  1. I thought this is the outstanding deal today. The Greg Wells Signature is already cheap at the moment, but with the TODAY50 code it becomes ridiculous. $22.54 for MixCentric, PianoCentric, ToneCentric and VoiceCentric. They're all nice plugs. If I didn't have them already, I'd buy. Also worth mentioning that with the TODAY50 code, CLA MixHub is $30.79 which is cheap for a brand new plugin. But I'm not sure it will suit how I work.

  2. When it comes to DAW related advice: I've been around since the days when the Cakewalk "forums" (News Groups back then) were on CompuServe. Few folks have accumulated more hours/experience building/supporting DAWs. There's nothing I post that can be construed as bad advice... or that's going to leave someone stuck/non-functional. Folks contact me on a daily basis to avoid/eliminate issues. With the right set-up, software-based monitoring is practical/usable in the here/now. It takes the right audio interface, it takes a fast machine, and it helps if the software has Hybrid Buffering For me, having ultra low latency makes all processes more enjoyable. Playing virtual-instruments - timing/response is tight Triggering drum samples - timing/response is tight Playing/monitoring in realtime thru AmpSim plugins - timing/response is tight With such low latency, you've got the feel of hardware-based monitoring... with all the flexibility of software-based monitoring.

  3. Hired Gun is a move documentary about what it takes to become a top level in demand musician for hire . An elite group of "First Call, A-List" musicians share their incredible behind-the-scenes stories of touring, what it takes to play next to the world’s most iconic musicians, and create some of the world's most popular songs. I just got done watching this film and I have to say wow . This movie was a must see for me . I'm here to share and put the word out for anyone who hasn't seen or heard of it. I got the copy I watched from my library and I know this movie is listed on Netflix ...where else I do not know ...great stories great playing and a very sobering look at the bizz from the players that have lived it . Here's a couple of u tubes trailers for those who want to know more . Last but not least , here is a link to an article titled 10 quotes from Hired Gun . The web page contains a few more videos . https://www.inc.com/jeff-haden/10-quotes-from-hired-gun-that-show-just-how-much-freelancers-rock-stars-have-in-common.html all the best Kenny

  4. Depending on the song, style, and length of note, I've used a freebie from meldaproduction.com called MVibrato that may give you what you want. As you pointed out, it's best to use an automation curve to get the rise in vibrato just right which can easily be achieved by using write mode when playing back and manually manipulating the level of the vst. Once this is done, you can rewrite the curve any way you want in the automation view. I'm sure there are any number of tremelos or vibratos out there, usually free and found at KVR. Good luck.

  6. If you can get a good deal on it, I'd go with the i9-9900k (8 cores, 16 processing threads). All cores can be locked at 5GHz. With the right cooler, it runs near dead silent. Regarding Asus vs. Gigabyte, the answer is "yes". 😉 We've used many Z370/Z390 motherboards from both... all with reliable performance. Get the board that has the features you want.

  9. Jim doesn't deserve the patronizing. (Doesn't need my defense, just thought I'd tell you tho). All of the old-schoolers around here use real-time monitoring when appropriate, but there are cases for through DAW monitoring. If you use your imagination a little, you could think of a few. 🙂 Many of the things you said are true. - Real-Time monitoring is cheap and easy and incredibly effective for lots of things. - Inexpensive interfaces can include fx processing like verb, eq and compression (I have made videos on how to do real-time parallel compression with an RME UCX). - Lots of other equipment matters like Mics, pre-amps and instruments. - Musicianship matters and when the musicians can hear themselves sounding great they'll perform better. None of this discounts the huge value of a good low-latency interface. There are just tons of great things you can do with computers and it is possible to have a reasonably priced computer and interface that makes it all possible. Jim knows more than most about how to make this fun happy world a reality for many people who were not able to achieve this on their own. It sucks to be the old guy who's mad at his computer for ... So much better to be the old guy whose computer enables wild new adventures.

  10. Again, thank you all so much. Your sentiments are all very thoughtful and much appreciated. I just found out that there will be an honor guard from the Navy and from the fire dept. as well at his funeral. I won't be able to hold it together when they play Taps and fire the salute. He deserves the honors though. Thanks again guys.

  14. I just wanted to post this tribute to my Dad. He passed away Monday, February 4, 2019 at 2:45am. He was 77. He served aboard the USS Intrepid CV-11 aircraft carrier from 1959-1963. He was involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis, and was also involved in retrieving astronaut Scott Carpenter when he returned to Earth. After that, he was a firefighter for 33 years, retiring in 2000, after suffering back injuries from falling through one too many roofs. He was a true hero, and I miss him terribly. Thanks for letting me post this. I love you, Dad.

  19. I'm an Asus guy. Had a Gigabyte MB way back. I think that brand does not say that much anymore. Everyone fallows the standards pretty well. I know Gigabyte had problems overclocking theirs x99 line way back. So, I picked up Asus because of that. I didn’t overclock tho.

  21. So, one person asks a question like "why is CbB free?" and it results in 8 pages (so far) of responses and discussions. This happens so much that I really believe that some of you must have an insecure feeling that Meng and company are just going to someday soon come along and pull the rug out from this whole thing and we will all be without this program. Do some of us doubt Meng or Noel? Even the guy at NAMM said something like it will be free FOREVER!! Is the old saying "If something seems to be too good to be true, it probably is" creeping through some of our minds? Don't you trust them? I do. Stop worrying and enjoy making music! 😉John B

  26. It's been a few years since I built a new system, but the last 4 or 5 computers I've assembled (including my last couple of audio workstations, gaming computers for myself and my sons, and my home theatre PC), all use Gigabyte mobos. I've used Asus in the past, but for whatever reason, I've had poor luck with them -- early demises, stability problems, etc. That's all very anecdotal, and maybe just bad luck, as I have friends who swear by Asus and use nothing else. But I've had much better luck with Gigabyte mobos, FWIW, and they are now the only brand I will use. YMMV

  31. Apologies if Jim thought I was being patronizing, that was not my intent, and he hasn't complained about that anyway. Gswitz, you claim I am being patronizing and then go on to be...patronizing. you say yourself that Jim doesn't need your defense and I agree. My imagination is just fine thank you. I was pointing out that his needs seemed to center around amp sims and I and people in my position have different needs, both are valid positions, just different. I don't agree with some of the things Jim said and that wont change but each to their own I guess. He is pushing his new Quantum interface with software only monitoring and me, well you will have to prize my hardware monitoring out of my cold dead hands. Saying things like software monitoring renders hardware monitoring moot is not correct. This sounds like manufacturer marketing hype to me. I've heard it many times before and it just isn't that simple, so many other things to consider. I don't like to see people going down the long road I went on before I realized what was best for me, this may have some relevance to others who's needs are the same as mine and they can shortcut some of the pain I went through with this advice. I have repeatedly said this advice is for people who's needs are like mine. The advice I have given I believe is valid to those in my position, especially those starting out who might read this forum, this is a new forum with plenty of new people joining to use Cakewalk, for many, this may be their first encounter with a DAW. There are lots of marketing gimmicks out there in audio land that promise the world and then you find yourself with an empty wallet and like a dog chasing its tail to get to audio nirvana. That's why forums like this are so valuable, people can take the advice that suits them. So I'll leave it at that.

  32. I used to have some really nice speakers (for the day - the usual one cabinet with subwoofer, midrange and tweeter). I did a neat trick with them instead of the usual method of putting them on the ground with the subwoofer at the bottom. I hung them on the walls upside down which gave the music a lot more definition. When the first CD's came out I immediately bought a player and a few selections. The very first one was such a drastic improvement that my 2,000+ albums were put up for sale the next week!

  33. I think it would definitely be more fair to pay based on airtime than by the song however, to prevent every song from going on forever, maybe something like a flat amount per song than something based on time up to a cutoff like six minutes.

  34. @Jim Roseberry: Yeah - in the IT world (Windows Servers and such), "effective permissions" means: the permissions of the selected user or group would be "this" if these permissions were put in place. In other words, "effective" means "in the real world" or "practically", where in this example, it means nearly the exact opposite - like, "if there were NO other factors in place, the latency would be 1.5ms, but of course there ARE other factors in place all the time, so just ignore my effective ineffectiveness" - or something like that Thanks for your feedback. Glad to see that you feel like the Quantum IS actually the real deal. I'm still keeping it on the list of possible purchases for some time that isn't now.

  35. I'll never forget the first time I heard PFDSOTM on CD. The first thing I heard was a faint sound of a heartbeat, that slowly came into focus. Not the crackle and rolling sound of a needle running through grooves imprinted in vinyl, or the steady hiss of graphite against a tape head!! I wrote a song about the debate of vinyl/CD. And as much as I loved albums, give me CD any day.

  37. It's kind of a superfluous option. For the most part, CbB does not allow same-lane overlaps, but there are some bugs that will let it happen, and you'll see more of them if you don' keep that option checked.

  38. It's not the same compensation as for external audio input, but there is a bug that causes soft synth audio to be laid down early by exactly one ASIO buffer when the synth is driven by existing MIDI in the project. (Note that the opposite problem occurs when recording a soft synth driven by live, real-time MIDI input, but is expected because the audio isn't compensated for MIDI latency or the fact that the audio you're playing along with is delayed by output latency). Workarounds are: - Set a very small ASIO buffer (e.g. 32 samples), and ignore the error. - Freeze or Bounce to Track instead of recording. - Put a send on the Synth track to an Aux track, and record on the Aux track which won't have the compensation mis-applied.

  43. Same thing here. Say I make one of the tracks invisible in Track View... then, every time i add a new track i have to save the project, close it and reopen it in order to see that track in the Tracks view, even if i set all tracks to be visible.

  44. True Larry Jones, they used to supply the full .exe file every update, now only when you first install you get it, then it's just updates, that's what I meant in my first post. So I guess it doesn't answer izikko's wish to download the full installer. The updates can only be installed over the previous generation as well. Apparently you cannot install say update 5 over an installation with update 3 on it, it has to have update 4. Exactly what happens if you do this, I don't know. I might find out since I have forgotten what update I last installed on my offline computer!
