  1. If you're running Win10 Pro, you can absolutely disable all automatic updates including notifications. You can do so via the Group Policy Editor... or by adding two Registry Entries. Once implemented, you have to manually check, download/install all Win10 updates. We've done this scores of times.

  4. Not a bad idea for Hardware - though you could just as easily take a photo and put it in the project folder. I did something similar for Virtual Effects, by using the Fn+'stamp' (print) key on my keyboard. I used to do this with my projects when I had a string of effects with a particular sound I liked. Fn+Print > Ctrl+V in project folder. Gave me a screen grab of my project so that I could reproduce it at a later date (if anything went skewy).

  5. This topic has been battled over for years. My own experience has taught me that converting 48k to 44.1 is just not that beneficial! Besides that, 48k sample rates have revealed artifacts in some VST plugins both during playback and worse on bouncing the track to audio or conversion to 44.1. Personally, everything I do is 24 bit 44.1 k samplerate and have never had a problem or complaint. I work in a professional capacity doing everything from demos and commercials to full blown orchestra and choir projects. Country to fusion jazz. I have not had one complaint over all this time as to the quality of my work. I think I will stay at 24/44.1.

  6. With the old Cakewalk forum soon to be frozen, I’m adding links to the themes Gran Vista and Carbon here as well for easy access and future updates. Gran Vista Black & Blue This theme is called Gran Vista as some of the design elements are inspired by the graphical user interface once found in Windows Vista. Some would say that look is dated, but hey – so am I. There are four slightly different versions of this theme. Gran Vista Black & Blue 000 No gloss on the PC modules and some other design elements being non-glossy as well, such as the track icons. This is a theme for the serious production-centric user. Download from here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AmXDCxaGb7JEbGpfDomY4iiHPfY Gran Vista Black & Blue 030 Using 30% opacity on the gloss layer makes for a matte look-and-feel. This is a theme for the quite serious production-centric user who doesn’t want to have too little or too much of just about anything. Download from here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AmXDCxaGb7JEdCAuHOsrCAeaNP4 Gran Vista Black & Blue 060 Using 60% opacity on the gloss layer gives a subtle glare. This is a theme for the more casual production-centric user who, in the middle of a mixdown, still can appreciate some black plastic. Download from here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AmXDCxaGb7JEbfXIwcxnm-Y-WPA Gran Vista Black & Blue 100 Full 100% opacity on the gloss layer. This is actually the original theme I made, something for all of us who likes shiny, black plastic without reservations. Download from here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AmXDCxaGb7JEblAVDPH9Yip3v7A Carbon The Carbon theme is for the really serious production-centric purist. It has an even darker look and also a flat, non-glossy Control Bar. All other design elements are shared with Gran Vista Black & Blue 000. Download from here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AmXDCxaGb7JEcOCxvwxFeFGalk4 Matching CA-2A Skins Those using the Gran Vista or Carbon themes and also the Cakewalk CA-2A ProChannel module might find that the module’s brushed aluminum stands out like a sore thumb against the dark theme. As I lately needed to spend some quality time with my procrastinations, I’ve also created matching dark skins for each theme variant, plastic knobs and all. For consistency, I also did likewise with the non-ProChannel effect (not shown here). As CA-2A predates SONAR/CbB themes and hasn’t been made aware of them, replacing the default skin can’t be done through a theme update. It involves some manual tweaking, but it’s still very easy. Instructions on how to install and uninstall the graphical resources are supplied in a pdf that comes with the zip file. After downloading, please begin by reading those instructions before proceeding. The zip file containing all the matching CA-2A skins can be downloaded here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AmXDCxaGb7JEdYUVehZD7U-0cMY Background If the unlikely event that anyone would like to see the old thread describing the development of these themes, here’s the proper place to look. That thread also contains a few more preview images. Here's also a link to the Release History of these themes: https://1drv.ms/b/s!AmXDCxaGb7JEdu3To6t7ZeQmmAo Some final words: Please be patient when starting a download. Microsoft OneDrive is often painfully slow when responding to a download request.

  8. Hello All! I could have posted this to the FB group, but decided I like this format for this particular post. I think a lot of us that have been avid CW/SPLAT users over the years have noticed a marked increase in people who are new to Cakewalk, even new to recording, asking basic (noob) questions to the group. I'm sure it has to do with the awesomeness of the CW product, but let's be real, I'm sure being free doesn't hurt! Instead of seeing the longtime experts throw up their hands and say, "Dang dude (or chick), read the flippin' manual!" I see thoughtful, and thorough responses--regardless of how many times we old-timers may have seen the same questions over and over. I think over the years (and yes, they've been many) one of the most attractive parts of using CW is knowing the group of users behind it are always willing to help, knowledgeable about the product, and respectful (99% of the time :-/) and that helps me stick with it and not change DAWs. A BIG shout out to all long-time CW users that take their own time to help me, and everyone else that needs it! Cheers!

  9. To add some positivity to the negativity surrounding Windows update the first thing i do every morning when turning the computer on is hit the update button. I've done this since moving to 10 from 8.1, about 9 months after they released it. The only issue i've experienced is a BSOD from an outdated graphics drivers, the updating of which fixed the issue.

  10. If its a simple instrument track no. If its a split instrument track you can double click the input or output picker to open the synth. I suppose we could make double clicking the icon in the console also open the synth but then you will have to give up that being a shortcut to pick an icon.

  12. Always make sure to have an up-to-date backup image file of the OS (prior to applying any major updates). If you're under tight deadline or working on a major project, wait for a period of downtime to apply updates/etc. Most times, there won't be an issue... but there's no reason to take chances.

  13. I spent a lot of time yesterday demoing all the GA expansions has free 30 day demos for. The standout for me is Simon Stockhausen's COLLIDING WORLDS, which is only $20 during this sale. The 30 drum sets include typical world drums (Darbukas, Djembes, Angklungs, Temple Blocks, Singing Bowls, etc), but also drumsets composed of Chimes, Crotales, Container Drums, Barrel Drums, Doors. 1700 exotic samples. Using the construction kits in the MIDI programs is great, but it really took off for me when I started dragging in my own MIDI--all these unexpected results. If this intrigues you at all, you can download a free demo HERE Also, the Simon Phillips Studio Drum Set is a beast. 6GB. 27 kit pieces. Up to 16 velocity levels and 5 round robins. Extensive mixing options. It's the only drum set I've ever seen that has a "drum solo" patch. Just look at it: 7 Tom Toms, plus that monster Gong Drum on the right 6 cymbals 3 snares (6 alternates) and two bass drums active at one time 4 Octobans All this, plus tons of MIDI patterns for $40. You can also get a free download of this HERE

  14. You can't pick and choose from the Windows update screen anymore, but you can hide the ones you wish to avoid before checking. Once you check, you will open up the chute for anything that is not hidden from Windows to come rolling downhill, LOL! Use the little MS utility "wushowhide" to hide unwanted updates. I have saved a shortcut icon on my desktop for it. EZ Tutorial for use here: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/8280-hide-show-windows-updates-windows-10-a.html

  16. Dude, with all respect, you are just 100% wrong about this. I have been using Windows 10 Pro for 2.5 years, and Windows never updates until I ask it to check for updates. There is a policy setting in "Group Policy Editor" that lets you completely 100% disable automatic updating, as well as the notifications. I have never in 2.5 years had a Windows update that ran without me first clicking on "check for updates". Of course, I always take a full Macrium Reflect image before I push that button. Group Policy Editor > Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > All Settings > Configure Automatic Updates The text highlighted in blue in the image above explains how the policy works if it is set to "disabled". I am quoting it here for clarity because it seems that embedded screen captures on this forum have a max width of 400 pixels. Too small to read.

  17. Anyone here ever checked this site out? Sample rate conversion analysis Our favorite DAW looks pretty good. I dutifully ran all their tests and submitted the results from Mixcraft 7 some time ago but they never put them up. I will say this about sample rates and conversions and all that: just as a rule, I believe that the fewer operations performed on the material the better. This isn't yet one of those debates about "whether humans can hear the difference," but it is my belief that in the decades to come, research will reveal that there is a lot more information that we are able to take in via the sense of hearing than previously understood. Specifically that there are other kinds of perception than just frequency and amplitude. I am a huge skeptic when it comes to audiophool stuff, yet I have been moved to tears by hearing the difference between two audio sources that "experts" would say I shouldn't be able to tell the difference between. I also suspect that not everyone has the ability to hear at the same level. This would make evolutionary sense, as the ability to hear with greater acuity, especially directional and higher pitched sounds, and respond to them quickly, would be a trait that would make for a higher survival rate in environments with certain types of predators and prey. When I listen to MP3's at lower conversion rates, they sound like they "have the corners rounded off" "smeared transients," and my hearing, at age 57, after playing in punk bands.... How Sir George Martin could still make good mixing decisions well into his '80's, even though his hearing had to have been pretty shot....I can pick tiny little metallic "tings" out of a dense mix where a piece of drum hardware hit another piece, and go in and solo tracks until sure enough, there it is. I'm sure you all can, too. There's phase distortion, and a thing that I never hear discussed, group delay. There's more going on than we're measuring for today. More than we're able to measure for. It will be exciting to see, if we learn about it in my lifetime.

  22. It is not a theory. Under certain conditions a higher sample rate will result in lower latency. Whether those conditions are desirable and the resultant lower latency is beneficial are unknowns.

  23. That can work if you are extra vigilant. But I have one computer with Home and one with Pro, and I had a major feature update slip past me on Home once when I temporarily disabled the Metered network option in order to let my monthly security update run. You will have to disable that to get any downloads to run. If you do so, you will effectively open up the download chute to any updates that are lurking when you check for updates. It is too late to pick and choose 'em at that point. Boom! I prefer the confidence that Pro offers to not get blindsided like that!

  26. Free MIDI effects plugins from Plugin Guru Information and download links: PllugInGuru Show MIDI PlugInGuru ModMate Show MIDI Show MIDI is a MIDI Plug-In that shows you what you play on your keyboard controller with a visual display on your computer. This is helpful for people teaching classes, hosting webinars or livestreams or making videos where they need a keyboard to display what they are performing so others can watch along. I use this to make my YouTube videos because of the added flexibility of showing up to 4 MIDI CC#’s as well as Pitch Bend. Your DAW HAS to support MIDI Effects in order for this plug-in to be useful to you. Available for PC’s in 32-bit and 64-bit VST and VST3 formats. Available for Macintosh in Audio Unit, VST and VST3 format. This a FREE MIDI Plug-In that displays MIDI Activity with a keyboard and up to 5 faders that can be set to any of MIDI’s 127 MIDI CC#’s. The PlugIn is ReSizable and able to be set to display between 25 and 88 notes (5 different keyboard size options). This is FREE but you need to be a registered user here to add it to your account and download it. If you enjoy this plug-in and want to say thank you, then please buy a library of patches (or two or three). That is the nicest way to say thank you and you get new sounds for your favorite software plugins to be inspired by at the same time. So thank you in advance for your support. ModMate ModMate is a very powerful but simple plug-in that allows you to display on the Left set of faders, incoming MIDI activity from Pitch Bend and 4 assignable MIDI CC lanes. The 4 faders on the Right are 4 different assignable MIDI CC# sliders that can be assigned to DIFFERENT MIDI CC#’s if desired (or aftertouch). The 4 boxes in each input fader strip allow you to determine which of the 4 MIDI CC output lanes that input MIDI data will “Take over”. The cool thing with this is that you can assign CC1 (Mod Wheel) to control all 4 lanes by checking the boxes for all 4 lanes in the cc1 strip. We are starting to use more than 1 MIDI CC to control the sounds in our libraries. So these new Omnisphere 2.5 libraries (Airwave V3 and Beautifully Broken) can be used and all 4 MIDI CC’s can be changed using just the pitch bend up/down and Modulation wheel, for example. Also, since these settings can be saved in most DAW’s as a preset, you can make different MIDI CC templates for different sample libraries or for different ways you might use this plugin. So your Spitfire libraries can have one preset that assigns your hardware to control their libraries, while a different preset sets everything up for controlling your Omnisphere libraries. NOTE: This MIDI Effect PlugIn only will work in DAW’s that support MIDI effect PlugIns. Also, if you use this and then send a song file to someone else, they also MUST have ModMate installed in their system as well. This is doing real-time conversion of MIDI data. It is not writing this data into your sequence files, it is just re-channeling it in real-time to from one MIDI CC# to another. Available in PC (VST and VST3 32-bit and 64-bit formats) and Mac (Audio Unit, VST and VST3)

  31. The Plugin-Manager is meant to be completely replaced by the Plugin-Browser at some point, but there are still areas of functionality that are only covered by the Plugin-Manager. So until the Plugin-Browser gets all the functionality of the Plugin-Manager, the Plugin-Manager will stick around. The speed issues with the Plugin Manager were obviously easier/quicker to fix than Noel had original thought, so he put the fix in. BTW @Noel - l love the new colour changes to the Plugin Browser to distinguish between 32bit / VST2 / VST3. Very handy.

  40. Actually you didn't lose files at all, they were put into a different folder then you were use to. I disabled and don't use One Drive at all for backing up and mirroring/duplicating any files. But that doesn't stop Microsoft from mirroring your boot records in your Microsoft account, and that's a good thing especially from those who choose to do a fresh Windows install on a brand new fresh SSD or hard drive. But as part of the scheme of telemetry, It will save your desktop, systems config, and current hardware drivers ( whether you like it or not), you can only choose to restrict it from saving 3rd party software/apps or personal files whether you choose to use One Drive or not.. But IF you choose to use One Drive you can get everything back, very quickly any easily while you do nothing but sit back drinking coffee, beer, or power slamming shot of Tequila that can make you crazy while you sit back and watch Windows 10 and One Drive rebuild your system .. But for those who hate or fear cloud storage, you don't have to use any of it, but you will have to spend days if not weeks manually loading up all the stuff like drivers, programs/apps, and lots of systems configurating to get your computer back to what it was where you left off. Also One Drive isn't like or a replacement for Drop Box or Google storage. Goggle is nice, free, ample free storage but painfully SLOW! Drop Box isn't as slow and is cool for the first year but can get painfully expensive as time goes on. One Drive, like Apple's iCloud, most modern virus protection software suites, Google services (sans free Google Drive) and even Bandlab.com are VERY FAST cloud based services.

  41. What was said (I believe Steev) about OneDrive automatically backing up boot records is not true. The ONLY thing OneDrive backs up automatically is your Documents, Pictures and Desktop folders...and ONLY if you specify it to do so. You can enable the folder protection feature by going into OneDrive settings on Windows 10 and navigating to the Auto Save tab and hitting the update folders button under protect your important folders. It will NOT back up PST files or OneNote files that you may have in those locations. (Note OneDrive is not the same as OneSync. OneSync also does not backup things like boot records, etc. It only backs up things like settings and files you specify in a repository to allow multiple PCs you may own to "be in sync.")
