deselect notes across two clips.

  21. Got tired of chrome putting pressure on my cpu and make my pc fans speed up and sound like a jetplane for long periods. Renamed a file and that worked for a day until chrome magically renamed it back. Now i'm using Firefox. Nice, quiet and adfree. Imported bookmarks and saved passwords from chrome and a little bit to my surprise Firefox have no problems logging in to my sites or viewing videos and listening to audio. I highly recommend Firefox. PS. Hm..it seems i remember it wrong. You probably can't import/export passwords.

  24. I see the balanced cable as a fix to the problem. The balanced circuit and cable still gets noise, but the signal gets inverted on one wire before the cable, and then re-inverted after the cable. The hum interference is induced in both wires during the cable run and when the sum is re-inverted at the end the signal is strengthened and the hum cancels itself out. That's simplified, and I don't know if I'm explaining it in a way that's easy to understand. The important thing to know is that if a balanced option is offered by your gear, use it. 27. I have experimented with this, and, yes, it certainly does solve the problem, but while I have equipment that is supposed to be grounded I am quite nervous about disconnecting any grounding connections. In this country our residual current breakers rely on that ground to trigger and make the situation safe.

  28. Not if you start your project with one of the many handy templates in the Start Screen. You do when starting a project completely blank, but that is what I call doing it the hard way. If you're new to Cakewalk, don't do it the hard way. Even (especially) if you're not, don't do it the hard way. As far as Buses being visible in the Track View, you have to click on the little arrow down at the bottom of the Track Headers.

  29. Yeah, Chuck, that is one of the things that I have noticed... I also noticed that if I position the guitar at right angles to the video monitor any interference pretty much goes away, and being further away from the video monitor also helps.

  36. The && operator only works on two expressions, which is why they're nested, as there's 3 conditions: So if you change "(&& (== Note.Vel 0) (== Note.Dur 0))" to "(== Note.Dur 0)", it should pick out all notes of a duration of zero. You still need the (== Event.Kind NOTE) as you only want it to affect notes. So the adjusted code would look like: (forEachEvent (if (&& (== Event.Kind NOTE) (== Note.Dur 0)) (delete) ) )

  38. Current setup: I need to redesign the whole top of part of my studio desk. I'll be removing the 2nd Mackie C4, and adding a Yamaha 01X and Alice 828... and I still need to find somewhere to put my GA Pre 73 & Joemeek preamps. And at some point I need a decent electronic kit, rather than my DIY one.
