  5. If your machine has Thunderbolt-3, ~$600 would get you into Quantum-2. Quantum can get RTL down to 1ms. If you need to go USB and want something simple, have a look at the Audient ID14 (~$299). Best fidelity you'll find at that cost (Burr-Brown Converters) Round-trip latency is ~5ms at a 64-sample ASIO buffer size 44.1k To achieve better than ~5ms total round-trip latency with a USB audio interface, you're looking at RME or MOTU (recent AVB series and spin-offs). Either of those will get you down to just under 4ms RTL.

  8. It would be cool if Patch Browser would open directly from the track header pane and not only from the Inspector because Patch Browser has the search textbox to help selecting sounds.

  11. Unfortunately, there are no "language police" in the audio industry to make sure everyone's on the same page. And then there are terms like "loop": A piece of repeating audio A sustaining region in a sample Live looping Patching in a daisy-chain fashion And then manufacturers like to choose different words for the same thing, I guess just to appear different...

  12. Sometimes, you just need a really specific type of sound in one of your compositions. Or maybe sometimes you just need something cool or unique to inspire you. There are around 70 different award-winning Kontakt libraries on the Audio Plugin Deals store right now, so perhaps we can help you find what you’re looking for! 13. This caught my eye "It's working properly in Sonar Platinum (just tested)." We were having completely different issues to you with projects becoming corrupt and missing audio error messages. Strangely all the project files which open with errors in CbB open perfectly in Sonar Platinum for us also, just like they do for you. You may have tried this but here goes. Deselect all your midi devices from CbB in Midi preferences, close CbB, physically unplug all your midi devices from the PC, plug them back in and restart CbB, Add them back in by selecting them.

  15. Hi @Gswitz, Yeah, I have an Arturia Keystep which I can either connect to my DAW via USB or MIDI. Then there is my OB-12 hardware synth. I also have an Acorn Masterkey 49. Trouble is, I'm having my own issues with synchronising stuff at the moment so I'm using step sequencer to create simple patterns so I can test things out, so I can't say whether or not they work with Cakewalk yet. They certainly worked okay with REAPER and Studio One. cheers andy

  19. This is hilarious Bjorn! Really enjoyed the lyrics and perspective. It see ms OVEr de-essd to me. Don't fear the ESS so much you eliminate the high end from your consonants. If you're capturing too much sibiliance at the source, then try-- 1. a different mic 2. backing up from the capsule (could be causing over-emphasis of the sibilance) 3. eating a green apple/drinking some water before your singing some session! 4. all of the above 5. tell yourself, "Aaah, I'm retired!" I'd watch the phrasing. Especially with a spoken (as opposed to sung) delivery and such conversational lyrics, I'd pay careful attention to phrasing the words how they would appear in conversation. There are a few examples here, but the one at hand is -- "I STAY at home, I OBserve the scene" which, when spoken, would be "I obSERve the scene." Phrasing it how you'd speak it preserves the meaning even on casual listening. (The worst financially successful example of this IMHO is the Fleetwood Mac song "Go Your Own Way" the chorus of which has a second line where I can barely believe they're singing the words written down on the lyrics sheet. Makes for some odd listening, to me anyway!) A fun song. Do you ever play these ditties in public by any chance? I think this one would go over great.

  20. Also, as mentioned above, you could be clipping your preamp even if you're not clipping the digital input. Are you recording with a board or external pre?

  21. If you're a real belter, then the capsule itself could be the culprit. Even that truly unpleasant cheap condenser Sss sound is a type of high-frequency distortion from the capsule and mic circuit.

  22. Sorry to hear that. I get it with a few patches on occasion if I use a lot of polyphony (high voice count). Iris can get CPU hungry. There is a section in the user guide on pages 70-72 that covers CPU optimization for some ways to minimize that. Things like freezing tracks, hiding the Iris UI, increasing your audio buffer size, avoiding the most intensive filters, lowering the voice count, reducing envelope release times, and reducing the resampling distance from the original pitch of the samples, etc. And last, but not least, they do mention that streaming samples from a SSD offers optimum performance.

  23. That means there's a feedback loop somewhere. Check your PC's mixer. It's probably set to Record What You Hear or something similar. Sorry I can't be more specific, the computer I'm using doesn't have an internal sound chip.

  24. Thanks for all the info, Jim. I have also read that latency on the first generation Ryzen processors is a lot worse than Intel CPUs. Apparently the 2nd gen (2000 series) chips are significantly better. No news yet on the upcoming 3000 (Ryzen 2) chips. Given that Thunderbolt is an exclusively Intel technology, I think my DAW experiment with AMD is over and I'll be building an Intel-based DAW next time with good Thunderbolt support and look at one of the newer MOTU AVB interfaces.

  26. FWIW, That DPC Latency is unfortunately on the very high side. Working at low-latency isn't going to happen without glitches. Even working at mid latency settings is going to be tough when DPC Latency is upwards of 1000uSec. Peak DPC Latency for a Clevo shell laptop should be ~200uSec.

  27. Maybe I shouldn't complain too loudly. I only have the free Computer Music mag covermount "Thorn CM" - yet I've had an email from PA telling me I'm entitled to the upgrade for $19, and I have my $25 Feb PA voucher. I think I just melted my keyboard with how fast I did that "buy".

  30. I've never heard of the original or the artist, but this is coming across very well indeed on the lappy speakers, which is something I never seem able to manage to do. As has been mentioned the vid is rather distracting because of the constant re-focusing, but other than that it's all good. In fact I could go as far to say as it's the best thing I've heard in these parts in a long while.

  32. To me stems are groups of tracks not single tracks. There is no need for the term if all it means is the same as tracks. My understanding is it comes from the movie industry where FX which are sounds to give a better notion of the scene. Foot steps or putting in the sound of a gun shot. Real guns have a sharp sound not the sound you hear in movies. Then there is dialog and background music. Often these sounds are made of various tracks for each individual sound. Combining like sounds together makes a stem. We in audio think in terms of buses. Not so much about stems. I think it could be because some don't think in terms of grouping tracks to buses. Many times people just output their tracks to the main outs directly. If there is a bus it for a send. I've noticed a trend toward using this term instead of buses. It confuses the issues for me.

  33. Take care of yourself Mike. I always like that you were very level headed on the forum and your responses were helpful. But your health is most important. I lost parents and a sibling in the span of 362 days. Really hits you hard so do take care of yourself.

  34. I feel your pain, man. I have lost three siblings and four childhood friends in the past 5 years. Plus two cats well advanced in years, who I was closer to than any of the people. But where there's life, there's hope.

  35. Thanks for the expressions of support guys. I don’t have the temperament to deal with internet crap anymore. In the last several years I’ve suffered the loss of several close family members, and personal health issues including severe depression. At times the forum community was all that kept me sane and at other times the desire to be a part of everything and stay involved was so overwhelming that I had to withdraw for periods. Anyway that’s what was.

  36. Digital Performer has some weird terminology that I have difficulty with. The routing matrix for audio & midi ins & outs is called the Bundles Window. The sequencing matrix is called the Chunks Window. Clips/regions are called soundbites. That one actually makes sense.

  38. Since the big panic as someone called it, I’ve continued to be a multi DAW user just as before. I used the crazy offers made at the time to add Cubase Pro to my collection. Despite having all the major DAWs I still gravitate to CbB. The major change for me is that nowadays I only read this forum occasionally and comment even less.

  40. Honestly, time is a precious resource. I'd much rather they distribute a PDF user guide so that we can search and view while on the go. I'd much rather read the manual while I'm riding shotgun or between sessions at the training center than waste hours of my time watching YouTube videos. Not having a PDF manual, at least the old Sonar Platinum manual with the obvious caveat that some things may differ, is awful. I have time in between activities while out and about, but I'm definitely not going to sit in front of YouTube and waste that much time. I want an actual PDF user guide.

  41. Thank you for the advice. Here's another bottom line: I got up this morning to continue arranging piano, and my setup didn't work. All I did was change the track settings for the V49 to something else and back again, and it worked. Same thing often happens with the arm record button on a track. I have to turn it off and back on again. It's like women. You have to keep telling them that you love them, otherwise they forget.

  43. If you've ever played a synth with distortion on the sound... and played in the higher registers, you've most likely heard aliasing. It's a very digital/grainy/phasey type sound... that doesn't sound like part of the rest of the audio. You can run a low-pass filter to reduce/eliminate aliasing, but that may impact the desired sound. On a guitar cab, there's not a whole lot above ~7.5kHz, so it's easier to filter out than on something that has more high-frequency content (like a saw-tooth synth).

  44. I've always worked doing audio for video so 48k for me. In the old days 48k synced to picture more accurately with less drift. I wonder if that is still true. I use to be able to hear the difference between 44.1 and 48. If I had heard the program a million times, hours on end (while working on the project intently) and with good monitors I was familiar with. I could detect a slight difference. Again that was 20-25+ years ago when digital was getting going and I wonder if it is still possible to hear the difference today. I doubt my ears work any where near as well and I'm not willing to put in the effort to find out. So can anyone hear the difference between 44.1 and 48 these days?

  45. I see another exit is to add “Fold” button. In Ableton Live we have a drum rack which adds sampler on some notes. So we have 36 with bass drum and 38 with a Snare. Then we’ve left 37 untouched with no sample on this pad. After opening piano roll in Live we can press Fold and all pads with no samples are gone and we can only see pads and notes which we’ll be using. Also, renaming notes in Reaper is very easy and fast. Would like to see the same things in Cakewalk.
