  2. Back in the old forums there were statements made about the lack of videos made using Sonar suggesting its unpopularity. Well, there have been a plethora of quite recently uploaded video tutorials on YouTube using Cakewalk By BandLab. For any newbie coming into these forums asking questions, I think a sticky should be made of these videos which are very informative. Below are a few YouTube channels I've found. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwqZ0GPSfFgbc8gLCxaYngRGVvlaf57gI https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSfPaEe4wG_TxprjqVLxh9yAH-zGhA8bH https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDkWv3OTMpOHb2hMjuNWBQWyuhhIF6bHj https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLeySI9gLWqezjlplGQqTJyhrbvCvKdzTk

  4. AQUIVER delivers 300 powerful, deep and soaring granular sounds. It is powered by a custom granular engine that can play hundreds of small grains of audio with no huge CPU impact. AQUIVER is ideal for movie scoring, underscore and futuristic sound design. It features realtime recording of knob movements, a FX engine with bread-and-butter effects and a unique lock switch. Using that, you can skip through instruments while locking the current settings in place. Perfect for trying out different sounds without loosing current knob and/or effect settings. All the parameters of the effects section can be modulated in realtime with one knob as well. http://rigid-audio.com/products_aquiver.html

  5. Stems are audio tracks with all effects, automations, etc. printed into them. They're used so a mix can be re-created easily, but not a re-mix. They can be individual tracks or sub-mixes of more than one track.
    2 points
  6. As Craig said, the concept of "stems" or "stem files" most often means submixes, for example a vocal stem would be multiple vocal tracks submixed in a single WAV file. No magic, nothing special. Although I've seen in some interviews with (younger) mix engineers in Sound On Sound using the word "stems" when referring to individual audio tracks. I don't see the point in that - if you need the individual audio files for a project, ask for the individual audio files! If you need stems, ask for stems.

  9. The short answer to why it is free is that all core platform software from BandLab is free - thanks to Meng's vision to make a powerful platform available to everyone with no boundaries. As he indicated earlier, add on's to the platform such as plugins may not be free and of course BandLab also makes more traditional hardware and physical products . As far as Cakewalk goes our focus over the last year has been stability and workflow. We've made enormous strides in improving the software, optimizing it and even adding some powerful features that will benefit everyone. Looking back through all the prior releases notes it should be evident that we've delivered on this. If you have an old version of SONAR still on your PC load it up and compare it side by side to Cakewalk. I'm pretty sure you will feel a solid difference in doing normal operations such as loading projects, editing and mixing. I've got so many messages from users and even ex employees who can feel the difference. In addition to this we've also added several new features. So... use the software, be happy its free, make music

  13. Hi everyone, We had an amazing NAMM 2019 show and it was so great to meet so many long time Cakewalk users as well as our business partners there. BandLab had a a beautifully designed space showcasing all the brands and Cakewalk had a very prominent presence at the show. Here are a few pictures. We had stage performances from several artists showcasing all the BandLab brands throughout the day including Heritage guitars, Harmony amps and guitars, and Tiesco pedals. We had a mobile recording rig set up and Cakewalk was used to record all the performances. Ashwin from BandLab and @Mike Balzarini did a fantastic job on the live sound and recording setup at short notice and everyone commented on how great the performances sounded. We recorded 8 channels for all the sets and I would upload the projects at the end of the day for @Jon Sasor and @Jesse Jost to mix and upload the finished tracks to BandLab using the new Export to BandLab feature that we just added in CbB. Jon did an amazing job mixing and mastering these at short notice. To listen to all the great music recorded live check out our NAMM 2018 feed. Jesse also posted some more information about the artists playing. Thanks again to you all for your support and for all our users who took the trouble to come to NAMM and meet us. It was great listening to your feedback and meeting you face to face. PS: I forgot to mention. This year all the demo songs played at NAMM came from Cakewalk users. It was great showing real world production projects at the show. Some of these were were full projects with all the plugin's intact. The Silverlight tune had tons of Slate plugins as well as an MP4 video clip synced to it. It played with no problems even at 256 samples on a Surface Book. Also some NAMM Videos that Meng shared in another thread:

I had found an old photo album of when I was a baby and I saw the evidence with my own two eyes . My mama couldn't afford a proper Teddy Bear for me when I was a baby so she had gotten me a fluffy skunk called Pepe Le Pew instead of a Teddy Bear ....It hurts Man It HURTS ....my first nick name was Stinky and this whole experience seems to have scarred me for Life ....thankfully I found The Guitar and it has been all downhill ever since .

  21. Thanks for input, Jim, much appreciated. As I have sort of suggested above, CPU core balancing now appears to be my least concern. I don't want to go into too much details in this post. I am in the process of drafting a new post with regards to my complete setup, dreams and wishes and all that. I will also be posting my LatencyMon reports and screenshots. Not great reading but, surprisingly, DPC seems to be "reasonable." And you are right in that, it doesn't matter which DAW I am using. The big "but" here is, in all my years of posting in various forums, the Cakewalk/SONAR community has always been the biggest help. cheers, and thanks again, andy

  22. FWIW, If the machine is having issues such as high DPC Latency, it doesn't matter what DAW software/plugins you're running (all with be negatively affected). BTW, Unplugging the LAN port disconnects from the Internet... but it doesn't actually disable the LAN controller. ie: If the LAN controller's driver is causing high DPC Latency, simply unplugging the LAN port won't resolve it. You can update/roll-back the LAN driver... or disable it (Device Manager or motherboard's BIOS) while working with audio.

I recently got the chance to co produce and record this strikingly handsom fellas performance of "Who Stole My Boys I Know The Vet Has Done Me Wrong " Once the tracking was done I dialed in some of his suspicious bone chilling howls using Melodyne .. Also ran his piano playing through the Pro Channel while addin a touch of Breverb . Overall the session worked out Great when he was not licking the spots where his Lost Boys used to hang out ... 28. 50% off Image Line Toxic Biohazard, now $39 instead $79 >> $34.71 in cart with code FORUM https://www.jrrshop.com/image-line-toxic-biohazard I don't own this (I have NI FM8) but it's supposed to be a very good FM synth. from JRR Shop web page: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Toxic Biohazard is the 4th generation in the line of Toxic synthesizers. Toxic Bio distills the best features from the previous 3 versions to deliver our most concentrated Toxic ever. Beware! Incorporating the best suggestions from our users, Toxic Biohazard includes following enhancements: Optimized engine Improved the sound quality, with even more accurate waveshapes, and quicker rendering times. "Physycal" envelopes (amplitude and filter) physical modelling of how sounds in real world decay & resonate, for example, the sound of a water drop. Further, physycal envelopes are rendered real-time without any interpolation, avoiding noise artifacts and allowing Toxic Bio to deliver fast, accurate envelope times. Pack of new effects: phaser, reverb, ... Toxic Biohazard features a hybrid synthesis engine, combining the best of FM and Subtractive synthesis. With the addition of a warm, analog-modeled filter and set of built-in effects, the Toxic concept remains one of convenience, simplicity, and superb sound quality. The FM technology One of the ‘warmest’, crisp, and clear Frequency Modulation engines in the world, owes its sound to the precise calculation of the digital signal. Due to high-resolution DSP processing, it produces sound with an extremely low noise threshold; something that most FM engines cannot offer. The Toxic Biohazard sound was built from the ground up, via our own unique mathematical calculations and analog-modeling techniques. The Oscillators Completely alias-free, and well tuned for all sampling rates, they produce a rich, "fat" sound all across the spectrum. Due to the high quality of the anti-aliasing process, users will not encounter the shredding noise on high frequencies that has plagued FM synthesis in the past. Furthermore, the oscillators are calculated at extremely high speeds, keeping your CPU usage to a minimum. Toxic’s low CPU consumption affords the user plenty of room for external processing and running multiple instances. The oscillators also come equipped with Maxx Claster’s own powerful spectrum analysis technology. This allows the user to create his or her own waveforms, via the simple process of loading a WAV or AIFF format sound file. All of these features make the oscillators very flexible, and allow for the use of both synthetic and acoustic waveforms within Toxic. Each oscillator also comes with 32 built in ‘classic’ waveforms, each shown to be the most useful in FM synthesis. The Effects Made to assure high quality and flexibility is built into the synthesizer its self, Toxic Biohazard aims to reduce the need for external processing altogether! The effect modules are designed to give the user access to several types of effects, from aggressive, tube-like distortion, to warm stereo delay, reverb, flanger, and phaser effects. With our own pro-quality tape delay emulation, based on non-fixed delay buffer sizes, instead of the usual methods incorporated within digital delays, our delay lines give you warm sound, with “true” feedback and modulation. Lastly, the signal chain features an analog-modeled, parametric equalizer to further shape your sound. The EQ provides access to crisp, clear high-end definition, creamy mid ranges and earth-shaking low-end frequencies. The Toxic Biohazard effect modules expands its palette of sound to include everything from dark, atmospheric textures to razor sharp leads, fit to slice easily through any mix. The Filter Maxx Claster's own analog-modeled, multimode filter is reminiscent of a certain silver box of old. Garnishing a warm, resonant Low-Pass mode, a smooth Band-Pass setting, and a creamy High-Pass mode, Toxic Biohazard gives a wealth of control over tone. The filter is further enhanced by modulation via a dedicated envelope generator and low frequency oscillator, as well as responding to velocity information and keyboard tracking. These features allow for extreme sound shaping, as well as subtle nuances attributed to dynamic playing. The Sequencer Powerful, yet simple, the sequencer offers a total of 64 steps, which can be divided into two independent, 32 step modules to allow double-polyphonic patterns. Using our own "Smart Sequencer" technology, when a chord is played, the module defines that chord, and tunes the pattern accordingly. The sequencer also allows for pure playback of the programmed sequence from single notes. Simply holding one chord can virtually create an arrangement for you!

  29. My Onyx 1200F just gave out, but I've been using a Zoom UAC-8 as my primary and just routing the extra Onyx inputs into it via ADAT. I like the Zoom and it works well for me but since I need extra inputs I went for the Presonus Quantum which blazes at RT latency around 3 msec at 64 samples and now I run the Zoom inputs into it via ADAT. But it costs a $ grand and uses Thunderbolt, so you need to be sure you have a good MOBO with a thunderbolt header and a matching AIC card made by the same manufacturer. Thanks to Jim Roseberry for his encouragement and tips on this issue.

  31. Having ThreadSchedulingModel set to 2 may "look" nicer on the CPU meter but I've found it actually makes audio performance worse. I have a quad-core (8 with hyper threading) laptop and the 0 setting works the best. Of course, there could be other issues that could be causing audio clicks/dropouts. For instance, on my computer (it's actually a 2016 MacBook Pro running Boot Camp ha ha) I have to disable the ACPI battery driver (that monitors the battery level), the Wi-fi adapter, and the onboard sound to get glitch-free audio performance. The battery driver is the worst culprit. You'll want to download the LatencyMon program (do a Google search) and run it to see if other drivers are interfering with your computer's audio performance.

  35. @synkrotron and @Starship Krupa - Good to read your lengthy and thoughtful exchange. I feel I know you both now -- at least more than I did. And intelligent points from both of you. My take: Despite Meng's vision and Noel's and the Bakers' dedication, a free product might not be sustainable in the long run, and if we are going to learn anything as complex as a full-featured multitrack digital recording, mixing and mastering program, we want it to be around and supported for a long time (plus we all got burned in November 2017). So it's not surprising that some of us want to understand what the prospects are, although I don't think it's quite fair to look for assurances. This is life, after all. Shit happens. For this reason I am happily using CbB and rooting for its continued success, but remaining poised to jump over to one of two other DAWs if anything goes wrong here in Cakeland. PS: Andy, you and I commented on each others music in the old Songs forum. Your stuff is foreign to an old rocker like me, but now that I've read all this from you I am going back and listening again. Diggin' it.

  37. I didn't reply because I just thought you were trolling. If you play guitar, then you should be able to tell that JF's playing was no where's near average by any comparison. I have no credentials like Kenny, but I did play in a band with Craig Goldy (Ronnie James Dio's godchild who played with Guifria and Dio), and I used to hang out with Walter Trout and Eddie Van Halen down in So. Cal. I can tell the difference between average and above. Most guitarists would give their left nut to play as well as JF did in those videos. But (I guess), that's just my opinion.

  38. First off I never bad rap musical artist's online or even in person especially if they are not there to defend themselves . It's just not a thing I'm into on any level .. To me some peoples online behavior is no different than The Classic "A - Hole guitarist " that shows up to hear another guitarists band live on stage and gives the player on stage the old thousand yard stare while sitting in the front row while he has his arms crossed in front of his chest doing his best interpretation of a Deadly Self Inflicted Cobra Snake Death Grip ...Poor fella he wasn't brought up right because his mama never sat him down and told him that the death hold is real bad for his blood circulation it's just like drinking poison and then expecting the guy on stage to Die ... You seem not to know a thing about me and I must confess it appears to be mutual on my end . So please allow me the opportunity to clue you in . I hate sharing parts of my resume online I honestly do hate to do so but in this case I will share a few of the Cliff Note moments What do you really know about Hendrix ? Have you ever been to his Greenwich Village apt, sat on his couch in his living room and talked w his roommate ? I have 3 times . Mike Q was Jimi's roommate since the 60's. Mike held on to Jimi's apt until a few years ago when he then was forced due to age and health problems to enter a assisted living place of residence. Siting there listening to Mike talk about how Jimi approached his playing and music while sitting on Jimi's couch was a real eye and ear opener For the record , to this day I have never read a word in print or saw a video that even covers what Jimi's creative process on the level of what Mike Q told me .. Have you ever played your guitar in a Band as a sideman with an Artist that has won 7 Grammy's ? I have and I have also played with a number of Grammy Nominated Artists for some of their select live show's Have you ever worked as a musician and played your guitar in and for a hit Broadway Show ? I have , I subbed in and for the Original Broadway Show The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas . Do you know what it is like to sit down with George Harrison and talk guitars ? I do and it was a life changing event for me .... Have you ever been gifted a guitar from the President of a well respected USA guitar company ? I have twice . Both Guild And Kramer have given me guitars as gifts. Most people from the Legacy Forum knew I have hung out and had conversations w Chet Atkins , Eric Clapton , Robbie Blunt , Ronny Wood , Steve Miller , Peter Frampton , Bobby Mayo , Steve Katz and a whole list of Rock Guitar players .... In Jazz it was even a lot better for me as a Player ..every body here knows I used to jam w Joe Pass and Emily Remler all the time I have studied with some of the worlds best .......good lord this ain't no humble brag any more ..shheshhhhhh... Man I can do this all day and all night but doing that means I have to drag myself down to some place I don't want to go to ... So you think my approach is childish ? ...Yeah Right ... Dude I can back my $hit up .....CAN YOU ? Kenny PS , I'm more of a HERE and Now type of Guitar Player and I am in the best shape of my guitar playing life .... Knock , knock on the plain maple top of my Gibson R 8 You might want to read this post fast because I may decide to pull this post down in an hour or two because do not like putting my old accomplishments out there ....any body that knows me here especially knows it just ain't my style

  40. One core can show higher use depending on the project since the multi-processing engine scheduler has work to do to farm out mixing tasks. The scheduler itself takes some time on one of the cores. Additionally there is GUI processing which is always on one thread. In most cases this is really not something you should care too much about. There is no such thing as perfectly balanced cores in multiprocessing unless you have artificial equal load tasks. There is one thing you can try assuming you have a quad processor or higher system. Go to Preferences | Configuration file and set ThreadSchedulingModel to 2. This uses an independent thread for scheduling tasks and may may result in a more balanced load with Quad processor systems or higher.

  46. Update whenever ready. In addition to backup, copying the current CbB program folder to a new name leaves the current version and the update available for use. Multiple versions may be stored online. For example, before updating to CbB 2019.01 I copied "C:\Programs Files\Cakewalk\Cakewalk Core" to "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Cakewalk Core-18-11" After updating, CbB 2019.01 was the default but I can launch the previous version of CbB by going into "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Cakewalk Core-18-11" and running Cakewalk.exe. This is how I managed Platinum and currently have several Platinum versions and every CbB version online. So what is the risk? If there is a problem with the shared utilities, all versions of SONAR and CbB are affected. This is where backup comes in handy. Even then backup is not the only recourse, it is possible to keep a copy of "C:\Programs Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities" online or retain copies of the installers.
