  2. First time posting in the new forum. Been in the other forum since 2003 though I never posted all that much. (Was much more active on the old newsgroups before that.) Been on every version of Cakewalk/Sonar since 1995 roughly. Still am, unbelievably. It's been a wild ride. This track was done entirely in CbB and in the video you'll see some screen captures of the track in action. Not posting this as an ad but if you do decide to get the frog guiros know that your $5 goes 100% to charity.

  3. Improvements in the current Version 4.2.1 Melodyne 4.2.1 brings the following improvements and numerous minor optimizations all of which make your use of Melodyne more enjoyable, reliable and swift. New functions and improvements Faster loading with ARA: In DAWs with ARA support, extensive projects now load considerably faster. Bug fixes Fixed: During ARA operation with Mixcraft and Cakewalk, blob monitoring and scrubbing were no longer available in Melodyne if you started playback in the DAW. Fixed: With Melodyne in Player Mode (i.e. without activating the program on the computer being used), the ARA plug-in sometimes crashed when you switched from Track Edit Mode to Clip Edit Mode. Fixed: If the detection was aborted after a transfer with the Melodyne plug-in and you subsequently tried to move audio material whilst holding down the ALT key, a crash was sometimes the result. Fixed: If an audio file was selected in the track pane of the stand-alone implementation of Melodyne studio, adjusting the fine tuning in the inspector sometimes led to a crash. https://services.celemony.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/LicenseApp.woa/wo/0LGb5C2wtMZc4ktQS5XLhM/0.0.21.3.11.0

  6. I can't log in there anymore... Forgot my password but the e-mail address I used to register there, one I had for over fifteen years, was compromised and so I can't reset... I suppose I could pester Ed or Bob but I feel like I'm being a bit of a PITA... Place I hang out the most nowadays is https://www.ambientonline.org/ but I can't see anyone here being interested in that, you mostly being rock/pop/country peeps.

  7. When making stems for music libraries it's very handy to use track folders, but they often want sub-catergories i.e. Guitars as the main stem but also Rhythm and Lead separately. Nested sub folders would make this very simple.

  8. I would like to record directly into a Matrix Cell sometimes. Now I record something in a track first, drag it to the browser and then drag it to a Cell. I would like to setup my patterns in Matrix first and then afterwards make the recording in the trackview. Happy holidays Cheers 😎

  18. They haven't fixed the issue introduced in the last update whereby the default algorithm isn't remembered. It's frustrating as they list Cakewalk as a supported DAW. 😡 Behaviour is ok in Studio One 4 but there's still an issue when I use it in Cakewalk. I emailed Ulf at Melodyne querying whether this issue is going to be addressed, but sadly he replied: "So far we cannot reproduce this issue. We need to be able to do this first before we can know if the issue is with us or Cakewalk." However, in October he told me: "Alright. We’re on it. But it may take a while." Can Noel perhaps chime in here and shed some light on this issue? It is an elusive glitch: I get it every single time, but I understand some CW users here don't experience it at all? 🤔

  19. Because some of us old-timers are creatures of habit. Plus there's not much need to "maintain" the utility, since its functionality hasn't changed and may not ever need to change.

  20. The time taken has nothing to do with the listbox population. Its reading the registry that is slow. Though you see it slow for 7 VSTi's behind the scenes it has to go through the entire inventory to find them. If you have a few hundred VST's a lot of registry reads. The DX effects enumeration is much more efficient than the registry enumeration hence its fast. The logic can of course be improved by using caching (like CbB does) and this was a todo item back in the day. This wouldn't improve the first load time of the plugin box but subsequent loads would be quick.

  25. I upgraded to 4.2.1 on my laptop yesterday. The 4.2.1 update consistently hangs Cakewalk when dragging an audio track on to a MIDI track, unless I've previously created a region FX and selected the default detection algorithm. On my main PC I'm still running 4.2.0. So far I've had to set the default once with 4.2.0, and it's remembered it ever since without issue. I'm running the Editor version, with a default of Polyphonic Sustain.

  32. SoundEmote has some very interesting sound mangling plugins - the audio equivalent of a touch of wasabi here, a little lighter fluid there, a scoop of ice cream and a couple of buttons of peyote . Interesting enough to convince your parents* that their concerns about your profession or hobby have been fully realized. *unless your parents were teenagers or in college during the 60's

  36. In his DAW comparison chart, one thing that jumps out is the zero score Cakewalk gets for stability. If the software you are using/reviewing fails to perform as described/intended, crashes, or otherwise leaves you tearing your hair, it is likely to color your impression of everything else. I have little experience with other DAW's, but it has been my impression over the years that many people have had the impression that Cakewalk/SONAR was exceptionally flaky compared to its competitors. My own impression was that it was too often pulled from the oven half baked in order to try to fix or add an "unfinished feature" that was being published primarily so that the developer could claim it was there. Of course I usually just told myself, it must be user error, resulting in more hair loss, or that buggy is an essential quality of truly state of the art complicated programs, and diligently set about crafting my own kludges or scouring the old forums for the genius of others. Then I would gleefully download a new version after learning that they had fixed a problem that they had never officially acknowledged existed. I am hopeful that the freedom from having to justify the cost of each upgrade, or monthly membership will take some of the pressure off the developers to turn out something for everyone (...a comedy tonight), and result in a shift to making sure that what they have devised is close to bullet-proof. The vast majority of the users of DAW's (as opposed to those who visit DAW self-help forums) are musicians (or want to be) looking for a tool that just works.

  37. This statement summarizes the crux of many issues. "Unfinished features" comprise a much bigger list, and historically the old forum (especially under Gibson) became inundated with work arounds (e.g., "You can achieve that via this convoluted method, so it is already there!") rather than acknowledgement (e.g., "Oh, good point, we can definitely do that better!") and following through on it. This constantly came across as "I have given you a work around, so will forget you ever said anything." That mindset and its implied statement do not coincide with sales, usage, or promotion of a product; and Gibson epitomized this. The former "Feature Request" forum was filled with a plethora of good and detailed ideas, but was locked, and subsequently slid out of public view. I used to review them off and on and think of "what could have been." It amounted to a lot of heart-felt time and effort by users wasted. The "200+ hours" from the article in the OP strikes home for me as well. Granted, he tried to delve into everything he could, but new users are often beset with a similar time investment. Practical guides for new users is important, especially where common tasks are readily exposed with underlying functionality polished. [Side comment, potentially related] One thing I find concerning is that this new forum seems to be populated predominantly with members from the old. I *assume* this is open to everyone (perhaps in error), so find it odd that more new members are not present.

  38. As Bill indicated one reason is to allow an easy full reinstall of Windows even if hardware changes. I think using a MS account creates a "digital license" that allows easier authentication in case of disaster recovery.

  39. As far as being able to do a clean install of WIN 10 after getting the free upgrade from WIN 7, I found it is very helpful to sign into (or create) a Microsoft account and activate/authorize the computer to link it with the "digital license" that is associated with your MOBO. Then Microsoft stores your digital license for you and you can retrieve it again on the same computer when you do a clean install. I have about 6 WIN 10 computers that were upgraded from WIN 7, and some will allow a fresh install authorization using the old WIN 7 product key, but others have not been so easy. But what is easy is signing all your WIN 10 computers into the same Microsoft account and "activating" while signed in. To do this, (before you do your wipe/clean install) go to Settings>Update and Security>Activation: Add Microsoft Account. Create or sign into your existing account and the account automatically stores the digital license associated with ("linked to") each computer. When you've done your clean install, just go through the same procedure and your WIN 10 installation will be instantly authorized/activated. Easy to manage and never worry about losing a product key. Good luck. Bill

  40. I've not seen any decrease in performance with Win 10 only improvements. That said my DAW PC which was originally upgraded from Win7 developed some bizarre issues and couldn't be updated any more. After MS support couldn't figure it out I did a clean install of Win 10 and its fine now. Unfortunate but sometimes Windows will get corrupt. Your issue with playback not starting properly looks like its hardware related however. Make sure your drivers are all up to date. You can also try a different audio device (like the onboard audio) to see if its related to the current driver.

  41. Windows 10 should at the very least give you as good of performance as Win 7. Most everybody reports better performance. However, some of the same things apply to a Windows 10 system as they did to a Windows 7 system. Nothing is as important as making sure you are using the right audio interface driver for best performance. This may mean using WDM instead of ASIO. If ASIO is used, and most recommend it, find the sweet spot for low latency vs. stability. There should be no delay in starting playback. It can be due to buffers being too low or too high. Be sure to set you computer to best performance not balanced as the default. Be sure to disable startup programs you don't need running in the background. Be sure to get the latest Windows 10 updates. As others have already said do not run Cakewalk in game mode. If you can use more than one hard drive. The C drive should be reserved for applications and VSTs. A second drive should be used for sample libraries and a third for projects. The more the better. Try to avoid programs that were meant for Windows 7 Make sure a program is Windows 10 compatible. Make sure you have full permissions throughout you system and drives. Remove Nvidia audio drivers from your system. Try to avoid your computer "calling home" via the internet when running Cakewalk. Some disable wifi too. Don't "optimize" Windows 10 as if it were Windows 7. As I think of more things I will add them. I hope this is helpful.

  42. Hi, To add to what Craig suggested, in addition to turning off (again) the HD Audio Driver, I also make sure Game Mode stays off (Windows update has turned it back on) and that my graphics drivers are up to date.
    1 point
  43. Windows does, uh, "helpful" things like re-enable your HD Audio driver which may not cause problems, but at least in my case, disabling it make a HUGE improvement and others have reported the same difference. (IIRC this is the driver that makes sure that audio is NEVER prioritized over frame rate in games.) Windows also seems to re-enable it after updates to be "helpful", so after an update, check to make sure it's disabled. It took me a while to optimize everything for the brave new world of Windows 10, but ultimately, it's been worth it. Note that it's very important to make sure ANYTHING your system has that uses a driver has the latest driver. The Intel Driver & Support Assistant has been super-helpful in keeping my computers up to date. You'll get used to it :)
